Prevailing wisdom on muting E and A string
discreet replied to Cestrian's topic in General Discussion
Or you can bypass all this by playing with a pick and palm muting. -
He kind of knows what he's talking about!!
No 'kind of' about it.

Wow, that's the way to draw people in with your pictures. -
Fretted 4 for me all the way. I dabbled with fives to see what it was all about, but though it was interesting, I don't need the extra notes and I don't need the extra weight. I especially didn't need the confusion of swapping from 4 to 5 and back again. I'm a simple soul, me... Never tried a fretless in anger, though. Who knows, I may be the next Jaco, right...? Right...? (Tumbleweed, crickets, etc.)

Listen to music you like (or even don't like) and pay particular attention to what the bass player is doing. It's often the case that less is more. Fills and runs are all well and good - but timing, feel and groove are much more important. IMHO, of course.
Can't believe it's been over a week already since the Bash... Still buzzing from it actually - it was a good one!
And I missed it - again! Bah! Definitely coming to the next one if I have to shuffle there on my knees... -
Yawn...
Is fatherhood-ing making you tired..? Bless.
Why are some talented people so disorganised ...drives me nuts .
Me too, but it's largely a stereotype - the wild, carefree artist who isn't bound by the conventions of society, man. The most successful musicians I know are very well organised, which is why they're successful. Not much happens if you don't get up in the morning and put your shoes on. -

I was wondering what the difference was, too. Very interesting. The Wilkinson single-coil that was fitted as stock to the HB PB-50 was really great, but obviously not an expensive component. The current Roswell pickup isn't as good (in my opinion). It amazes me how great the price difference is between budget and premium pickups. As dood says, it's really all about the coil material and the windings, but regardless, how can one justify hundreds of pounds for a P pickup...? I was once of the opinion that higher-output pickups must be 'better' in some way, but latterly I've found that a lower output (though ostensibly needing more amplification) provides a much more balanced, natural and 'authentic' tone overall.
We had a mix up which we both sorted out quickly with great comms and he was a true gent throughout.
Jim is being very diplomatic, here - I had a 'senior moment' and sent him the wrong item. He was very nice about it. Thanks Jim!

Sold Jim an OBBM lead. He paid up very quickly, and normally I'd just say what a great chap he is (true) and that would be that. However, I sent him the wrong cable, which then necessitated me sending him the right cable (obviously) and putting him to the trouble of returning the wrong cable. Jim, being very sensible, suggested we meet up in SE London (where I live) to exchange cables and avoid all that faffing about at the Post Office, to which I readily agreed. However due to circumstances beyond my control I had to cancel this arrangement less than an hour before the meeting. Therefore we had to go through with the postal exchange, Plan B. And it was all MY fault! Jim was very tolerant of this outrageous muppetry, returned the 'wrong' cable to me post-haste and is obviously one of those guys you can trust with your life even though you've never met them... Thanks for the deal Jim, once again I'm very sorry for the totally unnecessary complications!!

I'm no expert on these, but it certainly looks the part.

Frank bought some block markers from me. All very good, fast payment, no issues, would deal with again, no problem!
Some people just don't spend enough time listening to and learning their parts
And even when they do, it's still bloody wrong. I'm convinced people have just got cloth ears, 'musicians' worst of all! Edit: I think what is needed is a band consisting entirely of bass players. Bass players who are prepared to sing, play drums, keyboards, brass and guitars. Now that would be some band. -
A band is a team when writing songs. If it's a dictatorship and you're told what to play then what a sh***y band...

Not all bands write songs. In cover bands, the role of "dictator" or leader can be very useful in making sure everyone does their bit. IME anyway
Quite. Usually me. I should get a 'You're Playing It Wrong' t-shirt printed, it would save time. -
The problem is that it's still down to the individual to check and keep up with things.
This. To paraphrase an earlier post - you're either keen or you're not.
