Just sold my Precision to Mark. Very easy transaction, great communication, and a pleasure to deal with. Simon
Starting to consider an additional bass... Currently have a MIA Fender Jazz Bass Deluxe (4 strings). What is out there that you can recommend that is passive or is switchable between passive and active, has 24 frets (minimum 22), and is high quality such as Fender, Music Man, Warwick and above? Might be 4 or 5 strings, haven't decided yet... I play with both fingers and pick, but mostly with pick and with lots of chords played on the D and G strings. A LOT, really! With the pick. Almost like a second guitar sometimes, with fuzz, etc, but frequencies have to be separated from the other distorted (real) guitar, so it can't get too trebly and it has to keep filling the low end. Not much slapping at all. Often tuned down a semitone on all strings or in drop-D. My type of sound is probably around Fender passive basses and Music Man. I like Warwick basses a lot sometimes when I hear others playing them but personally haven't played one myself that really impressed me... haven't done it in years either so I might change my mind if I do now... And the build is fantastic! Music Man Sterling seems interesting, so do many Warwick basses, but are they switchable to passive? What can you suggest? Thanks
Warwick Corvette $$ is certainly switchable between passive and active, and would be well worth checking out.
Have you never heard of WDmusic then? They are in England...!
I have used WD but they can also work out quite a bit more expensive - admittedly less so given the weakness of sterling against the dollar.
Try dasbootman on Ebay - he's in the US but I can vouch for the quality of his pickguards so the postage wait is well worth it.
+1. I've bought several pickguards from him, including a Stingray, and they've all fitted perfectly. Pretty quick delivery too.
PMT in Birmingham.
Me too. Best music shop in the Midlands bar none. Also Drum and Guitar Centre in Nottingham, and Music Scene in Mansfield Music Scene is a geat small little shop if you're ever in North Notts. Two of the staff are keen bass players themselves, and they usually have one or two goodies there along with the usual stuff. They had a nice Stingray and Wariwck Corvette last time I was there, and often have some interesting vintage stuff as well. the old Sound Control shop in Derby is pretty good too - can't remember what its called now though. And on here obviously!
Can the venue do it for you? They're generally good at doing stuff to price or numbers
I thought they did something last time - and will be easiest and cheapest bet?
I should get comission.....
Me too! The Ibanez SR500 range is an astonishing spec for the money, and they sound fantastic. You do need to like a skinny neck though. The Ibanez ATK is also great value if you like a chunkier neck, and a Stingray vibe.
Is there a Jack Bruce sig?
Warwick do two in fact. One based on a Thumb, and another based on an SG shape with a bubinga top here: http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/options.php?id=72505 -
On a very enjoyable encounter with Norman Watt - Roy a few years back he told me that a Jazz signature for him was being considered, along with chunk missing where his thumb sits. To be honest in the long beer fuelled conversation I and a few others had with him about 4 minutes was spent talking about his bass gear. He was far to funny, interesting and charming to talk about thyat drivel.
I was going to suggest Norman Watt-Roy. And a Paul Simonon 70s Precision would be nice -
I don't know how easy they'd be to find Chris but Warwick did an MEC lipstick pup for their Fortress Flashback bass. It might be worth a punt on the Warwick forum, if you can't be ars*d to register I can stick a thread up for you if you want!
they're still on the MEC website here: http://www.mec-pickups.de/modules/products...15040&cl=EN
Thanks Simon. Was that the `De Luxe` or the `Archer`?
I honestly can't remember! I know I paid a bit extra for a solid top if that helps? Owen - great tip on selling the case. I only ever use the soft padded case, so may well follow your student's precedent and put the hard case on e-bay.
I've recently been having a fair biit of headless GAS (I know it's 80s but I like it), and i'm completely in love with my jazz bass at the moment which gave me a bit of an idea. I googled 'headless jazz bass' and didn't find anything, so I did this little mock up on paint. Don't worry, I wouldn't dream of modifying my jazz in any way, but I am building a project jazz at the moment for which headless could be a possibility. Just thought i'd post this to see what you guys think.
My honest opinion? - it looks plain wrong! I quite like some headless designs, and have a hohner steinberger copy which is a great little bass. But headless = modern designs like Status, steinberger etc IMO. Sorry!
Ohhh yeah that one! i was thinking the white one, i wouldn't chop that up!
No - the white one is a very battered Jap 70s re-issue, with EMGs. Fits like a pair of old slippers, and is a definite keeper.
Just out of interest, are the current Fender Standards MIM these days?
Yes - although you also have the "Amercian Standard", which obviously isn't!
Did both Foo Fighters songs, with Steve reading the words, and guitarists having had a quiet run through beforehand. "Learn to Fly" went well but "Long Road to Ruin" went a bit pear shaped in the middle, still we got through it
Good songs - we did The Last Song by the Foo Fighters for the first time tonight, and it went down really. A new gig for us tonight at the The White Horse in Quorn - which the landlord claims is the "best venue in Leicestershire" Was actually a pretty good night, and I even had a punter complementing my Stingray afterwards (but not my playing!)

Has anyone done the Shuker Self Build course?
that would be him the "taitycaster" i believe!
Yep - and here's his thread from the build. I've played the bass (I'm his Dad!) and it's actually very nice indeed. Pm Luke, and I'm sure he'll tell you how good the course is.
Ahhhh right, was that a jap precision?
Talking about me behind my back?! Its this one just - Mex P body, and now a Squier Classic vibe neck. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=41709 It actually sounds awesome, and I may bring it to the bash if it hasn't sold! The ATK has now sold, so I'm now planning to bring the Shuker, Stingray, Thumb, and fretless Jazz.
second thought is put a post in the wanted section and buy it from the classifieds on here!
Excellent advice - in fact this one looks cracking value http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=41709 But if you don't buy that, I would certainly look at some of the Japanese models. My 70s re-issue is a fantastic bass for the money.
How many basses can you play at once anyway?
They're not to play - they're to be looked at and posted in the gear porn section

I have 7 basses and 4 guitars, (plus another bass that's currently in France - don't ask!). And my son, who posts on here as LWTAIT, has another three basses and a guitar. So Mrs1964 has to put up with a collection of 15 guitars and basses in the house. We also have a 2 drum kits and sax belonging to my youngest son. And a piano. So your misses has nothing to worry about!
