How many basses have you bought off the Basschat marketplace?
discreet replied to Highfox's topic in Bass Guitars
No definitely much better on Ebay. Here is great for buying (shhhh dont let the folks who buy on Ebay hear that). But Ebay is king for selling even with the 10% fees. I've been buying and selling gear for longer than I care to remember (mostly synths & electronics not so much basses) and always walk away with a profit/break even on the 'bay.
Horses for courses and all that, and obviously your mileage has varied, but I think referring to various of the BC membership as 'tyre-kickers and timewasters' may be a tad harsh! I've not experienced either on here, but there you go. Opinions are what a forum is all about. -
...much much better via Ebay. Too many dreamers/tyre kickers/timewasters here. I wouldn't recommend selling here.
Way cheaper to sell here. You'll pay 10% final value fee on eBay. That's £30 on one £300 bass. Here you pay £20 for a year and sell as much as you like. I've been buying and selling on here for five years and haven't encountered a single dreamer/tyre-kicker or timewaster... whereas I've had problems with dolts and morons on eBay. Are you confusing BassChat with another forum..? -
I would choose a 4 hour bar gig with an appreciative crowd than the beach/family option (not my scene).
Me too - I wasn't being sarcastic, for a change.
One. When I arrived in the forum in the first place. EDIT: The thread is still there!
Well that was a bargain. Shame the pics are gone. -
Anyone using D'addario XL165 nickel wounds?
discreet replied to bassbiscuits's topic in Bass Guitars
I mailed Jason and he sent me a new set, but they were still rough as a badger's arse, so... in any case I'm going through a period of trying out lots of different types and brands of string after using RS66 for 30-odd years. It's quite a revelation really. -
If you were using RS66 Nickels, the Roto RBs are the exact same string without silk.
Christ, I'm not having much luck in this thread, am I?? I can only tell as I find. The last set of RS66 I had were rough as feck and shredded my fingers (and the E was dead) and I've had a few sets of RB45s over several basses and they've been really great. Coincidence or QC issue? Who knows! -
There's a lot to be said for the stability of graphite necks, this being one of their main advantages. But as has been said, they are really nice to play and remind me somewhat of ebony for some reason... on the other hand I like the organic nature of wood but that's just my preference.

Does someone need to be "qualified" to criticise?
Some people know absolutely nothing about music even though they think they think they know everything.
Trouble is, I suspect this represents the majority of those who 'listen' to (or more accurately 'consume') music. But on the other hand you wouldn't want to restrict music access to those who actually know something about it... would you? -
Great talent, but he comes across as a thoroughly unlikeable man.
So often are the unlikeable also talented. Apparently I'm fairly amiable, so what does that tell you?
I think Mr Indiscreet is trying to pull a fast one here, I'm not sure there is such as a thing as a D'addario XL.
You're probably right - I'm going by the 'XL' tag that came with my new Sire V7 - they are factory-strung with D'Addarios. -

The bearded one speaks the truth. D'Addario EXL are good strings. So are the XL, in my opinion. I was a long-term Roto user as well, but a year or two ago found the quality not as good as it has perhaps should have been. This was with RS66. I'm currently using the Roto RB45s on one of my basses and I like them a lot. -
...there are many, MANY musicians who, as players, are unable to recognise their shortcomings until their attention is drawn to them.
That is so true, and not just in the sphere of music. Everyone's an expert. I blame cable TV.
...the poor players must also, by definition, be poor listeners. Ergo, a good listener who cannot play is a better critic than a player who does not listen.
I've played with so many players who don't (or can't, or won't) listen. Picking up an instrument doesn't automatically qualify you as an authority. -
d'addario balanced tension strings? different?
discreet replied to goonieman's topic in Bass Guitars
...as all the strings are different gauges to what I used to use I would think the tone would also be a bit more even string to string.
Ah, then I misunderstood your post. You're probably right. I found that I had been subconsciously compensating for uneven tension across the strings, it actually takes a while to get used to the fact you don't have to do that any more - and that's when the BTs become easy and natural to play. -
Mission accomplished, Cap'n...

Aye, aw good for me...
Ooh, feedback! I thank you... I'm going to wait until all the entries are in, then have a proper listening marathon - but from what I've heard so far, the standard is very high - again! Should be a very interesting month. Mind you, what is 'scantily-clad-woman-falling-into-city' music..? But that's what I like about this month's picture - plenty of room for manoeuvre, style-wise. Too often I don't enter because the picture choice doesn't really do a lot for me. Or more likely, because I'm too bone-headed to appreciate it...
oh dear... I'll investigate.
Ah, there it is. That AVRI P is lovely to behold. And a much more likely acquisition, for me...
I replied that I'd only be up for it if it was Syd era with an oil wheel light show. No email back yet.
Could be High Hopes, or Is There Anybody Out There..? Sorry. -
d'addario balanced tension strings? different?
discreet replied to goonieman's topic in Bass Guitars
...I don't really hear any overall balance difference (if there is supposed to be one) but the overall feel is really nice...
I think the 'balance' bit is about the 'tension' of the strings, not the sound. Which may be why you like the overall feel. -
Once a month isn't enough action for me. But this time of year when everyone's on holiday it's always frustrating band-wise. Who wants to lie on a beach in the sun with their families when they could be rehearsing or gigging in a humid, oven-like room with sweat running down the walls? Bah!

Just for laughs - worst bass colour ever...? Pics reqd.
discreet replied to goonieman's topic in Bass Guitars
How about this? One of the T-Birds owned in the 70s by Pete Overend Watts (Mott The Hoople). That's what you call a craqueleur finish!! -
Recorded it, going to watch it later. Should be entertaining, by all accounts.

Mid-50s isn't old on here, I can assure you.
