1. I can almost understand putting together a tribute band based on very famous and successful bands, but for lesser-known or niche tributes... where is the work? Or is the joy in the challenge and/or the obscurity factor, or what?
  2.
I'm in a 3 piece Hawkwind tribute band.....I'm like a fat Lemmy
You're also like a living Lemmy. Sorry, too soon?
  3. Great review Dan and I can only second everything you've said. I've been buying my leads and cables from Dave for years - given the quality of materials and components, skill and experience in assembly, superlative value and the kind of customer service others can only aspire to, why would I (or anyone else) do otherwise? I've NEVER had ONE single problem with ANY of Dave's products. It's a ten from me too, no question.
  4.
There's loads of great music out there. Great bands, great sounds, people that look amazing performing and massive bodies of work. And my contribution to this is... well, nothing really. And sometimes it makes me feel really insignificant and the output of other artists is quite intimidating really.
I used to feel like that in the 70s back when there were far fewer bands and way less recorded material available. If you're always comparing yourself to others you'll never get anywhere. Forget 'em and concentrate on what you're doing. How do you eat an elephant? One small piece at a time. As to playing music you're not sure about, I joined a band recently on a whim and suddenly I'm doing way more gigs than I've ever done in my entire career and I'm having a really great time doing them. It's not a genre I would have chosen and not a genre ever I listen to given the choice, but the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages, so I don't care! And (whisper it)... I'm getting paid, too.
  5. Another disappointing thread title...
Just Google 'fingering' and you'll find some interesting stuff!
Quite.
  6. Or you could buy my modded PB-50 which plays very nicely and sounds great! Then fit your new pup into it! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/282176-price-drop-hb-pb-50-54-p-bass-ri-l120-posted-audio/
  7.
Bass arrived, played it a bit. It was ok-ish, but somehow I didn't take to the feel, so I sent it back.
Did you fit flatwounds? Even though the stock strings are D'Addario, they're pretty terrible in my opinion and the one thing the PB-50 really needs is to be fitted with decent flats. This difference is like night and day, and improves the playability enormously. I think the D'Addarios fitted to cheap basses as stock is a marketing ploy. These strings just don't seem to be as good as the D'Addarios you buy yourself... my opinion, of course. I'll have that hand-wound pickup from you if you want to sell it!
  8. It may not get this far east (London) but will keep an eye out on my travels anyway. Here's hoping for a good outcome.

    obbm's feedback

Put an ad in wanted for a bass bridge and Dave very quickly came up with the goods and posted it out tout-suite. Nothing I can say that hasn't already been said in this thread! Another smooth, easy transaction. Thanks, Dave.
  10.
Jono wouldn't have approved of that... He only likes Bach. And when in lighter mood, Offenbach.
Presumably his Bach is worse than his Beethoven.
  11.
I've learnt to hold my nerve with flatwounds. They rarely sound perfect out of the packet. Best to wait a couple of months at least from a sound point of view
That is true, but I've found La Bellas and Fender 9050ML sound great from the off and just continue to improve. YMMV of course.
  12.
...Its not real tort anymore...
It never was real tort - it was celluloid (cellulose nitrate). You can still buy celluloid guards but they're not cheap.
  13. The last few sets of strings I got from Status were deader than corduroy. When I complained about them and tried to send them back for a refund or a replacement, I got a few emails initially, then it all went quiet and I was completely ignored. Not great.
  14.
I subscribed to She Shreds. Received a copy in January - great! Nothing since then. I'm beginning to wonder if they've gone out of business.
She Shreds, seashell, by the sea shore. Ha, ha! I wouldn't even say Carol Kaye was much of a shaper - she was a session musician - but she certainly played on so many really huge hits from so many big artists in the 60s and 70s that she almost single-handedly introduced the signature sound of the pick-played Precision Bass to millions of people... even if they didn't know what it was at the time.
  15.
The best available option is the one you've already got.
+1. You really can't beat white, black and maple.
  16. Met Jim this evening and gave him some bits of paper in exchange for two lovely Fender SKB cases. A very concise and smooth transaction - recommended! Thanks, Jim.
  17. Vintage white, gold anodized and maple...
  18. *SOLD* HB PB-50 P Bass
  19. Sorry, can't keep up this pretence any longer... I'll be in a W-reg Toyota Corolla GLS and, as I will have had baked beans for breakfast (straight out of the tin) I'll be blowing off in my dirty trousers. Still, we'll have a good time - I'll bring a 4-pack of Special Brew.
  20.
good for cricket
Owzat!!
  21.
Don't worry about that, let me know if you're free and I'll send the helicopter...
Ooh no, way too showy in these times of austerity... I only use mine at night. Don't forget, 'we're all in this together'...
  22.
no worries... it's happening at 1pm if you've made your millions by lunchtime and find yourself with the afternoon off...
Ooh well, that's a possibility... I'll make sure there's a limo available just in case...
