1.
http://www.markbass.it/products.php?lingua...t=3&vedi=39 Stunning, had it for 4 weeks now, and sold everything else, just brilliant!!!! Matt
+1 for Mark Bass. I've got the Jeff Berlin combo, and it is simply brilliant. And a fraction of the weight of my old Ashdown.
 2. +1 to Markbass if you can stretch your budget a bit. I used to gig with an Ashdown MAG combo like yours - and like you I got completely fed up with the weight. I'm now using the Mark Bass Jeff Berlin combo and the weight difference is staggering. I can carry it with one hand, yet the power and sound is way ahead of the MAG. I always found the MAG a bit wolly - the Mark Bass is much clearer, more defined and punchier.
 3. I bought this some years ago as a standard Mexican Precision - but its been so modified over the years that now only the body is original! The body is a sunburst Fender Mexican Precision, which is about 7 or 8 years old. The neck is from a brand new Squier Classic Vibe Jazz - only bought this week (see below!). Pickup is a Basslines Quarterpounder, and the bridge is a Gotoh 201. Edit - just realised I also fitted non-standard knobs on this. They're black chrome with abalone inlay on the top. The second picture shows it reasonably well. Understated, but classy IMO! By way of background, I bought this as a bog standard Precision about 4 years ago. I fitted the Quarterpounder and the Gotoh bridge pretty much straight away. A couple of years ago I fitted a Mighty Mite fretless neck. I'd been thinking that I would like to fit the fretless neck to a jazz body, and recently saw a Squier Classic Vibe Jazz in a local store, was blown away by the quality for the price and bought it. I've now fitted the fretless neck to the Jazz, and switched the Squier Jazz neck to the Precision body giving the hybrid for sale here - hope that all makes sense! The body does have a ding on the side (see pics) and one or two very minor surface marks. The neck is perfect, and virtually unplayed. I have to say this is a fantastic neck. I've owned Mexican and US Jazzes, and this blows the Mexican neck out of the water, and is not far off the US neck. In the pictures there are a couple of pick guard screws missing - they'll be replaced before the sale. There are also holes where ashtray pickup and bridge covers were fitted at some time (but, of course, there would be on a Vintage P!) Looking for £225. PRICE DROP TO £200
 4. Bought my Ibanez ATK from me. Excellent communication, and great bloke to deal with. Thanks Pablo!
 5.
Exactly. I'm a retailer (although not in the music sector), and there's little that irks me more than customers saying, "And what sort of discount can you give me on that price?" They usually end up on the end of a blank stare and an enquiry (polite, of course ) as to why they should get a discount. I have yet to hear a logical response.
My Dad was a music retailer for a lot of years, so I understand where you're coming from, and I can understand retailers refusing a discount. On the other hand, if you asked my why I should get a discount, I would simply say "because I'm prepared to pay £x, and if you're prepared to take it, you have a sale". I have to confess that I have hardly ever paid ticket price on a new bass/amp. A couple of years ago Sound Control in Birmingham knocked £150 off a new Corvette $$ for me - and I hadn't asked for such a large discount, but simply asked what their best price was. They may not be a good example, of course, given their demise!
 6. The pickguard should be black on a 78 I think? Other than that (and the pickup obviously) I think it looks genuine from the pictures. The rust on the screws and string trees suggest its genuine - its pretty hard to fake that convincingly.
 7.
Love 'em, me. It'll be the 'Ray that's doing it though - pre-EB 'Ray's rock. I've had Hybrids on a few basses now - Jazz, another Jazz, Spector, 'Ray, brief flirtation with VMP, etc. Wish I'd found them years ago. If you didn't get on with the others though, they're just a different gauge. The Stainless Slinkys are good too if that's your bag.
+1. I've used Slinkys for years. I occassionally try other brands (including more expensive ones) but these seem to suit me best.
 8. Having just picked up my Shuker, I'm pretty GAS free at the moment - although I am beginning to miss the Corvette $$, which i sold to Budget Bassist last month!
 9.
Sorry stupid Q..Do the pups differ?
It depends on the model. As I understand it, the Streamer $$ and Corvette $$, for example, have the same pickups and electronics. The difference is in the body shape, neck construction etc, which is why the Streamer is more money. I'm assuming the MEC single coils on my Thumb will be the same as those on any MEC single coil equiped Warwick - the difference is really the woods used, whether its through neck or bolt on etc.
 10.
is the streamer a better bass than the Corvette? Thanks
It depends what you mean by better. Streamers are more expensive for similar specs, but as I understand it, that's mainly down to the construction methods used.
 11.
The Ibby above is a good rec, as is this one:- http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=40703 SR500. Easy to play, great woods, nice pickups and electronics. They cost around £350ish new.
That would be the same link as my post Great minds......
 12.
cheers for that. It's not for me but i am very interested in the answers as well. he want to play Rock/metal maybe a little funk.
If I was spending up to £250, I would be looking at Squier, Ibanez, Yamaha etc buying new. The Squier Vintage Modified Jazz would cover most types of music and seems to be a cracking bass for the money. But you'll get much better value buying used.
 13.
Aye up peeps What would you recommend as a good purchase Bass for £200 £250 budget? Links & Pics would be good All recommendations & advice would be greatly appreciated eye thank you
Depends on lots of things - what style of music you play, do you like skinny necks or thicker ones, what sound are you after? But in general terms, I think you'll struggle to beat this in your budget: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=40703 Not my bass, and I don't know the seller, but these are outstandingly good for the money (provided you like a very thin neck).
 14.
Has anyone any idea as to how he produce that raw throaty dry sound as featured in most of the bands early offerings ?
The nearest I've got (without resorting to ripping speaker cones!) was by using my Precision with a Hartke VXL Bass Attack pedal. Not 100% right, but you can get that trebly gritty sound. The Ashdown James Lomenzo gets close as well - maybe Ashdown should do a JJB signature pedal?!
 15.
*pokes head round door* Yorkshire bass bash will be better! *runs away*
Nah - no chance of anyone buying a round, going by the Yorkshiemen I know
 16.
Just been looking (webwise) at the `de luxe` and `Archer` basses on the Gear4music site. Seem reasonable looking, and they are certainly well priced, and I think they have sold a fair number. Does anyone have first hand info? The Archer is supposedly handmade, which is great providing the `hand` knows what it`s doing! Is there a catch?
I got one a couple of years ago. They're adequate, for the money. But i did buy a new bridge and pay for a decent set up. Still good value though, even building that into the price.
 17.
I tried an MM22 out in a local shop and I thought it was fantastic, soundwise fairly close to a Ray but obviously not a patch on it in build quality.
I'd second that. I've played LWTAIT's MM22 and its not a million miles from my 'ray in terms of sound. Pity OLP have lost the licence, as the ones I've played have been OK, given the price range.
 18. I do a fair bit of backing vocals for my band (and sing/shout lead vocals on one number!). I find you have to know the bass and vocal parts perfectly. At the same time, I never feel entirely relaxed with the bass part when I'm singing, and my playing is much less instinctive.
 19. Wow - that looks fantastic. The top looks the same as my Shuker single cut. And that fingerboard is jaw dropping. Another fantastic Shuker!
 20.
A related question: Do those of you with really expensive basses actually gig them? I don't think I'd want to take a bass worth £1000+ out to a pub gig. I suppose with vintage gear it's a bit different, because I wouldn't mind if it picked up a few scrapes, but a shiny new quilt-topped thing with matching wood knobs wouldn't look too clever with big dings in it.
I have to admit that I'd be very reluctant to take the Shuker out to some of the pubs we play, which is a shame, but I would be gutted if some drunken idiot spilled his beer on it (and that's just our drummer....). I think the Precision and 'ray will have to continue as main gigging basses. I'll probably take it to some of the ''nicer'' venues or private functions though.
 21.
Because Fender doesn't make basses that look like a lottery winner's dining table?
You could argue they do http://www.fender.co.uk/products//search.p...rtno=0196600821 but not as well (IMO!)
 22.
I'd really like to try a Shuker bass.
There'll be one at the Nottignham Bass Bash if you can make it!
 23.
I hate confrontation and won't stand for any on my thread. Oh no.
Lol! Well, I've just taken a delivery of a Shuker. I decided on a custom bass because, to an extent, any mass-produced bass is a compromise, however good it is. I have owned (and still own) some great Fender, Musicman, Ibanez, and Warwick basses, but ultimately they were all what someone else thought was a good design. By ordering custom I could go for any choice of body style, pickups, electronics that took my fancy. If I want a feature that no-one else wants, I can have it. A mass-produced bass has to sell to thousands of customers to make money, so their designs have to conform to the lowest common denominator. As to why Shuker, location was a factor. I live less than an hour from his workshop. But even so, having played some of his basses, they were all fantastic. And the great thing is that he didn't try to tell me what I wanted from my bass. He listened to what I was after and then advised on the best way to get that. I'm sure most of the other custom builders do the same, which again is one of the attractions of a custom build. And with Jon, you get a handmade bass for a very competitive price. You would pay more for many top end, mass-produced, basses.
 24.
Bring whatever you want There will most likely be other amps there, but you can if you want!
I'll be bringing my Markbass Combo - but the more amps the better I guess! Bass wise I'm now bringing the Shuker (its arrived!!), the Thumb, and the Stingray. I'll probably bring the ATK305 as well as its still for sale! Sam - hope you're bringing the $$?! I'd like to have a go on it again for old time's sake!
 25. All good advice on here so far. In particular I have played excellent Mex Fenders (my Mex P is great) but I've also played some aweful ones. The Squiers do seem to have a better reputation for consistency. I'm not sure of your budget, but if you're looking at a new Mex Fender, you might want to have a look at buying a used Japenese Precision. They are consistenly good, and crop up on here pretty regularly.
