...I know some people who'd much prefer a US P bass and plenty of others who don't like roadworn / reliced instruments - but honestly, don't knock these till you've tried one...
Thank you sir... the whole 'road worn' thing is a total red herring, anyway. This bass is all about the feel, the playability and the sound, all of which are top-drawer. I didn't see any need to upgrade the pickup myself - in my view it sounds very lush indeed as it is, but of course that's a very personal thing. -
*SOLD* Fender Road Worn Precision, Fiesta Red My musical direction has changed somewhat and now I need a new computer more than I need this bass. So with great regret and sadness, this very nice Road Worn P is up for grabs. You only have to play a RW to realise that it is quite unlike any other Mexican Fender. The neck in particular is excellent - one-piece maple, skunk stripe, truss-rod adjustment at heel, walnut cavity plug, vintage frets, 1.75" (44.45mm) nut width, 7.25" radius, rolled edges. It's also very straight and a low action is possible with flats. The bass is lovely and instantly feels 'right' in the hand. The 'road wear' is sensitively executed and very plausible. The ageing of the hardware in particular is excellent. Reverse-vintage tuners, threaded saddles and a period 51-61 spaghetti 'F' decal complete the look, along with a slightly 'worn' 1957-type gold anodized pickguard. There are screw-holes for a tug bar and ashtrays, but these are not included. I'd like to say it plays like butter - however I want to keep a little credibility, so I won't. No fret buzz, no rattles, intonation spot-on all the way up. This is a really good neck, folks. And the bass has 'that' warm, round yet punchy and articulate P-Bass tone that everyone's after. Possibly aided by the La Bella 760FS flats it's wearing. These are great basses and at used prices, almost unbeatable - you can get everything you would expect from a venerated USA P for the price of a new standard MIM. I'm asking £645 for this one - RRP is currently around the £1200 mark. Ideally I'd like cash on collection (bass is in SE London), but the 'Inc' in the title means 'delivery included' - if you don't actually live in Land's End or John O' Groats, that is. I'm happy to drive a fair way - as I suffer from 'courier anxiety' and would rather not post - but we can talk about that later. And now some pics - the bass isn't quite so blatantly pink in the flesh, it's a factory Fender fiesta red finish. Now SOLD, thanks for all the interest.

*SOLD* Markbass SA450 http://www.markbass....-detail/sa-450/

300W @ 8ohms, 500W @ 4ohms
7.5lbs (3.4kg)
3.39 X 14.5 X 11.9 inches (8.6 X 36.8 X 30.2 cm)
This is one of Markbass's earlier Italian pro amp heads. It's essentially the same as a Little Mark II - only with extensive parametric low and high Mid EQ facilities, Line Out volume, two combo Speakon/Jack sockets and DI pre/post switch. The later LM III included most of these features, but not the dual Speakons and not the parametric Mid EQ, which allows you to quickly and easily dial in an EQ for any room. It has a few minor age and use-related scratches - as you would expect - and there is a very small ding on one corner (pictured) that is not visible when the amp is cased. These issues are purely cosmetic and do not affect function in any way. This is a great-sounding amp with proven Markbass reliability. This example comes complete with its original case, which has a very useful cable pocket and integral apertures for the cooling fan on one side and air vents on the other. All you do is unzip the flaps front and back, connect mains, cab and bass, and off you go. Also included are the original shoulder straps if you want to carry it rucksack-style and a pair of genuine Markbass ears if you want to install the amp in a rack. Taking into account the minor ding and because I want a quick sale, I'm asking just £225 - which will see this prime Italian hunk of warm, clean heft winging its way to your entrance via PorcelFarce express48 (postage included). It really is silly money for a proper pro amp. Item will be very well-packed and I will PM an ETA and tracking information to the buyer. Payment is via bank transfer only please. Feedback is in my sig. I thank you! *SOLD" Limelight P-Bass Pickguard, 13-Hole 3-Ply, Parchment *£25 Posted* This is a relic parchment pickguard made by Mark at Limelight. It was fitted to my lovely Dakota Red Limelight P-Bass. I swapped it out for a relic mint guard, then sold the bass. Which, of course, was a mistake. So it's knocking about and I have no use for it, so here it is. It's a standard 13-hole parchment/black/parchment guard that will fit a USA P-Bass. It is a fairly light relic job so if you're after a subtle 'used' look, then this is for you. I'm after £25 Posted via bank transfer, please. I will PM the buyer with all relevant information. I thank you!
I'm happy sitting on my arse doing nothing.
I'm not, but each to his own. There's no point in running yourself ragged doing things you're not particularly into just to give the impression you're a happy, fully-rounded individual when you're not. In fact I am fully-rounded, but I think that's more to do with the current mrs discreet's cooking.
I'm 52 & pretty much ready for death.
I felt the same when I lived in Wales...
Stuart Spector and many others are in agreement!
I certainly think there's something in it. I prefer the sound of one-piece maple necks, particularly if they are a good handful of wood. Fnarr. Don't ask me why, or what proof I have, for there is none.
-
Leo spent a long time experimenting with scale length and pickup placement. The decision to use ash or alder was largely down to practical considerations.
-
Oo-er, we're getting dangerously close to saying that body wood has a bearing on tone!

And as alluded to above, there are some very nice non-Fender basses available from the likes of Mike Lull, Lakland, Sandberg, G&L, Dingwall, et al... just to put the cat among the bath water. Or something.
1989 Sunn Mustang from an Argos catalogue in disguise.
Thanks! That's my Halloween costume sorted.

The question no one has asked yet...ta dah!!

Surely doing it standing up with a strap on is its own reward..? Then there's fingering A minor, doing it deeper, the big bottom end... and so on and so forth. -
...They can range from very warm and woody to harsh and brittle.
And we haven't even mentioned flats, rounds, fingers, pick, amps, cabs, action, pickups...
