Bass guitars are just tools, nothing more. They undergo wear when used. But nevertheless they do last a long time... instruments from the early 50s are still doing the rounds. No time at all compared with high-end orchestral instruments of course and I often wonder if electric basses will last for hundreds of years too. No reason why not, really. Also dings and dents can be repaired, electrics replaced, bodies refinished, necks refretted... that was the whole ethos of Leo Fender, he built things so that they could be made cheaply and repaired easily. Could to with a bit more of that kind of thinking in this 'throw it away, it's old' society.

They are very useful indeed but should be used with discretion, especially the VPF and especially live. The VLE (Vintage Loudspeaker Emulator) gradually rolls off a wider and wider range of top-end for a more old-skool sound, while the VPF (Variable Pre-Shape Filter) will progressively Boost lows and highs, in effect giving you a mid-scooped sound. Though this makes the amp sound very nice when playing solo or at home, you definitely don't want to be scooping your mids in a live situation as you will not be heard. It's important to note that both controls are only in the 'OFF' position when fully LEFT, and not at 12 o'clock. They are a major selling point of Markbass amps. When I had a Markbass, I set the EQ controls flat and got all the sounds I needed using only the VLE and VPF filters. You can get an amazing combination of tones just by using the filters and nothing else.

I went for an audition last week which turned out to be at a small terraced house in a densely-populated urban area. The rehearsal room was a large shed at the bottom of a short garden. There was some rudimentary soundproofing. The band have been playing there weekly for about a year and have yet to receive a single complaint. I will say it's a country band... might well be a different story were it any flavour of rock band. So you could be OK.

The resulting audio file was then imported into FL Studio 11 where I was able to 'stereoize' it a bit, add some subtle FX and master it using PSP VintageWarmer II. Or to put it another way, I messed about with it.
