Bollock dropped advice needed on amp/cab mismatch
discreet replied to karlfer's topic in Amps and Cabs
No worries, Karl. You won't be running your Puma flat out or anywhere near it. Your rig will be arse-shatteringly loud way before you get to the point where your drivers will be in any kind of trouble. And I'm sure a bass player of your calibre will know when you're getting there. I had a rig with a 1KW power amp into two 300W-rated cabs - no issues. -
Hopeless live sound - all the gear, no idea.
The point is that the actual wattage value is utterly irrelevant. Its what you do with those watts that count.
Er...
...the size of your amp, does not dictate the volume you will be playing at!
Um...
...there's not much point in carting around a guitar valve amp and running at tickover (unless you only ever play a clean sound).
Good point... and how much headroom do guitarists need? I've worked with a number of guitarists who need to drive their (valve) amps fairly hard to 'get their sound', so if using a large amp they would be excessively loud. Some guitarists get their sound with FX or modelling, in which case amp power doesn't matter and it's down to the (hopefully) good judgement of the individual guitarist. IN MY OPINION, if a guitarist is getting his sound from overdriving his valve amp then generally speaking a 15 or 20W amp will be more than sufficient in most circumstances. I know that if our guitarist turned up with a 100W half stack, questions would be asked... -
'Hybrid' is one way of putting it...

I've been pondering the notion of a Jazz with a Precision neck... but not this one. -
Does someone need to be "qualified" to criticise?
I played with a guy like that for too long. Is he quite happy to tell everyone else what they're doing wrong?
No, but I'd prefer it if he did - at least that would show some kind of engagement - but he learns his drum parts and that's it, he won't change or develop them and doesn't seem to care what anyone else plays. Maybe he's not into it. But he keeps turning up to rehearsals and gigs so I dunno... -
This is my point
Fair enough, but frankly I've rarely encountered a guitarist with a large amp that doesn't abuse its power. Also I've met few guitarists who are sensitive to the needs of the overall sound of a band, whether it be economy of playing, volume, or frequency encroachment. So generally speaking (and from my own experience) I'd say an average guitarist probably needs no more than a 30W amp in most circumstances... this either means that most guitarists are incapable of doing the right thing, OR I've just been unlucky with guitarists, OR I just don't revolve in those circles where the decent guitarists hang out... sorry if this seems arsy or whatever, but I have a fascination with guitarists and their habits, being a guitarist myself in other lives... -
I am in a band with someone that gets angry, chucks his toys out and will blame everything under the sun if you point out a mistake he makes. These are usually the same mistakes that need rectifying for the good of the band, but its not seen that way and he just behaves like a child and has a strop. For me its a sign of a very insecure and immature musician/person and if I had my way I would rather not have him in the band but its not my call.
We have a very insecure and immature drummer/person who really can't take ANY criticism AT ALL and will point blank ignore it entirely. Ideally I'd like to replace him, but he's generally very good and it's so hard to find a decent drummer... come to think of it, it's not the drummer I don't like, it's the person! -
Stop judging people on what the technical spec says and start judging them on what they're actually doing instead.
I've been judging guitarists for a long time and what some of them actually do is use a 100W half stack at a pub gig and have it arse-shatteringly loud 'otherwise I can't get my sound'. In this case a 15W amp would be more appropriate, IMHO. If a guitarist uses a 1000W rig but can get 'his sound' at a reasonable and usable level, then I have no problem with that. -
Well, quite. That's the last time I go for lunch at Alex bloody James' house!
Though you are qualified to criticise his bass playing. -
A couple of other people here France, not BC) agreed with the guitarist.
I'm half French and therefore entitled to be an arse, too. -

I'd be totally qualified to criticise this guy as I also play guitar badly. -
Welcome...
Sometimes the flat sound of the instrument is what works best, unless after a really specific sound.
Plus about a billion. Keeping it simple live is where it's at, IMHO.

I always use a Nationwide Debit Card at Thomann and I don't think I've ever paid any extra charges.
Yes without Squire would be like chips without, er... Fish.

Is that not Marillion you're thinking about?
Oh, ha ha. 'Fish' was Squire's band nickname, as I'm sure you know. Thhp!

NPGD: Jazz bass and Tortoiseshell content
discreet replied to Old Horse Murphy's topic in Bass Guitars
Er... I much prefer the original pg with that colour, sorry! Obviously I'm in the minority, so what do I know? The tort pg itself is a good 'un, however. -
When I think of Yes I think of Chris Squire. 'Twas ever thus, even before I took up bass. Yes without Squire would be like chips without, er... Fish.

Another vote for the GK MB200 - its tiny, but is loud for its spec and sounds great.
Party on everyone. Till you're 29 and then you might as well go home and suck on a werther's original.

...cuz everyone knows what happens to the schwing past 29...
I'm doing a lot more schwinging at 55 than I ever did at 29, so that's just rubbish. Mind you, I AM a late developer. Ooh-ooh! Ah-ah! Shriek! *Makes loud chimpanzee noises - throws faeces at bystanders*
ITYF that the smellchecker is at your end, not BC's. Check what dictionary you have loaded in your browser.
Good grief. All this time... hang on. Yes, you're right! I thought the spellchecker was part of the forum software! I've just changed it to UK in Chrome! Thanks very much for that, it's been driving me bloody mad for years!!
