So, in the context of this thread...pertinent, IMO.
I would have argued against the notion that Class D are weedy, but I'm not so sure now, having been enjoying a large Class A/B amp recently - which seems to have a lot more slam that the equivalent Class D amp. On the other hand I also used a G-K MB amp the other day which did sound very good indeed and surprised me with its immensity, so I'm not sure exactly where that leaves me.

Sorry if this question has been done to death, but.....
discreet replied to Painy's topic in Amps and Cabs
If I was buying now, I'd probably go for the 210s purely for the reason you mentioned - that of having a driver up at earhole level, so in that sense it would be half an 810 in the way that a 410 is not. On the other hand, I own two Bill Fitzmaurice J12s, which are 1 X 12 each and it's just about the most versatile modular set-up you can get in practical terms - each weighs 18kg and can handle 400W RMS at 8ohms through a Kappalite 3012HO Neo. So one cab for rehearsals and small gigs and both for medium to large venues. With one atop the other there is no problem hearing yourself on stage, believe me. Sounds very good with an all-valve amp. There's something about the sound of two 1 X 12 cabs that you don't seem to get with 10" drivers, though I do like the 'sound' of 10" drivers, if there is such a thing, though we're told there isn't... and the difference between one and two 1 X 12 cabs is really profound and way more than the sum of their parts. However, my solution was to buy a single 4ohm cab loaded with two 10" drivers and one 12" driver. Sweet! In any case, for me the big deal with heavy rigs is not the amp in particular, it's the cab(s) that are usually the problem. So I think a good compromise is to have a chunky amp - which though heavy, is not really very bulky - and one or two lightweight cabs. You don't have to compromise your tone if your lightweight cabs can handle the beans and sound good. -
A lot of people seem to think, just get rid of this guy, but it's not always that easy. Has anyone asked if this guy is maybe a mate as well as a band member? Maybe he owns the van that takes them to gigs or something. The op has stated that he doesn't want to go down this road, so obviously saying dump him, is not an option .
We probably haven't been given all the relevant information, it's true. However, if I were in this band I'd either lobby for a new guitarist OR, if (for whatever reason) that wasn't possible, I'd give serious consideration to leaving myself and finding another band. A bit like the supposed Chinese method for cooking a pig, i.e. take the pig home and set fire to your house. Mmm, roast pork.

For what it's worth, I would opt for Olympic White (surprise!), but a little aged. [edit: beaten to it by Rick!] Vintage White could be a possible. Keeping the guard would be a good idea and I like the notion of gluing the bits together, but a 'new' relic guard from Spitfire would look amazing. He can do them with the early thin black pinstripe too, so very authentic... but best to keep the original item if at all possible.
I'm looking for a diplomatic approach before any of that childish nonsence starts
I don't think it's childish. You say you're semi-pro, but If you were fully pro he'd be out straight away. In fact, he wouldn't have got the gig in the first place. If the rest of the band agree with you then he really should go. It's a pain in the arse auditioning people, but in the end it would be well worth it and you'll wonder why you put up with him for so long.
You would blow the roof off of most small venues with an SVT + 810 if you wanted those power tubes cooking nicely!
That's very true, but an SVT + 8X10 at low volume still sounds a lot better than most rigs. You certainly won't be short of headroom, put it that way.
My feeling would be that the SVTll power stage rescues the Ampeg EQ stage...which I'm not at all fussed about as an EQ section. As in, I wouldn't buy the SVTlll pro or the pre amp for the EQ myself.
I would agree that power stages are generally underrated when it comes to assessing bass tone. A big valve power stage has a lot to do with 'that' Ampeg valve sound and I believe big iron transformers have a lot to do with the perceived slam and heft. Which is why, though SS power stages are thought to be unimportant, I currently prefer Class A/B power stages with large (usually toroidal) transformers in them. Also, I bought an Ampeg SVP 5-valve rack preamp a while back (which I believe is similar to the SVT Pro series preamp and EQ) and used it with a big SS power amp. I couldn't get a single sound out of it that I liked and it had to go.
...you can get some good results by tilting back a smaller can IME though. Every small/medium cab owner should have one of these in their gig bag http://www.amazon.co...d/dp/B000YL952E
I agree about cab-tilting. I have one of these which has served me well and has a footprint smaller than the cab. The problem is, if you tilt the cab to an angle where you can hear it properly then that pretty much precludes putting a heavy amp on top. If there's room you can put it on the floor of course, or under the cab if you use the appropriate stand, but it's not ideal.
I briefly used a Genz Benz 6x10 which isn't a kick in the arse off fridge size wise and I loved it purely for the fact the speakers were at ear level ( more or less)...
I've compromised and have an SVT2 pro with a Barefaced super twin and dare I say... What a sound!
Yes, that'll work. I've had quite serious GAS for a Super Twin lately, but thankfully my 21012L has come up trumps.
I don't think the input on an SVT accepts anything else, does it? I've also been told that they don't work unless you're using flats!
They work very well using flats, but an all-tube SVT on full song through an 8X10 using a P with rounds is a very beautiful experience.

Loving the MIJ 51 Reissue. You shouldn't need to do too much to that. -
Funnily enough, we rehearsed at a place with a SVT-350 (the SS one) and a fridge, and I thought the sound was absolutely dreadful with no depth, all mids, vastly inferior to my own gear using two 1x12s.
It is funny... I did an audition a month or two ago with an SVT350H and an Ampeg 8X10 and it sounded totally amazing. I also did yet another audition where the supplied rig was an SVT350 with an Ampeg 410HLF and that was also totally amazing. In fact, as a direct result of these experiences, I bought an Ampeg SVT350H... so there you go, one man's sparkly diamonds are another man's bucket of spew. No accounting for taste, there's nowt as queer as folk, it would be a dull world if we all liked the same thing, yadda yadda. Edit: You were using a P bass, right..?

I don't get it either. Over-enthusiastic crew, perhaps? I play with a pick half the time but in 40 years I've never, ever dropped a pick or had one slip out of my fingers. Not once! Nevertheless I usually have a spare one on top of my amp or in my shirt pocket. But not a score of 'em ready to go. I use Herco Flex 50 Gold and they just don't wear out. So the only time I need to buy new ones is when I eventually lose 'em all, which generally takes about six or seven years.

If you want a good case with plenty of room for things other than your bass, I can recommend the Protection Racket 7051, which is very competitively priced. I wouldn't want to walk far with it on my back, though. -
I think I prefer Damo era Can to the earlier Malcolm Mooney, but can never be quite sure.
Why would you put the sound difference down to one being MIM & one being MIA? You're comparing a Precision to a Jazz, the P will always be deeper and fuller!
+1 A Precision usually sounds pretty good straight into the desk.
