Methinks that the Traben is better suited to your musical direction, and could give a good array of useful sounds in the genres you specified. The SR500/505/506 are very good all-rounders, though. You may find it comes down to weight and neck profile in the end, in which case, the Ibanez will take some beating (assuming that you like slender/fast necks!)
+1. The SR500 series is amazing value for money.
 2.
I see someone is selling a $$ Corvette on this site for £450 - not me before you ask
If you mean the one OutToPlayJazz had for sale, I think that's just sold. I have an identical one which I might be interested in selling as I have Gas for a Stingray!
 3.
Your right Rich.... and I'd say they were even earlier than that..... I was working in a Music shop in Basildon, Essex when I left school around 85/86 and we took on the Hohner range.... I remember having a variety of Jack basses on the wall all different colours..... Think that's why I'm such a Status guy these days.... just loved the shape and the fact they were headless
Same here - I worked in my Dad's music shop during the mid 80s, and I remember he had the Hohner Jack range in around that time. Fantastic value for money. I recently bought one of the Hohner Steinberger ''stick'' copies, and again, they're great little basses.
 4.
It's a nice bass. However, I'd personally go for the '51 re-issue over the Sting signature: http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0271902503 It's pretty much the same bass, albeit with a slab body and without the (ghastly) 12th fret inlay, and is about £120 cheaper going by DV's prices. You also get the choice of butterscotch blonde as well as the sunburst finish – though I'd personally go for the sunburst. Oh... and I'd recommend you upgrade the rubbish two saddle bridge they ship on them to a four saddle one to improve the intonation. Either that, or go the whole hog and stick a Badass III on it Double oh... there's also a Squire version that runs at half the price again and gets really good reviews. Would be worth serious consideration since it's just for a backup bass. It only comes in blue – so isn't quite so "vintage" looking – but also comes with a much better bridge as standard. http://www.squierguitars.com/products/sear...rtno=0303080502
+1 to all of that. But personally I would go for the Mike Dirnt signature. 50s style body, headstock and pickguard, but with a split Precision pickup which, to my ears, sounds much nicer than the vintage 50s single coils. They also come with a Badass as standard (at least the Fender version does - I'm not sure about the Squier version). Link here: http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0138400306 Only downside is that they only come with a rosewood board
 5. The Streamer $$ also has a maple neck, whereas the Corvette is Ovangkol. I don't think that can have any effect on price, but it is worth taking into account - to me the Ovangkol neck actually feels nicer than than the maple one. I'm pretty sure the elctronics are the same on both. I've got the Corvette $$ and have to say it is a fantastically versatile bass. As others have said, the main difference seems to be the extra production costs for the Streamer body.
 6.
OK, so I've got some really nice basses. I don't really need more (ha ha!), but I mainly play Soul, Blues, R&B, and don't really have a 5 string which does it for me... In the past I mainly played 4 string, so my JV Precision (Fender Logo'd headstock) was pretty much perfect for the job. For my main gigging bass I now mainly use a Dean Edge 5, but though it plays well (and wouldn't be the end of the earth if damaged), it just doesn't do the right sound... I recently bagged myself a steal of a deal on a slightly shop soiled (you'd be pushed to tell now though...!) but brand new black and white Squier Jazz 5 for £100, but though it is reasonably playable, it is passive, and just sounds a bit flat. You all know what I mean. So here's the dilemma..... Do I try to improve the Squier or trade it and get something second-hand (or new maybe?) which is a little more decent? Bear in mind:- 1. This is for a jobbing bass, not one for studio use, to bring out on special occasions or lovingly play in the bedroom (I will be ordering a GB Rumour or another Wal for my 50th birthday in 2010 to take care of this need!). 2. Including trade, my budget for this would be £500 max. Thanks in anticipation!!
For classic soul and blues sounds, I would have a look at the Ibanez ATK305. Ideal tone for that sort of music, its active and will do anything from Precision to Musicman type tones (I actually prefer mine to my old Stingray - sacrilege I know!). And they have a more traditional look and feel to many five strings.
 7.
Punch factory now definately sold. Bump for the rest!
Zoom now sold. Bump for the Bassballs and the ?Behringer stuff
 8. Punch factory now definately sold. Bump for the rest!
 9.
Yeah Like an almost 'Simple music Autism' /quote] I think our guitarist suffers from this! He can learn any solo, note for note, and play it the same every night. Talk to him about improvisation or ''feel'' and he looks at you as if you're from another planet. They're a weird buch
 10.
cos otherwise there is nothing to hold the strings in place
Quote of the day
 11.
That's foul. Bye-bye, any interest in SX basses then. I suspect it's something to do with this + some lawyers: Jon.
Bit rich if it is - the rest of that Lakland is a 70s Jazz copy!
 12.
When you say 'with modded Bartolini pick-ups' do you mean that the bass is modded by having the pups inserted or the pups themselves have been modded/altered?
My son (LWTAIT on here) used to own this, I think between neepheid and the OP. It has standard (unaltered) Barts fitted. Its actually a cracking bass, and £80 is silly money! The Barts and pre-amp are worth that alone!
 13.
Right, I'll be coming to this, Might need a lift from the station, if that's alright with you. I sort of know your lad Luke anyway Zach
No worries - can sort some times out nearer the time.
 14. Bump - Buyer has had to pull out, so the Punch Factory is back up for sale
 15.
And dont do what i did and leave it plugged into the amp. It seems to drain the battery.
Actually - don't leave a jack in the bass, whether or not connected to the amp. It will drain the battery, so unplug when your not playing. On my basses, the sound does distort as Budget Bassist says, before the battery goes completely dead. It is surprising that more basses don't have some sort of battery life indicator. The Audere pre-amp on my old Jazz had one, but I've never seen another.
 16.
Nice one mate, the 29th is nice and booked now!
Hopefully you've booked the 28th - there isn't a 29th Feb this year Let me know if you need a lift!
 17. Well done BB! If anyone needs a lift either from North Nottingham or from the station give me a shout. I'll have LWTAIT with me, but can fit one or two more into the people carrier.
 18. Punch factory sold subject to the usual. Any interest in the other stuff?
 19.
Jon generally doesn't encourage people to take photos of other basses under construction so I'm only going to be able to give you a verbal description I'm afraid. He was answering his mobile this morning so it might be worth giving him a call perhaps?
Have been planning to give him a call - but if you do happen to notice a nearly completed single cut, ebony top, and birsdeye maple board, I would be interested in a verbal update!

 21. Edit - Aphex and Zoom both sold. Bassballs and the Behringer stuff still available. I've decided to sell a number of pedals which I'm not using: EH Bassballs - Russian model. Very solid, and still in its wooden box. £35 plus postage. Zoom B2.1u - lots of rave reviews on here, and it is a great bit of kit. Pedal is in mint condition. I have the tatty original box and the instruction manual (but not the cubase software - obviously doesn't effect the pedal itself). SOLD Aphex Punch Factory - nice transparent compressor. SOLD I also have a couple of cheap Behringer pedals which I'm open to offers on: Behringer Overdrive - surprisingly good clone of the Boss OD. Behringer Bass graphic EQ pedal - does exactly what it says on the tin! I should mention that I don't have mains power supplies on any of those as I run them from batteries. Might be interested in trades as well - depends what you've got! Would be particulalrly interested in one of the Korg Pandora thingies or something similar.
 22.
Could bring a ric if no one else has offered.
That sounds good!
 23.
Also i was gonna bring my reggie hamilton jazz unless anybody wants to see either my tobias or other musicman again
Reggie Hamilton would be good - always fancied a try on one of those. Not sure what amps are on offer, but I'm happy to bring my Mark Bass Jeff Berlin combo along. And I will have room for a couple of lifts for anyone between Mansfield and Nottingham
 24.
Anyone handy with a router in the vicinity of Loughborough? Geoff
Dave Mann Music in nottingham did some routing for me, not a million miles form Loughborough. I used to have an RD900 - fantastic basses, and very underrated compared to the Soundgear stuff.
 25.
Ahhh nice one
Now withdrawn - BB was right, I like this to much to let it go!
