For £150 this looks like a cracking buy. Nothing to do with me, by the way! Good example of the value you'll get buying used though. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=58325

+1 to the Squier and Vintage suggestions. Both safer bets than the two you've suggested. Within your budget you can get some decent stuff - especially if you buy used on here. Look out for some of the cheaper Yamaha and Ibanez models. Consistently good quality.
With this is mind, I obviously have to lower the price but the bass has to go. If anyone is interested, then I will knock £1000.00 off the original asking price and take £1500.00 for it. It is still a 1964 pre-CBS bass after all and it does sound amazing. Regards, Matthew
Argh! That price is very tempting for a Fender born the same year as me! Its certainly got more orginal parts than I have too

I like all of mine for different reasons. The Shuker is brilliantly made, sounds fanstastic and has an amazing action. The best all rounder. The Precision just seems to fit like a glove. Limited range of tones, but classic look. The Thumb is best for pure tone, but is bloody heavy, so doesn't get to many gigs! The Stingray is the main gigging bass, mainly because of the versatility and overall feel. And the Rick looks coolest!

Best preamp Pedal??? Your experiences...

Another +1 for the Microbass II. Really versatile, especially if you switch between two basses. I'd agree with the comments on the Behringer - surprisingly good for the money. -

P bass PUPs. Are they in the correct configuration?
simon1964 replied to Marky L's topic in Bass Guitars
It's hard to say Leo made a mistake but your thinking in terms of tonal balance is sound. Yamaha made a P-bass type in the 70s with this feature (as well as a straight-through neck) and I rated it better than your average Precision.
Sandberg's Ps all have the pickup the "wrong" way round - ie opposite to the Fender configuration. It certainly seems logical - whether it actually makes any difference may be another matter. -
Any good bass shops between Sheffield and Durham?
I'm going up to Durham tomorrow and I was wondering if there were any decent bass/guitar shops en route that were worth checking out. Cheers, Joe
Would that take you past Doncaster? If so, visit Electro Music. -
Heya! I'm starting a job in Birmingham on Wednesday, so I'll be commuting from Oxford each day . I thought I could make the most of things by maybe dropping into a decent music store at some point. So! Anything around? Ta Ash
PMT is easily the best in Brum. They're a bit outside the City Centre but have a good range of stock and are very friendly and helpful. Its worth a visit just to try out the range of Sandbergs, but they also stock Fender, Musicman, Ibanez, Yamaha, etc. They have a good range of Ashdown and Trace amps as well. Fairdeal Music, just off the inner ring road are OK. Not quite the range of stock that PMT have, but they are pretty helpful. The old Sound Control (which I think is now Reverb) was poor the last time I went there. The service used to be OK, but the bass stock was pretty poor the last time I went. They have some nice Fender guitars, including some very tasty custom shop stuff, but the bass stock is pretty uninspiring. City Music just around the corner from Sound Control / Reverb have some surprisingly nice stuff there, including Lakland and Sandberg. Edit - I'd mixed up Fairdeal and City Music

Bass pics you have to keep coming back to
simon1964 replied to GreeneKing's topic in General Discussion
I think there has to be a rule that you can't post your own bass - other wise I'd post the one in my avatar And GreeneKing, you're a braver man than me putting a mug on that particular coffee table!! -
Cheers Simon, I guess a lot of the 'replacements' are designed to be just that, soundwise.. Just looking for something a bit different tonally. Wondering what a Delano sounds like with a Aguilar or something.. I'll have to speak to Mr RIM..
The Delano hybrid MM in my Shuker sounds great. It will do MM sounds, but is much more versatile than a standard MM pickup. Its also coil tapable and provides excellent Jazz sounds. On mine the single coil setting is passive which gives some real contrast. Might be worth a look if you're looking to move away from the Stingray tone?

Just bought a 90s Warwick Fortress One for £250

Genuine bargain! And the Fortress is the nicest shape Warwick have done IMO. Wish I'd seen it before you -
Some folks have used the Nordy p'up with An East pre-amp to great effect I believe. Never heard it myself...
I've got the East 3 band pre-amp to my 'ray. The idea is that it replicates a 2 band ray with the mids set flat, but it adds the option of a sweepable mid boost and cut. It does, more or less, do that. It certainly still sounds like a 'ray, although to my ears you need to boost the treble s bit to get a true Stingray sound. The sound is perhaps marginally more "refined" than a two band ray, but still with the Stingray character. The sweepable mid boost and cut is a fantastic feature - it really adds some versatility to the core Stingray sound, but always sounding like a 'ray. I don't think John Easts website has details as yet, but you can find the specs here: http://www.bestbassgear.com/east-musicman-preamp.htm ..although I bought mine from John East direct. FWIW I played a Stingray at the Nottingham bass bash which had a Nordstrand and the John East two band EQ (sorry, can't remember who's). We A/B it against my ray (which then had a standard MM 2 band circuit) and you would have been pushed to tell the differnce.
All the ranges have good and bad due to the usual mass production issues. The usual try before you buy mantra applies. I have the Am.Std. Jazz which is a lovely bass, but I also want a Classic Vibe jazz. They are almost as good and in some cases, better than the American. Rich.
Agree 100% with that. I used to have a MIA Jazz which was great. I've currently got a Classic vibe Jazz (albeit with a fretless precision neck on it) and it is incredibly good for the money. On the other hand I've played some pretty ropey Fenders from right across the range. The general view seems to be that the Japanese Fenders are consistantly good, but as OTPJ says, you have to try before you buy. IMO you simply can't say that one Fender range is better than another.
Go to the Jazz page and click 'Gallery' - you will find some more traditional Jazz type basses about half way down (eg, white with maple/blocks)
Beat me to it!!
Does he...? looked at his web site and the style of some things is an aquired taste...not got a problem with that in itself but I haven't seen a bog standard clone of a jazz bass. I might have a look at his work if he did I looked under the header Jazz as that is where I would expect to find his clones.. so I summise clone in looks or sound..?? the latter I assume. Have to see one up close but his entry prices appear attractive
If you look in the J Bass Gallery under "classic" he does make what I would call top end, traditional Jazzes, with the Fender style scratchplate, two single coils, 70s style block inlays (Go to the J Bass gallery and scroll two thirds of the way down). Its wrong of me to call them bog standard though, as they are incredibly good. Certainly nicer than my old MIA Jazz. What I was really getting at was that Jon does make more traditional Fender shaped basses (including the JJ Burnell of course) as well as some of the more exotic shapes. And you're right about his entry prices - pretty competitive compared to most custom luthiers. Mine cost me not much more than the list price of an MIA Fender, and way below what you would pay for a custom shop Fender. He often has a Jazz clone as one of his stock models - you can pick up real bargains on those.
-
I saw that when I was at Jon's a few weeks back. The finish is simply stunning in the flesh. Personally, I'm not over keen on the pointy top horn, but it is nice to see something a bit different to your bog standard Jazz clones (which Jon also does incredibly well!!)
-
Another vote for the Zoom for a cheap, but good, multi fx. If you're looking for a good overdrive/distortion, I'd recommend trying the Ashdown James Lomenzo. Fantastic pedal for the money, and very versatile.

And here's mine - identical but with a Ric bridge. I think Hipshot had to change to a slightly different footprint so the two are not identical. Personally I've been happy with the stock Ric bridge - bit more chunky and gtraditional looking, although if you're fussy about adjustment, the Hipshot is worth a look.
