Interesting thread! I read and prefer notation to Tab for all the reasons in earlier posts. I also think I've got a reasonable ear when it comes to transcribing bass lines. BUT I have to admit that, when I need to learn a song quickly for my covers band, one of the first things I do is google for the Tab. I feel guilty admitting it, and I guess its making me lazy too! I think OTPJ has a serious point in that Tab has created a generation who can't read - reading notation gives so much more information than Tab ever can. You could never rely on Tab for a song you don't already know, whereas I could get by sight reading notation (albeit badly!) on an unfamiliar song.
So were the grosvenor willing to take booking with no deposit? How many of those showing interest actually attended?
BB will confirm, but I think several dropped out in the last day or two. I would definitely attend!

I got this is in a trade with King Tut just before Christmas. Pics on Colin's original sale thread here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=70069&hl= As you can see - classic sunburst/tort/maple. I've also got a black pickguard which I'll include in the sale (a genuine US Fender replacement part). Its in very good condition with just the one small ding as per Colin's photos (its so small that I had forgotten about it until I revisited his thread for the pics!) This is the US Standard Jazz with S1 switch - which is actaully a nice addition to the usual Jazz sounds. The neck on this is fantastic, plus classic Jazz sounds and looks. I will include a battered, but usable, Fender hard case. I'm asking £550 plus postage. I'm really looking for a sale to raise cash for another project, put if you have any tempting trades, its always worth asking!

Excellent afternoon. Thanks to Born 2B Mild and Yorks5stringer for getting this off the ground. Great venue and some very very nice basses (although my head is still hurting from trying to play Jim's 9 string monster!).
Anyone have any idea what these are worth? A friend is wanting to sell one that he's had for quite a few years. All I know is that it's a German one with a glued neck and apparently he's thinking in the 4 figure range? Cheers.
It really depends on what model it is. The through neck models are worth more than the bolt on models, but I don't think any of the current range has a glued neck (in fact, I'm not aware of any old models with a glued neck either). To be honest, I think he'd be very lucky to get four figures for any second hand Streamer in the current market. If its a bolt on, I'm afraid 4 figures is way above estimate.

Very nice collection. Particularly jealous of the '64 P. I'll get one some day!
Well I never !!! Think I better stick to my Laklands !! lol Did feel nice tho, must be the Jazz neck :-) On offer at £399 Is that about right or pricey for a Mex ??
Bit on the high side IMO.

Its one of the MIM Precision specials, rather than one of the urge models. Very nice basses.

I'll also bring the Stingray, Ric, and Jazz, and the Markbass combo.
Hi, Im looking for pickups to give me a hi-fi tone in my precision bass, im thinking on EMG any suggestions??? thanks
I've got EMGs in my P bass. They're not as hi-fi sounding as you might think. More of a traditional P bass tone, but with a tighter low end and a bit more clout. Personally, I think they're great, but not as hi-fi as some of the active J types.

Wizard thumper or SD SPB-3 Quarter Pounder
simon1964 replied to neptunehealer's topic in Bass Guitars
I generally like SD pickups...but not the QP. To me it just didn't sound like a Pbass - more like a Pbass through the old Trace pre-shape - all nasty highs and thumpy lows (that get you turned down or over compressed...). I'd always go for a more traditional Pbass sound with plenty of "notice me" mid range. My fav is the old DiMarzio model P. Like a good Pbass sound, but just a little bit more.
+1 to all of that. I had a P with Quarterpounders in, and if and if anything it had less presence in the mix due to the loss of mids. -
very nice - you can't beat sunburst and tort on a Precision
-
I've got one of the MIJ 70s reissue Ps. Brilliant bass, and personally I think you'd struggle to get a better Precision within your budget.
-
I've got an MIA Jazz and a 2006 Stingray. Both excellent. Musicman20 is dead right about the Jazz tone. The Jazz is my only passive bass, but is as versatile as any of the basses I own - anthing from growly aggressive rcok to subtle blues and jazz tones. Not sure I agree with his take on the ray, though. I wouldn't describe the tone as middy - in fact, mine has a slightly scooped tone. Great for slap, funk, or sounding like early Flea! Boost the low mids and you're back to a rock tone. Definately a great sound, and I love mine. But it is more of a marmite tone IMO and not as versatile as a Jazz.
-
Good tips above. For me, another important factor is watching the drummer, not just listening.
I remember a sales guy tried to big up the S1 thing with the argument of 'you can make the Jazz bass sound almost like a Precision'.
TBF that's how a lot of the Fender blurb marketed it. It doesn't make a Jazz sound like a Precision, but it gets it a bit closer, and certainly gives a fatter sound. Personally, I like the added versatility.
-
My Jazz is one of the S1 models - the second one I've had. The S1 switch works well on a Jazz IMO. As you say, it doesn't add much on the Precision, but on a Jazz it gives the option of a thicker thumpier sound (great rock tone with a pick). And you've still got the classic J tones.

Ric-O-Sound kit (complete - mint)
What does it do?
I think they simply split a mono signal into a stereo one, replicating the two outputs on the Ric 4003. I could be wrong though! -
My bass (Fender Aerodyne) is a passive, so i always (on my Ashdown combo/both high and low too) just plug it into the Low input, is this the right thing to do? I always thought that the High was for Active Basses, and the Low was for Passive... Am i wrong?
High means "high gain", so would normally be used with a lower output bass (typically passive). In reality, assuming your bass has an input gain knob, you can generally just adjust the gain to an appropriate level whichever input you use.
