Does it really matter how long it takes as long you've set up in time?
From the point of view of punters and venue, not at all.
Can you buy virgins armpit hair on E Bay?
You can have some of mine. I'm not a virgin, but the hair is MUCH cheaper.
forget all the esoteric snake oil stuff (gold plugs, silver cable, sleeving woven from the armpit hair of virgins).
I demand virgin armpit hair!!
Always makes me smile when I see someone has paid out a fortune on the latest fad in cable world...
Especially Hi-Fi mains cables, which can be very silly money. I presume the buyers don't take into account that their £10,000 kettle lead is at the end of a very long supply chain of crappy wiring costing 60p a metre from Wickes. Another vote for OBBM, by the way. I've had many different kinds of cable from him over the years and have had problems with precisely none of them, ever. I'm pretty sure they will see me out.
See the drummer taking 30+ minutes to set up his kit seems pretty standard and generally tolerated. I don't understand! If I have to stand there waiting for them it's a real wind up. Thankfully there's normally a pub I can escape to
Pet hate is a drummer that very slowly and deliberately takes at least an hour to set up his kit. WTF?? I wouldn't mind so much, but it's inevitably impossible to set up yourself as he will also strew his cases and boxes over the WHOLE stage area.
This. And only this. My dream bass. Slab Precision.
Nice. I've had GAS for one of these since... well, 1966 basically.
...putting guitars and sticks away after sound check, mute all the outputs on the iPad leaving nothing for guests to turn up or down...
Our PA Guy/Roadie/Manager always stayed in the room and kept an eye on everything. It was basically an excuse to gurn at scantily-clad young women. 'I'm just looking after the band's stuff' he would leer, disturbingly. Thank God that sort of thing doesn't happen any more. -
It's definitely horses for courses, methinks.
It is. What did for me in the end was the 'act', i.e. the audience participation stuff, the false bonhomie and everything else necessary to 'work the room'. Lost the will to live in the end. I do miss the money, though. A proper pro function band is one of the few possible ways you can make a good living from music. -
I was thinking the same just recently. There are quite a few in this category. Looking at your first example, the casting looks a bit rough to me. The second and third ones may be OK as they're basically slightly heavier bog-standard Fender-type bridges. Being shallow, my fear is that such bridges, though functional, will make your bass look (and feel) cheap. I thought this may be worth a look. Good value and a nice take on the 'Badass' thing by a reputable brand. Of course you need to add postage on top, but if you were buying stuff from Thomann anyway it could be viable.
To sum up, we took a day off work, we left home midday to get to the venue, got home at 3am the following morning, meaning we had spent 15 hours in total plus a 100 mile round trip in our cars, doing this gig. It was our first function gig, and naively, we agreed to do it for just £250 because we were told other gigs would come our way from the company on a regular basis, the rest of the guys thought it was good for our CV doing a real “posh” gig like this, but I was the odd one out and left the band a few days later because I just didn’t want to do any more gigs like this.
Good grief. The crap you put up with is really par for the course (mostly). But £250?? I'm not surprised you left. A pro function gig like that should be charged at around five big ones. And I bet QW got even more than that. -
Warmoth in the US made me a beautiful neck to order and it's the best sounding neck I've played. No doubt I'll come to my senses in the fullness of time, as I usually do.
...handed an album to the bride full of photos of the groom in uncompromising positions with various other females that he had been with very recently. Weddings are a pain in the arse and have to be priced accordingly. As you discovered, there is a LOT of waiting about. Typically you have to be their early on to set up, play long sets and then wait until the end before you can pack up. 6 hours is actually not bad. People think weddings are good money, but when you work it out, the hourly rate per person is not that great. You have to enjoy playing and hanging out with your bandmates. Yes, I know. -
Active 1963 precision anyone?
discreet replied to randythoades's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Clearly a Duff McKagan signature bass. Mind you, there were a lot of drugs about in the 80s... -
If the power supply was Up to it is could put out 35 watts with a square wave. Hardly a monster and "hefty" it ain't.
35 watts is considerably more than 15 though. My point was that valve amps do things differently to solid state amps, which is hardly news. Turned out to be a cab issue anyway.

Remember that Pino Precision we all thought was a tad overpriced...
I apologise for irritating you. You do have a choice not to be irritated, it’s all in your mind. You are telling me someone is going to spend £7k and then gig that unreliable effects unit? They’re £140 new for the vintage 70s one. The latest model is under £80.
Please don't assume that you know what or what is not in my mind, you have no idea. And I'm not telling you anything - but I will say that (in my opinion) there are as many different types of collector as there are collections - there is no possible way you can speak for all of them. You said once that you only post when you're absolutely sure that you're right. But no-one can be absolutely sure they are right, not all the time. There are facts and there are opinions - and there are many ways of posting both. Steve Browning quoted the same post that you did, but made his point in a way that made me laugh. There's the difference. Today's word is HUBRIS. -
Not at all. These are bought by collectors who prize them for their rarity and as a piece of history. It’s unlikely they’ll ever be used.
You seem very sure about that. I'm sorry to tell you that you're not always right - you consistently post opinion as fact. It's irritating. -
It must be part of the collector's mentality to see additional value in hardware because of who owned it previously. I have no time for that.
Me neither. Do people think that if they buy a bass (for example) that was owned by a famous bass player that they will somehow, by osmosis, suddenly be able to play and sound like said player and instantly enjoy the fame and success of that player? Or what..? Buying a phase pedal previously owned by [ROCK STAR] at an extortionate price isn't going to help you record and produce a million-selling album, is it? Unless you were on your way to recording such an album anyway, of course... Anyway, I like Behringer pedals. They're nineteen quid. -
4 in a row is just more aesthetically pleasing. I've always thought this, since long before I played bass. I just love the look of a Fender headstock.
Technically a triumph of form over function, but I agree totally.
