Is the market for older instruments in decline?
discreet replied to karlfer's topic in General Discussion
In answer to the OP, I'd say not. Andy Baxter deals pretty much exclusively in vintage instruments and you only have to look at what has sold and the new arrivals on his website to see the market is buoyant. He's at the retail price end of things and charges top dollar. You can see the added value from the point of view of the buyer though - there are a lot of instruments in one location, you know they are going to be original and genuine, described accurately and truthfully and will be properly set-up and ready to go. Talking of readies, if I had any I'd set up camp in his showroom and never come out... http://andybaxterbass.com/guitars.php?pc=1&cat=1 -
There is an interesting set of YouTube Videos, if you want to get a feel for the place.
Thanks for that. There are also some vids of Sun Studio in Memphis... maybe it's just me but I can definitely see some similarities... I didn't know Mark Kermode played bass! Every day's a school day.
Incidentally, and for what it's worth, I was more interested in her playing and singing than in wondering about her underwear.
Also incidentally and for what it's worth, I didn't mention her underwear.
I spent about 2 seconds looking at the instrument and the rest looking at her. I appreciate that's an objectification of women, and I apologise for that it I couldn't help myself.
I was wondering about the apparent lack of a G-string.
Pat Rayford is an excellent musician and has fronted some great bands. If he dont get you sounding good its time to give up!
We're hoping to sound reasonably good before we get there, but I'm quite sure he will improve matters. Thanks for the comment.

We don't have a drummer, so that's got to help. But ultimately I'd need something modular that I could add to if I ever get involved in a louder project in future, which is always a possibility.
The added bonus i forgot to mention is that the combo is small, and I managed to fit it between the keys stand and the hi hat pedal
This is the whole reason for the OP as my current band is relatively quiet, we are a five-piece and the crap end of the London pub and club scene has some very tight stages. I'm using a Rumble 500 Combo, which is hardly big or heavy, but it can be unwieldy. It does have the advantage of doubling as a seat if we're particularly up against it space-wise. But generally I'd like something smaller and lighter without sacrificing power and tone.

Nicely done, and congratulations on the best member name I've seen for some time.

Maybe buy an acoustic bass for home noodling, or something..? I know how it is though, sometimes I feel like jacking it all in and becoming a goat farmer in Venezuela.

Sugar Ray's Vintage Recording Studio We'll be recording here in the not-too-distant future. Really looking forward to it. My current project is a retro country band covering songs in various sub-genres from the 1920s onwards, so Sugar Ray's live recording method (in mono!) should be just the ticket for maximum authenticity... I will of course post the results in the fullness of time. http://sugarraysvintagerecordings.co.uk/the-studio/
Just to report that I've done my first gig with my PJB Briefcase...
Very useful, thanks for that. Did a gig last night with a band whose upright player used an Acoustic Energy amp with a Berg 1X12, and that sounded very good. Not a combo of course, but still... great sound.

Looks like it may be useful for 'the rhythm method'. :blilnk:
...mushes it all up and loses definition.
This, generally, But I know what you mean about dead rooms. Trouble is, if you apply an artificial 'room' to live bass and nothing else, it just sounds unnatural. Which may be what you're trying to achieve, in which case go for it. I've spent years trying to get my sound as clean and as dry as possible, which works well in the context of a live band so I wouldn't consider it, but of course your mileage may vary and so on.
And of course the really sad part is that even if you DO manage to get enough work playing the cool stuff, sooner or later either you or the punters will get fed up with it and you are back to square one.
I think some folk get a bit funny as they use a different brand of cab.
You mean that if someone chooses a cab and thinks it's the business, then any other brand of cab should therefore be criticised? That would be totally illogical and surely cannot be the case! I don't think other bass guitar brands are terrible because I choose a Fender (for example)... it's a personal, subjective choice. And of course budget can have a lot to do with it. Obviously I like BF cabs, but over the years I've also gigged and enjoyed Schroeder, Markbass, Ampeg, Eden, Orange, Gallien-Krueger, Marshall... I'm currently very happy with my Rumble combo (which allegedly has Eminence drivers)... I really like the BFM J12 I built and fitted with a Kappalite 3012HO... I've heard lots of other cab brands I like including Berg, Aguilar, GENZ (RIP)... yes, Ashdown... even Behringer. I don't think I've ever heard a cab I genuinely disliked, apart from a WEM cab I had in the late 70s... which wasn't that great... or maybe I just wasn't that great at playing back then...

I've never encountered an EA cab so would be interested to read a comparison too. I know the Wizzy has love on this forum, though.
