Why are music stands not acceptable in guitar bands?
discreet replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
Wasn't the best post of the last thread something like... If I went to a gig and saw a music stand I'd walk straight out?
Hee, hee. Yes, but no-one can remember who said it. -
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.
Or as Dorothy Parker said, upon being asked to provide a sentence including the word 'horticulture': You can lead a horticulture, but you can't make her think.
Its nice to have a polished, well learned , deeply ingrained set of music and lyrics and have no need of stands, but it takes a while for a non pro working band to achieve that. Think the last thread threw up loads of pics of ageing legends all using stands
Not too long if the non-pro working band bothers to learn the bleeding material between rehearsals! As for ageing legends using stands: We don't use 'em because we're in amateur bands with a pro attitude. Ageing legends use 'em because they're in pro bands with an amateur attitude. Or maybe they just have Alzheimer's. And of course there's always the possibility they have Alzheimer's. -
I'm watching Lincoln at the the minute... I imagine if they remade it with the cast referring to their scripts throughout, it would be pretty cack.
Total cack. Like The Archers.
Our singer... will open his binder on the first song page and lay it on the grill of his monitor. I usually get calls for more of this or that in his monitor because he can no longer hear it. The dozy twat!!
-
I didn't think you could get darker than a P with the tone rolled off!
Who said that?? [JOKE]
I thought it was a reliability thing.
Also I forgot to mention, the jack socket was loose and my lead wasn't locating firmly enough for my liking.
Where or how do you connect it?
It's soldered in where the original cap goes, I presume... I'm not that great with electronics or a soldering iron, which is why I make the trek to the south coast to visit John in his man-cave and get him to do it. Always a pleasure and never a chore.
Ha! Glad it's not just me then . I usually add the first note and sometime the song chords to my playlist and tape it somewhere discreet. As you rightly say, it's usually a safety net that's not needed, but very nice to have when it is!
Having said I don't use a music stand, I do have a set list on the floor and I do write the first note (NOT the key) of each song before the title, just in case I have a senior brain fart and completely the forget the whole song, or where I am, or WHO I am, or what I'm doing... (it happens). The thing being, if I can get the first note right there's a fair to middlling chance the others will follow, and in the right order. -

It's because guitarists aren't proper musicians. Seriously though, In theory I don't mind musicians having stands in front of them if needed per se, but I don't do it myself. No band I've ever been in has used them. Having to sort bits of paper out at gigs is one more chore on the list I don't need, as far as I'm concerned. And I like to be well-rehearsed. What really gets on my tater tots is when singers have a music stand in front of them - because they haven't bothered to learn the lyrics. Worse is when they read the lyrics from a phone or tablet. And have to wear their reading glasses to peer myopically at the words. How crap does that look? It's insulting to the audience in my opinion. The punters bothered to turn up and listen to you, the least you can do is learn the bloody material properly!! Amateurs! -
Little off topic, what does the Sprague pacer cap do? The Kiogon treatment you mean a new wiring harness yes? Again, what does this do? I am genuinely interested too, not trying to start anything
Sprague Pacer 0.1uF cap cuts more treble (i.e. makes it 'darker') when you roll off the tone control on a passive P. John fitted new CTS pots, Switchcraft Jack and vintage wiring as well because the volume pot had seen better days and I thought while I'm on, I may as well get the lot replaced, thus negating any worries regarding reliability and so on. At least for a good while, anyway.
Just looks like a port to me, and I'm guessing whatever happens in there, it is partially occluded to cause some of the desired effect.
Don't be fooled by the pics - the lighting and the way I had to take the pic foreshortens everything and makes it look like the ply is close to the 'port', but it's actually a good 30cm (12") from the outer surface of the cab. And as the cab is 60cm (24") tall vertically overall, that's quite some enclosure. As I understand it, a port has just one tuning frequency. The hybrid resonator has two tuning frequencies, one lower than a typical port-tuning frequency and one higher (hence the 'hybrid' bit). The overall effect gives you extended lows that you otherwise wouldn't get from a relatively small box like the Two10. Or something. I could be wrong of course and would be delighted to stand (or sit) corrected.
Mark, LOVE that shot of the P and rig
Thanks Karl. Your Road Worn has had the KiOgon treatment and sports an orange Sprague Pacer cap. Lush and velvety! Can also do Thundery!

Thanks Dad! And congratulations to everyone else who won.

If you spend enough time in the Posting Editor it should Autosave on a regular basis. I'm not sure how you manually save on here. I sometimes have everything go tits-up for no apparent reason and it turns out I've accidentally hit a format key or something with my giant banana fingers. But then you can't replicate the error deliberately - it's just something that happens occasionally. Computers, eh?

Having wasted time and effort on multiple occasions, what I do is compose the ad in Notebook or Word (along with my pic URLs) then paste it all into the Basschat Editor for posting. Then if it goes walkies, at worst you only have to cut and paste your ad and post it again. Of course, you need to regularly save your Notebook or Word file, in case that goes ta-tas as well.
Bugger, I'm away next week, I'll miss the sale on Monday
Ha! If the cab performs well at gigs it's not going anywhere. I reckon one of these (and an Eight10) would sort you for ANY situation. In fact, three 12ohm Two10s would probably do it - 4ohms total.

Tried to take a couple of pics by shining a light down the 'port'. There are... things in there. I carefully stuck my hand in the port and could feel shaped ply things and soft damping things. I had trouble getting my hand out - like a monkey with a fistful of peanuts in a jam-jar - and for a wild moment I imagined I'd have to spend the rest of my life with a Two10 at the end of my arm, but I got out in the end. Warning: Don't stick your hand in there! Conclusion: Someone much cleverer than me has made this.
That's all great, but...how does it work? It's not a port as such? Or it's a smaller port, which then increases back pressure on the drivers as they excurse?
Alex says it's not a port, but the 'port' still has air coming out of it. And if you look into the 'port' there are... shenanigans. I have NO idea how it works - I'm assuming it's all in the MAFFS, at which I am useless. What I do know is, the Two10 will take a whole frigging shedful of LOW without any apparent complaint whatsoever, but still has clarity and good definition. It comes on more like a 2X12 or a 4X10 - and then some. I'm really looking forward to gigging it on Sunday - it's an outdoor venue, so it'll be a good test.
