I use parallel compression, about 50/50, and very squishy. I get complimented on my sound every time I play bass (not very often!)
That's not because of the compression though, it's because you're such a tasteful and sensitive player...
I generally turn it off at my head, preferring to just avoid it.
There's your answer. If you find you don't need one, don't use one. I became obsessed by compression and got through some very expensive bits of kit (dbx, Diamond, Keeley, Empress, Carl Martin, Origin, etc etc) and in the end realised that I really preferred to control my dynamics myself and didn't need a compressor at all. I might use parallel compression when recording, but live the effect of even a high-end comp can be very subtle and is quickly negated by that bloke making a huge racket right next to your earhole, i.e. the drummer. Your mileage may vary.

It has quite a charming patina, actually. But I think I'll go and wash my hands again.

It's been hand-polished!!

I generally buy used and accept that if something goes wrong it's going to cost me. My feeling is that if a piece of used equipment is working, then it's likely to continue to do so. Of course all electrical items have a finite operating period, but it's very difficult to estimate what this might be. I've had a modern, Class-D amp go tits-up on me, and also a 40-year-old hand-wired valve amp (with the original Mullards in it!) which is still going strong today. So it's a lottery. New gear has the warranty and the guarantee, but of course this is no insurance against tits-uppery, a word I have just invented to describe the process of something failing. So whether new or used, you can still find yourself in the middle of a gig with no amp.
For anyone that's interested, I ended up doing a complete u-turn and getting my hands on an Orange Terror Bass.
Let us know how you get on with it. Predictably, I ended up getting my hands on a G-K MB500. It's lush.

I don't have one, but I've played a couple and they're very good quality, sound great and play very nicely. I'd rate them up there with my 76P, no problem. Dave Swift obviously likes them. I think they're highly underrated and should be got while they're still affordable. OK, now I've got early-80s Ibanez GAS.
...a US Jazz bass circa 2001, a Squire JV p bass circa 1983/4 and a Stingray circa 1991...
You probably don't need the Jazz and the Stingray. I'm of the opinion that all you need is one halfway-decent bass - then learn how to play the bloody thing.

Umm... Tech-21 VT Bass.

*SOLD* Elixir 4-String 14102 Nanoweb Nickel-Plated Steel 50-105 Blurb: 'Elixir Nanoweb Bass strings are coated in a unique way to protect wound strings from all contaminants. A flexible, strong, yet micro-thin polymer tube defends the critical zone of tone from invading enemies. Nothing (including the coating) gets between the windings. Elixir strings with the original Nanoweb coating applied sound great 3 to 5 times longer than ordinary strings, have the bright tone & punch of non-coated strings & feel like traditional strings. After experiencing Elixir strings, it's hard to go back to the old way of life.' That's all well and good and I do like the sound, punch and feel of these strings a lot, BUT (and you can call me mad if you like), I prefer my roundwounds to lose some of their 'zing' after a couple of weeks and get down to the proper business of being boingy, yes, but mainly a bit kind of thumpy and chunky... and these Nanoweb do what they say on the tin, i.e. they're still very zingy after a week or two on my P-Bass. Though they've been on a Fender headstock, they have NOT been cut and are entire... so I'm sure they would be good to go on a 2+2 headstock as well. These are getting on for forty quid new - I'm after just £18 posted. So if you like your zing to last as long as possible, you wanted to give these a go but thought they were a little bit pricey, then now's your chance. Drop me a PM, transfer £18 into my bank account and I'll get these in the post to you ASAP. I thank you!

Exchanged some bits of paper for Alan's superb G-K MB500. Very smooth transaction! Wouldn't hesitate to deal with him again.
I'm not sure I could have a bass with 'urine' in its name though
Now you're just taking the plss.

I like the look of it too, but 'Surine' reminds me of 'ursine', i.e. bear-like. Just sayin'. Ooh look, it's time for my meds.
...if it's amazing, why would you want to change it?
This. If it ain't broke, fling it from an upstairs window, that should do it.
+1 to the change hands at 99
More like 9... just sayin'...

I always thought a Watts were like a miles-per-hour rating, i.e. how fast electrons are speeding down the motorway. Or something.

Really like D'Addario Balanced Tension EXL170BT 45-60-80-107. Excellent strings. I'm currently using Elixir Nanoweb 50-105 Nickel Plated Rounds on my P-Bass and I'm liking those a lot, too.
It sounds mellower than my Warwick.

That surprises me!
That surprises me, too. Do you have wildly differing strings on the two basses? I would have expected your new baby to have a completely balls-out tone compared with a Warwick. But then I'm not really au fait with Warwicks, so I'll shut up!

I never fail to be amused by young people who imagine themselves to be intelligent by virtue of the fact they spent a few years at University. Ha, ha, ha! A piece of paper does not impart the secrets of groove or how to be a useful member of a rhythm section.
Does all that make sense?
Yep.
We are sorry to hear that you received a defective unit. Did you contact the dealer to exchange it? We haven't heard of this issue before. If the input jack is loose that's a fairly easy fix but the fan should NOT be on all the time.
That's good to know - thanks for posting.

I'm no expert but I think you may perceive more volume as the Retro will be more efficient?

Did a deal with Mark, all very good indeed. He went totally out of his way to provide a very smooth and trouble-free transaction, despite my boneheaded attempts to make it otherwise. Mark is an upstanding pillar of the BassChat community and I would recommend him highly. Always a pleasure, never a chore and never the slightest hint of a problem!
