New bass that sounds like an old '79 Precision Special?
simon1964 replied to Jamesemt's topic in Bass Guitars
Oldest rule in the book is that basses that sound crap soloed often sound great in the mix.
+1. And that applies to Precisions more than any other bass IMO. -
I'd have a look at Delano: http://www.delano.de/ I've got the JMCV in the neck position on my Shuker (with a MM in the bridge). These are the large pole piece models and have a really nice growl, good output, and a great Jazz tone. I think they're fitted to a lot of the Sandberg Jazzes, and Jon Shuker also uses them a lot, which is a good recommendation in itself!
it's a shame that you don't get on with it and feel intimidated by the options...... you shouldn't be. I let myself get scared by the EQ options on an Eden WT amp once. I didn’t realise that “flat” can be the best way.
Very wise words! I've found the same with my Shuker. Set everything flat (which is a great sound in itself) then just tweak a bit from there. I love the sunburst on this - fantastic looking bass. Good luck with the sale!

WITHDRAWN: Trade: Fender Fretless Maple Precision

I've owned the CD and MP3 versions. Personally I find the MP3 version more versatile, if only because you can downlaod stuff straight from your PC. No messing around burning CDs etc. But both are excellent bits of kit.

mr brightside (killers) - notated on dave marks site
simon1964 replied to Geek99's topic in General Discussion
We play it in Db in my covers band. I use standard tuning (there are no open strings) but the guitarist tunes down a semitone -
+1 for the Korg DT10 - excellent bit of kit. The one I wouldn't recommend is the Behringer rack tuner. Slow and doesn't track well
How's the tuner in the B2.1U? I assume it has one? Would it be a match for my DT-10? Is there a compressor in the B2.1U? Is it any good? Thanks, Mark
I used to own the B2.1U. The Tuner is very good. To my ears, just as accurate as the Korg. The compressor is less good. I tended to run mine with a seperate compressor (in my case the BBE opto-stomp). Otherwise, the Zoom is very good, and easily the best value for money out there IMO. Its also very solidly built - I regulalrly used mine live without any trouble.
That's the only Precision I ever heard that sounds like that. I always thought it sounded more like a Rickenbacker, ala Chris Squire. Anyway, it's an awesome, rough sound.
+1. I can actually get much closer to that gritty early Stranglers tone with my Ric than I can with the Precision

Has to be one of the best cover versions ever. JJ's bass tone is simply amazing.

Badass bridges - are they worth the money?
simon1964 replied to Dom in Dorset's topic in Build Diaries
They're nice bridges, and in my opinion, do give a bit more punch and sustain to the tone. But personally, I would recommend the Gotoh 201. Does the job just as well, at half the price. They also look more like a traditional Fender bridge, albeit a lot "chunkier". -
Looks awesome, I need to try one of these out. Aren't they 30" ?
Pretty sure the one I tried was 34"

Very nice. The Jazz looks great. I used to have an MIA Jazz with an Audere - excellent pre-amp, versatile, but keeps the fundamental Jazz tone.

Raw wood to bass in five days. Yes, I did carve the neck a little too thin..and there is one small dent in the fingerboard (missed the fret..getting tired!) but its a good bass and a tribute to Jon's patience and knowledge.
Blimey - that looks fantastic!
Hi yes indeed, but he has only listed a few types of pick up. I just need some basic info on what they are like or whether, because of the 'bespokeness' of such a hand made bass, would it better to spend some extra cash for something better/ different? Im sure Jon is extremley knowledgable is this area, but i do like to research projects before i commit cash to them cheers Matt
Don't worry about what Jon has listed on his web site. Within reason he can source pretty much anything, so if you want a particular type of pickup in your build he's likely to accomodate that (subject to cost of course!). I know Luke specified Seymour Duncan's, but with a modded pre-amp on his build. One of the real benefits of this course (or having Jon build a bass for you!) is that you can pick his brains on what will work for you.

Really sorry I couldn't make this in the end. Looks like a great day!
I much prefer Victor's groove playing that his slap playing, it's a shame that a lot of people focus on how fast he can slap rather than his fingerstyle.
Agreed - although ironically I think the same is true of Flea. I much prefer his more melodic playing to his slap playing. Soul to Squeeze and Scar Tissue, for example, are fantastic melodic bass lines, with a really great groove (IMO!).

That ACG is stunning! What are the top and fingerboard woods?
-
I reckon that was genuine. They certainly had strat knobs in the 80s. I used to own a black one with exactly those style knobs.
All the 5 string sets are EB's as are the Flat wounds (yes they do have some in stock, but only Med gauge and only 4 string sets).
They sold me some Fender flats, heavy gauge, a couple of weeks back as that was all they could find in stock FWIW they were much better strings than I'd expected. I'll make sure I visit on a Saturday morning from now on!

I would have a serious look at Delano pickups and EQ. I've got both on my Shuker and love the sound.
