Have we all become wimps or is it a sign of an ageing population
Also, ever noticed that an awful lot of pro players with road crew still favour heavy valve/ big cab rigs? Just sayin...
Well you're not going to spend good money just to make life easier for the staff, are you? Stands to reason... -
I'm saying I agree with a previous post that BC isn't a factor in a lot of (bass) people I know and in a lot of ways, IMO, not so relevant in the bass world.
That's interesting. So by that logic do you think it's only Basschat members who are interested in buying lightweight equipment? And therefore companies who make and sell such gear largely rely on Basschat members to keep them afloat? -
Weight isn't really a factor for a lot of bass players and they've never heard of BC.
1. How do you know weight isn't a factor for a lot of bass players? 2. How do you know a lot of bass players have never heard of BC? 3. Even if 1. and 2. are true, what possible bearing would it have on this thread? -
Did i mention the Panda skin headlining
Obviously it can't be real Panda skin, so you do the right thing yet still remain fashionable. Nice! -
I have people to do that and I can honestly say I never asked how many MPG my car does to the gallon befoe buying it, though I do know it has 12 cylinders two turbo chargers and is limited to 200mph :-)
As long as it has a limiter it must be environmentally sound, so that's all right, then. -
Isn't this thread similar in nature to one on a petrol-heads' site bemoaning that some folk want to know the MPG before they buy a car?
I'd want to know the fuel consumption of a car before I bought it! Though TV car adverts never tell you that or indeed give any specifications at all. They seem to major on the fact that their cars are good for driving in remote mountain areas where you never see another vehicle from one month to the next and are never involved in a traffic jam. Or that the car is suitable for young people because it's available in primary colours. You'd almost imagine people buy cars on a whim without thinking, wouldn't you? -
Sorry but it's sold.
What a shame! (Relieved).
I can't comment on the 70s but for me and I think many others, especially Londoners it's not so much about the weight but about size, and the availability of space. Not just at home, but in our cars, in our cities and in the places we play. I've downsized everything.
+1 Even some of the better-known London venues are surprisingly cramped, have small stages and no dressing room, nothing. Frequently there isn't even enough room to put down a hard case and open it. Which is why I use a gig bag. -
That was a (highly modified...) Guild, I think...
Modified by Alembic if I remember rightly. But it's got the look...
They do turn up occasionally...
Ah no, it's for sale too! Instant GAS!

How about a sunburst one..? Y'know, like Jack used to play.
One thing that occurred to me is that it's harder to drive and park in cities than it would have been 40 years ago - there are more vehicles on the road and parking is heavily regulated.
A very good point, and the main reason why I'm always downsizing. I'm currently doing lots of London gigs and it's pretty much impossible to park anywhere near a venue, even in the evenings or at weekends. Even on the rare occasion that it is possible, the load-in will be up or down flights of stairs, or difficult in some other way. Being able to walk a fair distance with bass in one hand and rig in the other and set up in less than a minute is a Godsend for me. If I was still using the gear I was using 30 years ago gigging would be impossible.
The guys at Bergantino and Barefaced are now producing cabs that sound far better than any cab I used in the previous 40 years and you can lift them without a hoist. Believe me it's a great time to be bass player, especially an old one!!
+1 It's not just that lightweight cabs are 'good considering their size', they're good by any standard! -
*WITHDRAWN* Lakland Bob Glaub (44-64) White/Maple Lakland Bob Glaub (now known as the 44-64) Skyline Series 4-string P Bass in white with maple neck, pearl guard and matching headstock. Crafted In Korea in 2008. Hipshot tuners. Lakland top loading or through-body bridge. 9lb 2oz. Bought new from Bass Central in Florida around 2009. I bought it recently from this very parish and though the nut width is good for me (1.75"/44.45mm according to Lakland's website, 43/44mm according to me), the distance from front to back is a little too narrow. So very lovely though it undoubtedly is, I know it will be passed over in favour of my Limelight P - a great shame, especially as it's such a looker. It was refinished by Dave Wilson and the headstock was refinished to match. He also made the pearl pick guard. Apparently white is not a colour option for the Skyline Version, so this particular bass is unique. It's in very good cosmetic condition. There is one small ding on the side of the body under the controls, and another on the headstock under the decal (see pics). You have to get close to see either and of course they don't affect the sound or playability of the bass in any way. It's very resonant acoustically and has lots of natural low-end. Luckily it sounds good through an amp too... more P-Bass than a P bass, in my opinion. It thumps well and does that low-mid thing to perfection. It's strung with Fender flats. I'm after what I paid - £500 Posted to mainland UK. I'm NOT looking for trades, thanks. Payment via bank transfer ONLY, please. Bass will be well-packed in a TGI Extreme padded gig bag and despatched via an appropriate tracked and insured method. I will PM an ETA and tracking information to the buyer. The package will need to be signed for. My feedback is here. I thank you!
So old bad, new good? Guess that's why a Stradivarius is next to worthless, why a 1952 Precision is unsaelable, why vintage Aston Martins sit unwanted in damp garages and no one drinks anything other then Beaujolais Nouveau. As for those old valves, don't even start...
A Stradivarius weighs the same as a modern violin. A 52 P-Bass weighs the same as a modern P-Bass. You get my drift. It's not about age, it's about practicality. If you do a lot of gigs and you're hauling your own gear, a hefty rig becomes a pain in the arse really quick, regardless of whether it was made in the 70s or last week! -
Thank you - much appreciated.
Youuuu're welcome. I don't think you'd be disappointed with a One10. In my opinion, of course.

Very nice. I think Parchment would be a good guard colour. 100% white may be a bit too bright.
I borrowed a Heritage Audio 500 series channel strip as the line input to the Puma 900 then into the One10, looks totally over the top, but sounds wonderful. The preamp and amp are practically as big as the cabinet!! Will take some pics and post when I get back to Edinburgh..
Please do, I'd like to see that!

Bought Karl's very lovely white Lakland 44-64. Karl is master of packaging - nearly as good as I am! Very, very smooth deal - Karl has been the model seller as always and communications were second to none. Delivery, ETA and tracking information were supplied so I was able to play 'check the tracking' - Basschat's favourite pastime... Karl is a pillar of this forum and I would have no hesitation in dealing with him again.
The BDI21 is great. Also the DC9 Compressor is pretty good...
+1 for both. The DC9 is also recommended by Ovnilab as 'very good for the price'. I think the last one I bought was £18. Works well.

I need another GK MB500 Fusion in my life. The mid-EQ facilites on that amp are second to none. It can do all the G-K stuff of course, but as you're finding it can do a lot more besides, including a rather good large-valve-amp impersonation. Huge, huge sound.

It matters not. I don't have any party pieces anyway - as far as I'm concerned the electric bass guitar is not a solo instrument. How many notes per second you can play as you blaze up and down the fretboard is irrelevant to me - I'd be more impressed to hear you play in time with a good drummer in a good band and lay down a great groove with a nice feel. It's about teamwork, note choice, space, time and playing for the song. Whether you have a high-end bass or not is irrelevant.
I was asking how exactly would one describe it as (sounding) different to a good 110 cab?, what is gained?, what is lost?.
The main difference from my point of view? You gain volume and bottom end. That's what you really notice first. As far as losing anything goes, I can't think of one advantage a standard 110 cab would have over a One10. The (admittedly few) 110 cabs I've had experience with ran out of steam fairly quickly as the volume went up. But even at reasonable levels they sounded boxy and didn't have much low-end happening. Which is what you'd expect, really. I've stopped thinking about the One10 as I would a 110 cab. Probably best to hear one - it's notoriously difficult to explain exactly in words what a cab sounds like especially if you take into consideration other parameters such as which bass, which pickups, which amp etc is used, what kind of band you play in, what kind of gigs you do, what your rehearsal room is like, and on and on.
