Sorry for the 3-month delay, folks! Here's Andy's fine work on the finished and reassembled bass. Despite my efforts to ruin a perfectly good rare and valuable vintage instrument, Andy was able to bring it back from the brink. In fact it's better than it was when I first got it. Thanks, Andy! This is such a great bass. Playing it again makes me realise just how good these Hayman/Shergold necks are and has done no favours for my increasingly insistent Shergold Marathon GAS...
...I must admit I wasn't that keen on gree/tort combination on instruments I'd seen online, but when I got it on, it looks a a real belter in the flesh.
Well as WoT says, it's a beautiful bass whichever way you look at it. I think mint or parchment would go well with seafoam. But of course you'd need to realistically relic the guard. More work, more work!
...I've also worked on some quite heavy ageing. Now I know this isn't to everyone's taste, and I've seen some pretty strong exchange of feeling on this online - the hilarious futility of arguing that someone's taste is somehow 'wrong'. But the fact is the rest of the bass is heavily worn, making a new finish look a bit odd and inconsistent with the playing wear it exhibits. But more importantly, I like the look, and as it's my bass, that's what really matters. I know some of you will think I'm nuts for doing it.
Not at all... but I do think you're nuts for choosing seafoam green with tort. But hey, no-one's taste is 'wrong', you like it, it's your bass and that's what really matters. Oh wait, you said that. Seriously though, great job.
...sounds like its just a matter of waiting for it to go pop again...
Yes. And looking at the timeline that is likely to be sooner rather than later, unfortunately. Maybe have a close look at consumer protection law and see what can be done.

Had one of these for a while and put an Audere pre in it. Sounded lovely and played very well. Only moved it on because it turned out five strings are not for me. I had no issues with the tuners however, which performed as you would expect. Similarly the pickups which seemed fine to me. I didn't think it necessary to upgrade them. I only fitted the pre as I already had it. Lush, but this bass works well in its stock form. In my humble opinion of course.

The bodged acoustic guitar bridge actually made me feel sick. People are terrible. That is all.

Sorry to hear this. I was looking at a 7pro as the spec seemed perfect but there is just so much negative feedback regarding it. I contacted Ampeg about it and they told me the issues had been resolved. Obviously they have not. It's difficult to trust gear that has failed and been repaired. It's always at the back of your mind that it could let you down again, possibly at a very awkward and embarrassing time. Either you need to get it fixed yet again and carry a decent back-up, or cut your losses. I think I'd get rid of it and move on.

I'll bung this in for the hell of it. £246. http://www.thomann.de/gb/fender_sq_vm_precision_bass_pj_3ts.htm

Barefaced make some very small (yet powerful) cabs. I don't currently own one, before I get accused of fanboi-ism.
-
Trying very hard not to get involved, but if my upcoming audition next month (with a band that plays both country AND western) is successful, I'm going to have to think seriously about this bass, which will complement my fringed jacket and rhinestones just perfectly...

It's a guitar.

When presented with other peoples recordings I usually listen to about ten seconds' worth. I listened to both these tracks all the way through, so there you go. Good recordings that need more time spent on them to sound great, but you know that already. Maybe add a bit more air overall in the top end. Love the bass sounds (they'd better be good, really) though if being super-picky I'd say a little more punch wouldn't hurt. But you know that, too. Good playing overall, you've kept a bit of restraint - but I'd go further down that road if possible and deliberately strip it back even more; this will open up the sound and arrangements and make it all much easier to deal with. Less is more for sure. Really good effort though, everyone sounds like they're on it. Look forward to the next.

I always have both controls wide open on a passive P-Bass, so get whatever the pickup has got to give - then I EQ from the amp. A passive tone control is a treble cut, it doesn't 'add' bass, so in effect you're missing something.
I've always had my best luck with an EV RE-20. I also like a Beyer M88, Sure SM-7, Senheisser 421 or, for a more aggressive sound, a good, old-fashioned SM-57. The 421 will bump the low mids nicely on cabinets that tend to sound a little scooped, such as older SWR cabs.
Had some great results with the Senheisser 421. YMMV of course.
...the art of Arranging seems to be vanishing in the pop world. I suppose that is more to do with the way things are recorded these days (possibly)...
Or because the intended consumers can't (or won't) concentrate on anything for more than thirty seconds, so it's become unnecessary.

Ideally, everyone should be good. Ideally...

Had this several times with RS66, changed to RB45. No problems thus far. A quick email to Jason How gets a swift response in the event of a dud string.
