It just struck me that I could quite happily downsize to two basses and be totally happy. Anyone done similar? And how do you choose?
I know this is heresy, but you can be totally happy with ONE bass. I had just one bass from 1976 right up until I joined this forum six years ago and was perfectly content. Then of course everything went completely crazy apeshit bananas hat-stand. If you select 'the one bass' that will do everything you need - and stay off the internet, you'll be fine.

Blimey, a minute isn't long is it?? Oh well. Now to put the kettle on - as per instructions in OP. https://soundcloud.c...9702/noodlecomp

Privileged to have visited John's man-cave today to try a number of his excellent basses, chat about all things bass and get some lovely CTS Pots, Switchcraft Jack, vintage wiring and a rare Sprague Pacer cap fitted to my Road Worn P bass, which is now 100% reliable and sounds great. Another fantastic job of work. Always good to get down to the coast and meet up with John, who is an all-round great bloke. Thanks in particular for the Sprague Pacer John, I know you haven't got many left!
...we had a guitarist who when tuning up would get bored half way though and just say "ah well it's close enough for jazz" ...
That's usually not close enough.
I just hope he's better at bass than he is guitar.
He won't be. Sounds like you're better off out of that one.

The original rock guitarist. RIP.
Don't diss drummers...
Oh yes, I've played with one or two who were reliable, they're not all bad of course. I didn't think the OP was being entirely serious. Apologies if I've misread the mood. Again.
Actually, just remembered, that's FOUR drummers I've been out with.
Do you use the rhythm method? Arf, arf. *Sigh*
-
Well that's something of a sweeping statement. However, I must agree with you. There's always something a bit 'wrong' about them somehow. Of course the worst thing is when they can't actually play the drums properly, but I've been in bands with one or two that have had some very funny habits and/or obvious mental or personality disorders... Mind you, guitarists and vocalist are a bit iffy, too. And don't get me started on keyboard players... Edit: Drummers who have decided to become members of this board are perfect in every way, of course.
I just checked the Glastonbury history and it turns out it was 1987 I was there as well.
HD probably off my radar at that time. I went to see Elvis Costello and the Attractions, who were excellent.
To have to change the eq for volume reasons is a bit crazy.
Mmm... maybe not. The tone you want isn't necessarily the best tone for the band. The tone I prefer when playing solo would be totally unsuitable within my band. Getting a good sound is always a compromise and everyone in the band has to compromise too, or it won't work. I'm mainly pointing at guitarists who won't turn down and who won't cut the bottom end from their EQ.

Have ordered all the bits and bobs I need... going to sand the neck to a smooth, satiny finish then apply a few coats of Tru-Oil as per the destructions. Apparently this will preserve both the neck and the silky feel - if I do it right. I'll post pics when it's done.
My last visit to Glastonbury was 1986, I went specifically to see Husker Du, and I'm glad to say I did. My most enduring memory is the sh*t I had when I got home, having held it in for 3 days because I couldn't face the festival bogs, a trench with a row of cubicles over it and a hole in a wooden board to sit on. Several times I went in, took one look and retreated, refusing to have anything to do with the foulness I beheld. So when I left I decided to hold on a bit longer until I reached my own toilet rather than stop on the motorway-it was 'hello Mum, hello Dad, see you in half an hour!' Bliss. Doesn't sound like things have improved much in the last 30 years.
Exactly my experience in 1987 - except for the Husker Du bit, obviously. A friend in our party took a LOT of Immodium to prevent any crapping, but his weekend was spoilt somewhat as he did not feel well for some reason... I did what you did and exercised the power of mind over (fecal) matter.

Can I go next please?

^^ Listen to your Dad. ^^ You can leave loads of headroom if you want to because 'signal to noise' is essentially a moot point now. There IS no noise. You don't need to get anywhere near 0db when tracking. I play direct into my interface and if compression is needed later to fit something into a mix, or just to make it sound good, I'll do it within the DAW when mixing.
I'm in trouble. I've downloaded a pic of the pink Jazz and it's now my wallpaper
Oh dear. Will the Wigan bass-shop be open for business again soon, then??
PJ Harvey was quite good; her usual kooky eclectic self. Good backing band too.
I though PJ Harvey was bloody brilliant. Great songs, great performance, totally original, absolutely engaging. Really unusual instrumentation and line-up, they really don't sound like anyone else. Some of the lyrics very prescient given the current political situation, too...

Probably in the minority, but I don't think Adele is the world's greatest singer. She's certainly well-marketed though. I found her girl-next-door/woman-of-the-people shtick a bit tedious, too. But hey, what do I know?

As said, get another SC for more beans. Having said that, if you need more than 300W through an 8ohm cab for bass at a rehearsal, then your band must have serious 'volume war' problems. Get everyone to turn down. I hope you're using ear protection, too.
I've got a friend who's really into Wolf Alice. The first time I heard her mention them I thought she said she was going to see Rolf Harris.

Yesterday, I saw a toilet with a turd on the seat, with an apprehensive cockroach sat next to it. It was quite unnerving.
Had a similar experience in the toilets of a motorway service station - most of the stalls were occupied and I was desperate, so when I spotted a vacant trap I scampered in, only to find a truly enormous turd on the seat - with a union jack stuck in it at a jaunty angle. Just about summed up my feelings about the United Kingdom at the time. Which haven't changed, by the way.
Be VERY careful what you wish for
I bet there are more than a few people thinking THAT today.

Rubbish! Where's the brass bridge earthing strip? The headstock is too pale, too. Seriously though, if it's the Jazz equivalent of my RW P Bass then Fender are onto a winner. I think I'd rather have the fiesta red/tort/rosewood VVT version though - just to match my P.
