...I've been gassing for an 80's Siennaburst for ages, even though I can't live with 1.75" necks, and that one seems a very good price!
Ah, you will now. Start the year as you mean to go on...
I'm not sure about this guy. He's trying to sell a Ric on his site with a bolt-on neck!
Hunh..? What's a 'Ric'? This is a P-Bass thread! -
...miles away from Bass Collection's...
Not the world's best logo - in my humble opinion, of course. Good basses though by all accounts. -
...I wonder if a 'I do not apply Fender decals' notice will appear on the website soon? Amazing though and hope it plays as well as it looks!
I believe he is going to unveil his own logo in the near future. The bass plays (and sounds) as good as it looks for sure, thanks. -
I watched. Not overly impressed. Enjoyed seeing Weller. Peculiar bass choice from Mr Swift? An old Ibanez?
Ibanez Musician MC-924 in polar white, I believe. Lovely-sounding bass. I want one.
Mark - what is the backing track on that rather tasty sound bite, please?
https://youtu.be/EnnEMd_VmgI Obviously I edited it and, er... 'produced' it somewhat. -
Anyone else had this realisation about taking an instrument for granted? Or are you all less conservative than me?
No. I sold my 76P Bass thinking that a P bass is just a P bass and I could get another any time... but it ain't so. I missed it, and no other P seemed to do the trick for me; so five years later and a huge effort to get the cash together, I finally got it back and am very glad I did so. 70s Fenders are not much of a muchness and differ wildly in weight and quality!
I meant when used as a verb, not when it is a noun. So 'reliced' or 'relicing'. Ugly words. Looks like someone took away the lice then put them back again.
That's just what I thought. I think it needs a 'k' in it (relicking) but this makes it seem medieval. Maybe that's about right. I've taken to using 'relic job' to avoid the issue, but we do need a better verb. -
TI Jazz Flatwounds vs Labella 760fx tension
discreet replied to markdavid's topic in Accessories and Misc
Jack, I appreciate you're playing two different basses, but was that with the same amp/cab volume settings? I've found that though you need to have a light touch with the TIs, they are in fact LOUD and have quite a lot of harmonic overtones and the like - for flats. I'm going to try the TI Jazz roundwounds too, when I've sold the house. -
Well, there are a lot of technical reasons why you guys are getting poor bb down in the South West but it's mostly to do with being too close to the edge of the world.
What do you expect? They've only had electricity since 2014. They still buy Tremeloes records. -

NBD - Limelight Dakota Red Precision Bass, 1963 *Audio* I am now the proud owner of this Limelight Dakota Red Precision Bass. It is (as far as possible) period correct and closely resembles a 1962/63 Custom-Colour Slab-Board Fender Precision Bass. Needless to say I am a very happy bunny. Now read on... No FX, 3/1 compression. This bass is light (8.6lbs), resonant and balances well on the strap. Though essentially brand new, it nevertheless feels well played-in and very comfortable - the relic work has been sensitively executed and is lightly finished. I've played a few pre-CBS Fenders in my time and this bass comes remarkably close in feel, playability, sound, weight and appearance. I really have no idea how Limelight achieve this, but it's a neat trick. One or two of Mark's earlier instruments were criticised by some for sporting a too-heavy relic job - and while this may perhaps have been so, his current cosmetic work is very accomplished indeed in my view. Not all 50-year-old basses have been gigged in a sweaty club every night or taken on gruelling world tours to be battered relentlessly... So if you have ever suffered GAS for an early Fender (who hasn't?), but couldn't justify the cost, or (as in my case), simply couldn't afford one, then in my opinion this is as close as you'll get anywhere - and at a fraction of the price of a genuine vintage instrument. However, if you're lucky enough to own a vintage Fender but don't feel happy about taking it out of the house, then it may be an idea to have it recreated... keep one as a collector's investment piece, have the other as a player... why not? But whichever way you play it, it seems Limelight are really coming into their own now and Mark is approaching the height of his powers. So I'll stop rambling and let the pictures (and the sound clip) do the talking... PS: Yes, I know my pickup cover isn't period-correct. As it's amateur night I'm definitely staying in and I'm not drinking, either. Got a new bass today, so I'm not bothered!

We're so addicted to the internet... you don't need to blow people up or murder them with guns - a determined DoS attack that made the internet unusable for more than about a week or so would see millions of people commit suicide rather than go without their online fix. -
But that’s a slippery slope, discreet. Given the enormous amount of crossover between covers bands, if we all tried to be absolutely faithful wouldn’t we all just end up sounding the same as each other?
I'm quite sure that audiences rate covers bands on how recognisable the songs are and how enthusiastic the performance is, nothing more. You're just 'the band', you're never 'that band'. They have come to hear other people's music.
-
Not the most enthusiastic audience I've played to.

Fantastic! Did it all kick off when they released the balloons..? -
At the end of one of our gigs someone told us it was just like listening to the originals. Meant as a compliment I’m sure, but a disaster as far as I was concerned. You have to make songs your own.
Absolutely disagree, and another good reason why I don't like playing covers. Overlaps with the 'that'll do' problem... I'm not suggesting you should try to recreate the production values of the recordings, that is almost impossible, but you should at least play the same chords, the same arrangement and the same parts with the same feel and at the same tempo. It seems that a fair few people are unable or unwilling to do this. If you're going to put the audience's pleasure before your own then I think it's your duty to perform the songs as closely as is humanly possible to the versions that everyone has in their heads. Too often 'we do our own version' is code for 'we can't be bothered to learn it properly'. IMHO, of course.
...That anyone would consider knocking back the chance of playing with a live band just because they dont like 2 of the songs on a setlist is beyond belief.
It's like anything else, really. If you've been playing in bands for a long time I can see that you might just reach the end of the line with particular songs. Some songs I find so offensive that I imagine they've been written and recorded deliberately to antagonise me.
...An unprofessional, that will be good enough, we don't bother with that bit, half-arsed attitude to working at rehearsals will make me run away.
Yes - see also 'not working when not rehearsing', i.e. trying to quickly learn songs at rehearsal or winging it. The 'I didn't get time to learn it, my computer failed, my guitar (for it is a guitarist) broke, my dog died, my girl left me and my cock fell off with a clang' brigade. Bah! It's a beautiful thing when everyone's on the same page, have listened to the proper source material, have learnt the song and then play it correctly all the way through first time off at the next rehearsal. Happens all too rarely for my liking - another reason why I try not to be in a covers band.
-
...I’d never join a band and then refuse to play certain numbers... ...the first step is seeing the set list, way before audition. That gives me a feel for their typical material – not just what’s there, but the potential likelihood of adding no-no songs later.
Very sensible. Seeing the set list is essential really. If there's a m***er, you can choose to end it there or, if it's just one or two numbers decide whether you want to suck it up if the situation is otherwise a good one. Edit: What, you can't say m***er on this forum? Mad!
