It can be very unsubtle, depending... does the battery need changing? How are you powering it? How is the Blend control set?

Had one of those and liked it very much. I also really like the VT Bass for it's valve-y-ness. That and the fact it doesn't even pretend to have a valve in it, not even for marketing purposes, which is the usual reason.

Not ideal, I'll grant you. But it IS celluloid... it's a translucent top layer, so whether you used it with a black or white base guard would have a huge impact on the final appearance, I'm guessing. But the whole tort thing is such a pain in the bum, I'm tending towards mint or parchment for a vintage-type look. Depending on what colour the bass is, of course. Black always looks great for a 70s vibe.

Hmm, that could be a problem. I see there's a 100W version on eBay, though... IME 100 valve watts is usually more than enough for gigs.

I just go Bass > BDI-21 > Audio Interface > Computer > Studio Monitors. Sounds great. Don't need a home amp. I do have GAS for something like a Selmer Treble 'N' Bass 50 for gigs, though.

Aye. The number of 'bass players' who think that because they're playing a bass they need to add bass EQ is startling. In the past I've rashly lent my gear to other bands on a bill before only to return to my amp to find everything maxed out. And I was worried because I thought my rig sounded crap... duh. Why?? If playing an unknown rig, the first thing I do is set the EQ to 'flat', or what I imagine to be 'flat' - I'm looking at you, Hartke LH500 - or better still switch out the EQ entirely if that facility is available. Start from there. And keep the bloody volume down.

*SOLD* Precision Bass Body, White, £25 Posted Bought recently from this very parish. However I very stupidly forgot to ask how heavy it is, and relative to my current quest for featherweight components it IS a bit heavy, being around 2.8 kg or thereabouts. It's also a bit grubby, has various dings, chips, dents and scuffs, but nothing serious. It would make a good project body - either tidy it up and refinish it, or use as-is for a vintage 'relic', or at least a 'worn' look... It's made from a very strong and stable modern composite laminate, which the uncharitable would call 'plywood'. I say if it's good enough for Jens Ritter, it's good enough for you! The neck pocket measures 63mm at its widest point. The body is 44.5mm thick. Looking for £25 Posted. Feedback is in my sig. Now sold. I thank you! -

I'm a big fan of Mark at Limelight and have, shall we say, bought more than one of his creations. He is a master at the tort guard relic, but in all honesty I can't recommend his tort guards over Spitfire's. If an original vintage guard is shrinking and warping, wait until it's unusable before thinking about replacing it - it's going to shrink and warp anyway, whether it's on the bass or screwed to a board. And that tort on the OP's P Bass is superlative, it shouldn't be hidden! But then I like to buy toys and play with them, not keep them Mint In Box in a cupboard... -

Thanks for that Karl, very interesting... I'm assuming the Spitfire tort is some kind of poured resin, but I've no idea how it's done. There seems to be little information available. You can buy this stuff in sheets from Rothko and Frost, but as they say, the overall effect is dependent on what colour base you stick it to. Nope, you're quite right. I think Spitfire tort is excellent, or at least the product I've had has been. And don't forget, original vintage tort isn't cheap, either. My view is you either have to bite the bullet and shell out, or avoid tort altogether. Modern salami-slice tort just isn't an option. It's like farting on a beautiful woman, or something. And that can get expensive too, but it's probably for another thread...
