Posting this as a favour... Established covers band of 35 years standing seek a competent bass player with good pro gear and transport. Based near Dartford, but we gig all over the south east, home counties and further afield if the money's good. We have lots of paid gigs coming up so you will need to learn songs quickly. We are are semi-pro, but with a pro attitude and appearance and are in our 50s, so likewise would be ideal. Rough idea of a set would be Apache, FBI, Theme from the Deerhunter, Ghost Riders in The Sky, Telstar - then rock 'n' rollers like Johnny B Goode, Be My Guest, Blue Suede Shoes, Pretty Woman, All Shook Up, Lucille, Move It, Heartbeat - with party-type numbers like The Twist, Hi Ho Silver Lining. Rockin' Robin, Bad Moon Rising, etc... but very open to your ideas, too. If this seems like something you could be interested in and committed to - and importantly you can play and do 'the steps' then please do get in touch. They are a friendly bunch and play around 40 gigs a year. They are all paid gigs. PM me if you're interested and I'll pass on your details.
I just gave away that I'm from the States... scratchguard I mean...
Scratchplate. But we say pickguard too.
I've tried it that way round - but my rack mounted amps would stick out - which is worse...
Oh God no, it's an aesthetic nightmare. I'd just use the BF cab. Or the Berg. But not both. Maybe if the berg were on the bottom it would help a bit?

are we being ripped off by the shop or manufacture?
discreet replied to bassjim's topic in General Discussion
Any excuse to gouge the consumer. Decimalisation, Referendum to join the Common Market, Referendum to leave the EU, general election, Saturdays, holidays, post-holidays, having a pee, breathing... pretty much anything at all will put prices up. -
Would it help to turn the Berg on its side? But then the logo would be sideways - also unacceptable.

Ha ha, yes that'll do it. My OCD would not allow the overhang, however.
You asked for it?
Ohh... my God, that is fantastic, even by Mark's standards. It looks exactly like a genuine 60s tort guard. It's even got the thin black pinstripe layer!! I could lose myself in that all day long! Nice work! Oh no... what would that look like on my fiesta red Road Worn P?? by which I mean, oh no, Spitfire GAS!! Bad!! You're right, we need another thread for all this! Nice big hi-res pics of it on your bass when poss, please!

*SOLD* HIPSHOT KickAss™ Bass Bridge Fantastic bridge this, a fine modern take on the Leo Quan BadAss bridge and the only one of many I've had in decades that actually made any difference to my tone. Very happy with the usual Hipshot quality and the fact it's a straight swap for a standard 5-hole Fender P or J fitting. Comes complete with brass inserts, but steel ones are an option from Bass Direct for around a fiver. Adjusts in the usual ways for height and intonation, but there is also an appreciable amount of string spacing adjustment to be had too, by moving the saddle inserts laterally and locking them with a grub screw. Nice, solid engineering and satisfyingly chunky. Bought brand new very recently, done just one gig with it so great condition (see pics). Thing is, my OCD is such that it won't allow a non-standard part on my P Bass, even though it's a Fender Road Worn from 2011 and therefore not exactly vintage or anything. But there it is. And the KickAss is of a size that I can't even get a bridge cover over it to hide it. So it has to go and I have refitted my lovely original threaded-saddle bridge. Here's the blurb from Hipshot: https://store.hipsho...ct_detail&p=426 £45 including postage to your door. Payment will be via bank transfer only, please. Item will be well-packed in its original box with all bits and pieces and sent via an appropriate method. I will PM an ETA and any tracking information to the buyer. Feedback is in my sig. Now some pics... I thank you!

80's brands that tried to kill your bass playing.

Audition amps, from Woolworths. Terrible, but all I could afford at 14. Another vote for Kay guitars. My first 'proper' bass was a short scale EB copy by Avon, not much better! -
I'm surprised at you Discreet. We have a lovely drummer. He goes by the name of Dad3353 and he has a luverly set of road worn clay bongos.
That is true, but he lives in France.
My Spitfire tort Precision pickguard has just touched down...
Can we see the pics, pleeease? (But probably not in this NBD thread)...
-
Unless it was Spitfire tort I doubt it would be much like 60s tort. Sorry, I have a bit of a thing about it.
-
...mine are lovely... maybe I'm too selfish and I'm keeping all the nice ones?
If you could spare just one lovely drummer I'd be very grateful.
-
Your drummer sounds like an idiot.
Christ, again? What is it about drummers that makes them so irritating, so tedious?
-
Proper tort is just so SWEET. None of the modern stuff has that deep 3D celluloid loveliness. Very nice bass, I can just imagine what it smells like.
-
Depends. A pro project with a plausible reason for using a particular bass? I'd probably go along with it. A half-assed hobby band that plays once a month for nothing and it's about one guy being a dick? Probably not.
-
Completely normal. Everyone should own a P bass, it's iconic, the bass that started it all. They are very playable, sound great and sit in the mix perfectly. Don't fight the urge, just buy one. You'll feel much better for it.

Is the Barefaced big baby 2 the best small cab?
discreet replied to Prince_phil's topic in Amps and Cabs
...a big low end will be harder to tame in a difficult room and in the band mix. Emphasising the low mids usually cuts through a noisy or full sounding band so the bass can be clearly heard, rather than just felt. Listen to the radio and CD's. You don't hear boomy, muddy or indistinct bass (unless it's a badly recorded live album). No matter how low the notes go you can always clearly hear them. That isn't always the case playing live. So if you EQ out the real low frequencies you can actually end up with a better sounding bass.
+1. You don't want a lot of low end on stage. It just turns everything to mud. Everyone needs to clearly hear what's going on. If the engineer wants to add low end FOH then it's up to him. He won't thank you for insisting on it. As said above, most of what sounds like low bass actually isn't, because you can hear it. True low bass is a feel thing. Control of mids is where a good bass guitar sound is at. -
Your band mates are wasting their time and yours. Get out now and find something worth doing. You'll wonder why you stuck with them for so long.
-
I think you can use a footswitch but I have a feeling that you can't do it per channel, it's global - so it's all on or all off. I'm guessing, however. Might be an idea to Google the PDF manual for the mixer in question and see what's what?

Good! From little acorns... never too late... erm... nowt as queer as folk... um... never wipe your arse with a broken bottle. Seriously though, good luck. Playing with other people is good for the soul. So to speak.
