Or is it because they imagine that the sig bass will somehow, by magic or osmosis, impart the skill, sound and success of said hero to the buyer? Even though the buyer has banana fingers, two left hands, no musical aptitude and would be better off buying a kazoo?

Some 70s Fenders are notoriously heavy boat anchors at 12 or 14 pounds and some are between 8 and 9 pounds. The only way you can tell is by picking them up and playing them. Which is a very good idea, as some of them are sublime players that sound amazing, and some... aren't.

If you want a pedal that's going to do bog-standard, behind-the-scenes remedial compression in a completely transparent way then it's probably not for you. But if you want a pedal that makes your bass sound super-lush while reigning in the more outrageous spikes and troughs in your playing then there's nothing better.
