I've never played a Gibson style bass, but I can't deny they look cool! I trust you wear it on a ridiculously long strap, playing with a pick
Seems to me Musicman porn thread lagging behind,, so here's mine... Coupla BC'rs may recognise thier cast off's.... Gotta love em... nice to get them out of thier cases
I've just spotted the inlay on the fretless fingerboard. What's the story behind that? Is it a limited edition of some sort?

Gotta love em... nice to get them out of thier cases
What a fantastic collection. I take it you're a Musicman fan?!! The natural 'rays look fantastic - especially the fretless. Here's my rather modest 2 band in natural. I only bought it last month, having had a year without a Stingray, and am loving it.
I've got nylon tape rotosound on my fender BG29, mind it's only 30" scale so tension is no problem.
same on my cheap no-name acoustic. They sound really nice too.
was there a black 4 string bass with block inlays that was a weird shape?
Sorry - don't remember seeing that! He was working on a maple Jazz type neck with black block inlays I think!

What was your first bass and why did you start playing?
simon1964 replied to damo200sx's topic in Bass Guitars
A black Hohner Precision copy bought circa 1982, back in the bad old days of cheap plywood copies. It was better than some, but it shows how far budget basses have moved on. -
details!!
Actually, the most unusual were a pair of 6 string basses shaped like a ric 4003, with white bodies, and a natural quilted maple top. Not sure whether they're being made for anyone on here, but they look incredible. Also a lefty Jazz looking good (albeit back to front!). I think that's Bassmonster's looking at his build diary, and very nice it looks too! He's also got a stunning White 70s style Jazz, with block inlays, as one of his stock items. I think its on his website, and it looks and plays awesome in the flesh. In fact, i spent a good half an hour drooling over other stuff, and wondering how I could persuade Mrs 1964 that I need another Shuker......

Fender Jazz Bass Special Fretless - Sounds Thin
These are great solutions, thank you both! I will investigate the best options for a pre and let you know. Hadn't even thought of getting one! Basschat is wonderful. Thanks again.
The Audere pre-amp is very good too. Or have a look at a set of EMGs. They will fatten the sound up and give a higher output more like your $$. -
sweet . I'm gonna email Jon for an update on mine
He seemed to have quite a few nearly completed basses around the workshop when I was there on Saturday - no doubt, several of them for Basschatters! Well worth the wait!
I think you've hit the nail on the head there. Mr Shuker has this amazing knack of keeping bass designs so sleek and stylish without making them look like exquisite coffee tables.
Thanks! That is actually exactly what I was looking for - something that looks a bit special, but still looks like a bass! I'm also blown away by the electronics on this. In active mode you have all the sounds you would expect from a good three band EQ. The surprise is the passive tone. In passive mode, the MM bridge pickup operates as a single coil, with the treble knob becoming a passive tone control. And its the nicest passive tone I've come across - Fantastic, punchy, Jazz tone.

Thanks for all the comments! It really does play and sound as good as it looks. And I've added a pic of the back, by popular demand!

Now finished, and collected this morning! I've posted some pics in the gear porn thread here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=39830

Just collected my new Shuker singlecut from Jon this morning. Its a black Walnut body, Asian striped ebony drop top with sycamore veneer between top and body. The neck's a 5 piece laminate neck (maple / wenge) with birdseye maple fingerboard. Electronics are Delano hybrid active/passive with MM +J pickups. Am very very pleased with it - really powerful sound, and plays like a dream!
Hi to all. (my first post) I was looking for some advice for selling a bass, so i came here =]. Basically i was looking at selling one of two basses, and im torn between which one and how much I would sell it for and where abouts, is ebay any good for selling basses??? Im stuck between selling either my Warwick thumb bolt on neck, or my spector euro, both 4 strings and have both been owned only by myself for 4 years. And neither bass has had any modificatoins no replacement pick ups, i think both basses have EMG pick ups so they sounded really nice. Each bass is in perfect working condition, both have some light marks on the back of the body from gigging. erh not sure what else to say about them..... I was looking at selling one of them and buying a fender aerodyne, as I had tried one not so long ago and really like the sound and feel of the bass. Any advice at all would be great, thanks for reading my post =]
Just my opinion, but don't sell the Thumb. First, they sound great. Secondly, Warwicks are going for peanuts on ebay at the moment, and I doubt you would get a sensible price for it. Its a good time to buy Warwicks, but not to sell them!
hullo fellow humans, i bought a bass today because it played and looked and sounded lovely, and came up second hand at what i thought was a good price..its a telecaster or 51 precision bass i think, but strangely, doesnt have either the single pick up of a 51, or the humbucker looking pick up of a tele, its got standard precision pickups(the kind that look like two piggy backing but are actually one)..other clues..its not that old, got spaghetti fender precion bass on the headstock and is a gringo(made in mexico), its very heavy, got pukka alnico magnets in the p/u's, has got a badass2 brige that is fitted as standard and its in a sort of tv yellow with white scratchplate. also it sounds proper, very warm and not too toppy..any ideas what model it is guys? ive never seen one like this before :-) thanking you..oh, and im going to try myhand at putting a pic on..
That's not a weird tele/precison - the Mike Dirnt's are cracking basses! Very, very underatted IMO.
I fell for the Behringer trick once..... never again.
Depends what you mean by the ''trick''. I had a Behringer tuner which was hopless. But some of their cheap stomp boxes do a job. At £15 a throw, you can't expect something built like a top of the range boutique pedal, and I would be reluctant to use one live. But their Sansamp clone (BDI 21?) has some really good sounds at a tiny fraction of the price of the real thing. I know you can get into the whole copy / ripoff debate, but some of their pedals do a decent job at a good price.
Any good? I just bought one because it was cheap. Have I fallen into the old Behringer trick or is it usable?
I've got one, and it does what it says on the tin. They're not the sturdiest bit of kit, plastic rather than metal casing, but they do an adequate job.
Simon's birthday is 5th Nov 64 See? 5 = Precision Cool. I hope he had the money. It would be really horrible to find the ideal bass like that and only have 50p available ...
Lol! Sadly not! I was very, very tempted, but it was in the States, and with the extra cost of getting it through customs, I decided against. And I've regretted it ever since! As you say, the 5 Doesn't relate to the 5th - every Precision made in November 1964 will have my "5 Nov 64" on it, (and I doubt I can afford any of them!)
haha , i suppose its just what feels and sounds right for me
+1. And I would definitely buy used if you can at the moment. Within your budget you could pick up any number of very nice basses on here - I've just sold a mint Warwick Corvette $$ on here for just over £400. You would pay well over £700 new.
I would.
How about that, chambered to reduce weight, and with some sort of Ovation style sound holes on the upper horn?
Just got an interesting email from Florian at Warwick, didn't even know this was happening until now! LINK Anyone entered/thinking of entering? My guess is that they'll probably end up with designs looking all quite similar - I mean, how many different singlecut shapes can there be out there? Haven't they all got just one horn? Sounds like a cool idea on behalf of Warwick anyway, good to see that they're letting their customers have an input into the design of their basses (although I suppose the Custom Shop have been churning out bespoke instruments now for some time!) Danny
Wasn't the Vampyre designed through a similar contest? Not sure whether that's a good precedent or not!
don't use Rotosound TruBass, they are very thick and would need work on the nut. LaBella black nylon tapewounds can usually squeeze into a nut cut for standard gauge
I've used Roto TruBass on my fretless Precision without needing any work on the nut - I normally use 50 to 105 guage, so reasonably standard.
One other thought that came to mind was only using the neck pickup and playing almost over the 24th fret, think it'd help? Cheers in advance.
That will help. I would suggest using flats, ideally the black nylon tapewound ones. They will give more of a double bass sound than steel roundwounds
