When are you selling it? Tomorrow? Day after? lol
Offers should be made via PM only.
Entwistle pickups are indeed great. For the money, in fact.... they're brilliant.
They're excellent, regardless of cost. The fact that they're affordable could actually work against them. The marketing concept that something can only be good if it's expensive stalks the land like a... stalking thing. I think Entwistle would sell a lot more pickups if they were four times the price!
Strap buttons! Are those still in the post?
We have a winner already! No, I've got 'em... just haven't fitted 'em yet. PM an address and I'll get your half a biro in the post.

My First Assembly - '76' Jazz Bass Sound Clip As a committed P-bass man of more than 40 years, I have a long-standing love/hate relationship with Jazz basses. I like how they look (mostly), I like how they sound (sort of) and I like how they play (up to a point). And yet… when I don’t have one I want one, and when I have one, I’m always looking to move it on… WHY?? My most recent GAS was for an aged Oly White late 70s-type Jazz with a black guard and maple neck - you know the vibe - but without blocks and binding... I don’t like blocks and binding. So I put one together, or at least as close as I could get. This is the first time I’ve ever assembled a bass from bits and the first time I’ve finished a body and neck from the raw wood. I’m fairly pleased with the results, given I’m a complete noob and it was all done with rattle cans. It’s not perfect, but the next one will be better. I learned a lot about the nature of nitro lacquer and the processes of sanding and wet-sanding …and how a bass goes together. Constantly learn new stuff folks, it keeps dementia at bay! Now… what did I come in here for again..? Specifications Paulownia lightweight Jazz body, vintage white Canadian rock maple Jazz neck with maple cap, amber tint Black 3-ply pickguard Alan Entwistle JBX Jazz pickups Schaller BMFL-C 70s tuners Kluson 70s Jazz bridge with slotted-screw saddles Fender CIJ 62 RI control plate, knobs and electrics Fender ‘F’ stamp neck plate with black cushion Fender string tree Fender strap buttons Fender 1969-1976 Type ‘C’ decal D'Addario NYXL 45100 roundwound strings Weight: 7lbs 7oz (very light!) I couldn't decide which pickups to fit. Fralins? Lollars? DiMarzios? To be honest, I was running out of cash so I bought a pair of Alan Entwistle’s JBX pickups, having read some good reviews here and elsewhere. I planned to substitute them with something more prestigious as funds allowed. But! When I soldered them in and fired them up, I was pleasantly surprised. I thought they’d be OK, but they're better than good, they're great. So I'm keeping 'em. What I didn't expect was for the bass to be so light. In fact, the Schallers make it a little neck-heavy, so I may just get some of those licensed Hipshot Ultralites for maximum calorie-loss, in which case the bass will weigh in at around 7lbs. Very rare for a Jazz bass, especially when you consider some of the old 70s examples were real boat anchors. The first to point out what's missing wins half a biro. Good luck!

Necks - Advice on Allparts/MM/NW Guitars

Necks - Advice on Allparts/MM/NW Guitars
discreet replied to AndyTravis's topic in Accessories and Misc
I dunno, I think of AllParts as second only to Fender. If you can find what you want in stock, of course. Not always easy... I'm thinking of ordering a Musikraft neck, you really can specify multiple parameters... all too often aftermarket necks aren't to the spec I want. -
Is it too late for me to learn to read sheet music?
discreet replied to Rocker's topic in Theory and Technique
If you enjoy doing it it's never too late for anything.
^^ What he said. I'm 58 and learning how to put bass guitars together. It's never too late. When you're 90 you'll wish you'd learnt to read music thirty years ago, or something. -
...it was originally mine. Always wondered what happened to it.
That's great. What are the chances? Loving that pic, too. Hair! You should buy it back and keep it for posterior.

Wow! That's a rare and impressive instrument and is historically important! However, I can't see any situation where I'd need a 4-string and an 8-string bass in the same song! Still would buy it though, if I had spare cash sloshing about. Of course I have not...

Wow, looks like the ad is gone - the position must be filled!! Dammit, I missed the chance to join a band that had never met each other before. I bet that would have been great...

How to handle a change of musical direction in a band
discreet replied to lownote's topic in General Discussion
I'd try C without doing B at the same time. Then do A. If you don't like that, try B and if no joy, D. E is A while doing F, which is looking for another band. -
Contact the seller, talk to him and go and check it out. If it's not as it seems, walk away. Could be a bargain - when someone stops playing their instrument they have a lesser value of it as it's not important to them any more. If that makes sense.
MIM Classic 50s for a new-feeling bass, Road Worn for a, well worn-feeling bass. Both good, imo Road Worn edges it due to the comfy worn-in feeling of the neck.
Definitely. May be my imagination, but the RW seems lighter and more resonant somehow.
-
So does that mean by definition the MiM Roadworn is a sort of 57 re-issue or did 2TSB persist beyond the introductory year (and apologies to the OP for hijacking!)?
The late-year 57 P was a 2TSB with gold guard and one-piece maple neck, so maybe the RW is a RI of sorts... not so sure about the fiesta red version, though - according to some sources Fender custom colours were available from the mid 50s, but I've not seen an original P bass in fiesta red that's not from the early 60s. It's a shame Fender don't do a blonde Roadworn, I'd be well up for that!
I guess that logically the 57 should be the first version, so something close to the Sting model, different shape and pickup.
IIRC, the Precision first appeared in 51, then what you could call the 'Sting' version (two-colour sunburst with white guard) was from late 54 to mid-57, the 'new' version with humbucking split pickup, revised pickguard and headstock shape was from mid-57. Rosewood boards appeared in 1959 and tort guards around 1960. All these dates are fluid - being Fender there were aberrations and exceptions aplenty depending on availability of parts, etc.
Sticking my neck out here but...was 3TSB introduced for 58?
You are correct. In 58 you could get a 3TSB with gold guard and one-piece maple neck and in 59 a 3TSB with gold guard and rosewood board - which was only available for one year, hence its rarity. 3TSB, tort guard and rosewood board appeared in 1960. All approximate, of course - Fender transitions are notoriously hard to date with 100% accuracy.
...I have to explain which ones are the basses and which are the (lead) guitars and what they're used for in a band.
Funny how we endlessly agonize over our basses and what they look like, when generally your average punter can't tell the difference between a bass guitar and a banjo at three paces.
Still sound like quiet a lot money for a MM mind you.

I bought a classic 50s Precision last week, MiM but it's better than the standards made there.
Yes. One shouldn't regard these as 'regular' Mexican basses, because they are much better than that. The Roadworns in particular are on a par with any USA P basses in my opinion.
I have never found aftermarket necks that match those big 50's necks...
The 1.75" nut width, 7.25" board radius one-piece maple necks on the MIM 50s basses are as good as anything out there. Yes, they are difficult to source as aftermarket items, as I discovered just recently. The options are to import one from a specialist in the States (expensive), have one built by a luthier in the UK (ditto) or buy a bass with one fitted. At £824 or thereabouts these MIM 50s P Basses are astonishingly good value. They play really well and sound fantastic. If you want 'that' P Bass sound there's no more affordable way to get it.
Any particular style of neck? Black dot fret markers, standard Fender-size tuner holes and heel width. A late 50s P Bass neck, in short. OR... The same, only with a rosewood slab board, clay dots and no skunk stripe.
