Is a '63 Precision worth at least twice as much as a '73 ?
discreet replied to JapanAxe's topic in Bass Guitars
...'this seems to meet my requirements' can lead to buyer's regret!
Quite - like those patent leather trousers I bought. Had a nasty rash for weeks. -
Thought I'd add something to this thread as I do like a double P. I added another p/up to a Roadworn I bought, now sold (I really can't remember why; GAS probably), sounded great IIRC.
I can just imagine how that sounded. Looks very businesslike too, imho.

Squier Jazz 'Silver Series' BIN £200
discreet replied to Paul S's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Oh..... I live 5 miles from hook.
...it's just up the road from Line and Sinker. Sorry. -
I've never owned a double P bass (must be the only pickup configuration I haven't) and I really need to sort that out. There is very probably a Westone Thunder II in my future. Or a Balogh Odyssey. So much GAS...
Which I'm about to make worse... the double P config is really excellent. You really do need to experience it. With both sets of pups hammering away you can get some truly monstrous tones while still retaining excellent heft and definition. My Hayman just sounds massive. Eeeh, men were men back in the 70s, I tells ya.

There are bids on it now, so the BIN has gone - it's at £113. 6 days to go, so... I'm guessing he'll get at least his BIN price for it. -
Newbie Question: Vintage vs 'Hi-Fi' sound
discreet replied to Naetharu's topic in General Discussion
I'm not sure which I prefer and the reasons for that preference... Why-Fi

There's a lady down the road whose opinion I would value - MIL-Fi.
These comments have made me curious - Bi-Fi. -
I'd agree, I bought a Harley Benton Stratocaster for £56 just for basic guitar noodling and recording at home (fully expecting it to be crap), and it's very playable, easy to set up, low action, stays in tune and sounds just like a Stratocaster. I was surprised and delighted. It's not going anywhere and I'll never get tempted to move it on because it's not worth anything!
I've just recently realised that as a bassist I had it relatively easy financially!
Quite. Particularly when you look at the cost of even mediocre orchestral instruments. Halfway decent ones are phenomenally expensive.

If it's just for your own benefit, how about a pair of tinted sunglasses?

Is a '63 Precision worth at least twice as much as a '73 ?
discreet replied to JapanAxe's topic in Bass Guitars
Just to be clear, if I was buing a 70s one I'd be looking for a heavy weight (and a maple fret board).
Should be easy enough! One-piece maple neck recommended. -
How about a compromise... 6X10? Nah... Barefaced Big Twin is the way to go. Or a Schroeder cab. Or a Barefaced 6X10. Or indeed a Schroeder 6X10.

I have a 76 P which I love deeply, but I still have GAS for a pre-CBS P. One day I will buy one, but I don't want to bust my ass doing it. Next time I have a chunk of disposable it'll certainly be on the cards, but if I'm going to do it at all, I'd like a 1960 P which is going to be a little pricier than a 63, but there it is.
One of those really heavy growling bastards would be a great addition to my fleet.
My 76 P is 8.5lb - just to be irritating. But it certainly is a growling bastard, no doubt about that. -
Great, now I've got GAS for a Mocker. But if the pup configuration sounds anything like my Hayman..
Justin's a Quaker! He wouldn't do that!
No, he wouldn't. When I met him he came across as a very gentle sort. When he wasn't singing, that is... Mr Apple will tell you the same.
it's supposed to be blue!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Eh?? I thought it was green.
Thank you! I'll PM you tonight. Put the kettle on.
Credit where it's due. I was thinking along broadly similar lines myself. Less is more!
-
It's a very simple design, and not a looker compared to other basses...
I beg to differ, it looks totally fantastic. But now I want the same in vintage white with chrome hardware... Would you mind very much if I was a bit nosy and asked you to PM me a few details? Cost, waiting time, etc? Thanks and congratulations on a really cracking bass. If it plays and sounds as good as it looks then you've got a winner there.
Load of tosh. I was a regular gig-goer from 1974 - 89 (entirely in London) and I never saw any violence of any sort at any gig.
This. I also spent these formative years as a teenage (and older) gig-goer and never once experienced any trouble, anywhere. There was the usual posturing of adolescent males, but it was largely all wind and piss. Just like it is today.

Newbie Question: Vintage vs 'Hi-Fi' sound
Well im going to have to go have a very awkward conversation with the GF then…
Just joshing, of course. Sorry, I'm a bit bumptious today. For some reason. -
im confused, I use both a bitcrusher and a gameboy, which one am i? >.>
Bitcrusher + Gameboy = Gaylord. -

Yes, given the price of the BDI-21 and the fact it has a DI out, it's a no-brainer to keep one in your gigbag as back up regardless of what pedal/pre/amp combination you use.

Squier Jazz 'Silver Series' BIN £200
discreet replied to Paul S's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
The necks on these are quite wide as Jazz basses go at, as I recall, 40mm, so nearly Precision width.
Is that so? Well that changes things... but by the time I've got 200 sovs in me sky rocket it'll be gone for sure.
