Blimey - not quite sure how that all kicked off Anyway, Tributes go for around £600 to £700 new. I think this is a geniune bargain. If you don't go for it, could you let me know where it is, as I would be interested in it myself!

I had the same problem with my MIA Jazz. I sold it in the end to do my back a favour! The Ibanez SR series is very light, but the lightest bass I own is a little Hohner Steinberger copy. I hardly know its there. The only problem is our guitarist taking the p*ss about how 80s it looks!

Have you emailed Ashdown? My experience is that they are just about the most helpful manufacturer out there.
Hello, just wondering have I completely mispriced this, has the shop I consulted about value just got it completely wrong? I'd appreciate any views, particularly from anyone who might want it, but at a lower price. I'm perfectly open to the idea that I've just got it wrong. There's been a deathly silence on this thread, which suggests I might. Thanks, Matthew
to be honest, I don't think the painted scrathchplate and truss rod cover are doing it any favours. If people buy a Ric, its a large part down to the classic look. Can you strip the paint from the guard and TRC without damaging them? In original condition, I think you'll sell it much quicker - I might even be tempted myself!
good call, fortresses are luverly!
And that one is a great price. As rjb has said the Ibanez SR500 is amazing value for money. Very hard spec to beat at the price. It really depends on your budget - I would look at Yamaha, Ibanez, and there are some amazing deals on used Warwicks at the moment. You can pick a used Corvette $$ up for £450 - they're excellent basses selling at over £1000 new in some shops.
Hi All, I bought this modified beauty off of our very own Clarky a while ago and thought I'd share some pictures of it. The sound and playability of it is just ridiculous. I bought it as a 'banger' bass for practicing, etc and it's turned out to be one of my favourites It has been modified with a Badass 2 bridge, a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder pickup and the icing on the cake that are the T.I. flatwound strings. I've never encountered the T.I. flats before and stone me are they good and nice to play! It nails the sound exactly from The Clash's London Calling song IMO. The bass itself is very nice to play as the action is just right. It has plenty of chips and bangs on the body but the neck is totally perfect and unmarked. Anyway enough bleating from me, here it is - The mid '90's Crafted In Japan Fender Precision bass A.K.A. Sid: Cheers, Jon. P.S. Gotta love those Fender T.V. logo's haven't you!
Lovely bass - I've got an identical CIJ 70s reissue, but have added EMGs to mine. They really are great quality - as nice as any Fender I've played.
Holy cow this amp is great ...... I've only had it an hour but this looks like the perfect combination of deep and punchy sound and light weight for me. Haven't worked out the two filters yet because they seem to interplay enormously with the EQ - kick up the lower mids a bit and it makes whatever they're doing sound very different - but I look forward to experimenting. The thing sounds great with everything neutral though, and responds very powerfully to the EQ on my bass, so I can still concentrate on playing rather than tweaking. Happy days!
I tend to use the EQ flat and only use the two filters on mine. In fact, I tend to tweak the VLE filter if I want to roll off some high end, and that's about it. Very nice combo, and amazingly light.
Hey all I am slowly building my gear back up after having to shed it over recent years and am wanting to get back into playing on a serious level, and got to wondering what eactly do I need long term, I may well not be in a position to spend the cash for a good while once I am sorted so really need to get it right first time. So my question is, who amongst us carries backup amps for gigs and if so what is your main amp and what is your backup? My current rig is a GK 1001 head and two GK 2X10 RBH cabs, no back up Cheers.
I carry a decent DI just in case anything happens to the amp. Only happened to me once, but I'm glad I had it with me!

Have a look at the Ashdown James Lomenzo hyperdrive. Very versatile, great sounds, and cheap!
make your mind up simon! I've played this and it's a gorgeous bass!
LOL! It is very nice to play, with possibly the nicest neck I've encountered, but I find it gets a bit lost in the mix with the band (unlike a certain $$ I sold to fund the purchase ) On balance, following tips from several people on here, I'm going to fit the East pre-amp, and possibly a Nordstrand. Sacrilege to die-hard Stingray fans, but I'm hoping that will give me a fatter, more rounded tone. So, all PMs replied to - thanks for the interest, but now withdrawn (until the next time I change my mind!!)
yeah i like the look of the bridge and pickups on the ATK but is one pickup enough? i know its triple coil and stuff but (im not bothered about it being heavy) would there be a better make than ibanez perhaps for a reliable indie style bass?
The ATK is actually very versatile. I used to have the 5 string, and it would do good imitations of a Stingray or Precision. For the budget you've quoted, you should be able to pick up a nice Mexican or Japanese Precision - They should fit the genre I would have thought. The best advice is to try a few basses, see which feel comfortable and sound good to you.
Indie Rock style mostly so its more for look and style but i need a good sound and i suppose up to sort of £440 - £500 quid
The Artcore is short scale. They look nice, but to be honest, the one I played didn't sound great. The ATK, on the other hand, is a fantastic bass. They're heavy though!
I actually disagree with the Status comment as the early models can technically now be classed as vintage instruments! And they are timeless - my old Series 2000 #27 looks just as good today as it did back when I was a gangly yoof! Anyway, I'm an old git! Other classic non-US fully giggable basses could (IMHO) be; Washburn etc etc etc
Washburn are an Amercian company. They've actually been around longer than Fender etc, orignally making acoustics, albeit that the bulk of their production is outside the US now (which is probably true for Fender too!). Burns has to be the British classic
I quite fancy one of these: http://www.guitar.co.uk/guitars/bass/1745-...ard_bass_guitar Does anyone have an opinion as to whether they are any good?
I played one at Sound Control in Birmingham. They're quite nice. The neck that felt very much like a Precision to me. They're adequate tone wise. The sound is very much a passive old school sound, and not very versatile, but I guess you would expect that! And they look even cooler in the flesh!

This is the second Stingray I've owned. Fantastic to play, brilliant neck, and seems to fit like a glove. But I just don't think the Stingray sound is for me! Its in good nick - the neck was grubby when I bought it, but has cleaned up nicely. 2 Band EQ, four string. I also have a John East 3 band Stingray EQ which I've never fitted, but which I could include in the right deal. I'm in no hurry to get rid of it, and I'm not 100% sure on trades. Probably something Warwick, Sandberg or possibly a nice Jazz. Try me! I can send more pics if anyone's interested.

Very nice! Love the red Lakland, and you can't beat the look of a natural ray (although see my contribution to your other thread - like you, I struggle with the sound!). How does the Lakland compare soundwise to a normal Precision?

Musicman Stingray - Such a love/hate relationship
That makes interesting reading. It'll be good to see what you think. Peter
I'll report back once its fitted! Had an email exchange with John, and he tells me that it is designed to sound like a traditional 2 band Stingray with the mids set flat. But the mid control should allow me to dial in some low mids to give it a bit more clout but hopefullyretaining the overall Stingray tone. Hope so! -

Musicman Stingray - Such a love/hate relationship
simon1964 replied to Linus27's topic in Bass Guitars
what difference did you find between the 2EQ and 3EQ?
I think there is a difference in the way the EQ works. Others will correct me if I'm worng, but I think the 2EQ is boost only, whereas the three band is normal boost and cut on all three bands. Having played both, there is, IMO, a subtle but noticeable difference in the sound, although both still sound like Stingrays (if that makes sense!). -

Interesting thread! I'm on my second Stingray, and like the OP I love the feel and playability, but struggle to get a really good sound in the mix. Don't get me wrong - its not a bad sound, but it just doesn't have the clout of my Shuker or Thumb (or the $$ I used to own, come to that). I've just bought one of the Musicman three band EQs which John East has designed. The bass and treble controls are meant to replicate a 2 band Stingray when the mids are flat, but with the ability to dial in some mids with a mid and mid sweep control. I've not got it yet, but I'm hoping it will give a bit more clout by dialling in some low mids. I'll post a review once its fitted. If not, maybe I'll be trading it for a $$ - like the one I sold to buy the 'ray! -
