You're more likely to cause damage by under-driving a cab.
I don't think that's possible. D'oh! Beaten to it by Mr BF. ^
Valve pre and solid state power amp? Cheaper/lighter. Pre is mostly responsible for the tone.
I would respectfully challenge that statement... I believe you need a valve pre and a valve power stage to get the 'all-valve bounce'. I've tried various valve-pre/SS power options over the years and they don't cut it. IMHO, of course.

My last two gigs have been in London venues with poor parking and poorer access so I used the house rigs, which in one case was a small Hiwatt bass combo (which I needn't have bothered with as it couldn't be heard in the room anyway - however I had good monitoring so all was OK) and in the other was a form of Ashdown 4X10 combo (which actually sounded bloody good and I was impressed). But if at all possible I'll use my own gear. What's the point of all the amp and cab GAS and the endless swapping, buying and trading-up to get 'your' sound, otherwise? I know there are people who are quite happy to go FOH and use monitoring (and I can't argue with that as I can easily see the advantages), but if I don't get something approaching 'my' sound on stage I'm not as confident about playing as I'd like to be and that's important. Isn't it?

de afwerking mk4-4++ - blablas has that building itch again
She might have a point.
Most bands I see spend far too long faffing about between songs. One band I was in picked up on this and allowed only a few seconds between songs, no tuning up, no discussions, no standing around looking like you don't know where you are. It's easy to do and makes you look a LOT more professional.

Withdrawn: 1952 Fender Precision Replica Blackguard
discreet replied to Rick's Fine '52's topic in Basses For Sale
I think Discreet has one not unlike this.
No, mine's a 76P. I really must post some pics of it some day... This 52 replica is truly astounding. I don't think I've ever seen relic work as good as this. You'd have to practically get a microscope out to be quite sure this isn't the genuine article. Just incredible! GLWTS! -
Is it really in the fingers and not the bass?
If she can't put any more effort into her heckling than "get on with it" I'd just ignore her.
Ignoring hecklers is usually the best policy. If they're really ruining the gig, you could try focusing the room's attention on them - when they lose their anonymity that's often enough to freak them out into silence. Obviously bands don't like heckers, but audiences don't like them either and will very much be on your side.
It would have made more sense (to me) to 'stereoise' the Modulator Bass, which at least has two pickups.
Of course! The whole concept of the Modulator was that you could fit different modules according to what 70s wacky shenanigans you required. There was a stereo module AND a quad module (!) And several others, including a 'Recording' module... The modules were completely interchangeable across the whole Modulator range and could be shared by basses, six- and twelve-string guitars AND double-necks... wild! The Super-Booster Module was powered by a PP3 battery and must surely be an early active circuit? http://www.shergold.co.uk/modules.html
...Great idea, but there is a lot of bleed through each pickup half. For example, the A string pole pieces sense a good whack of the D string and even the G is detectable. This means you cannot truly isolate each pair of strings without some slop...
There is less bleed from a Marathon pup, the split seems quite well-defined. I don't know if it's something to do with how the pup is wound, or what. The electrics seem a bit nuts, too... given it's a P-type split pickup with one volume and one tone control, I'm not 100% sure why each control has stacked pots and a tropical fish cap... a set for each output jack? There are other electrical shenanigans going on too... far beyond my somewhat limited knowledge. I'm sure I'm missing something, here. Any ideas..? I was going to remove these guts and install a much simpler mono KiOgon P-Bass loom as an upgrade, which would have had 250k pots and a 0.1uF cap, leaving one output jack unconnected... these original pots are apparently 100k and the caps are 0.47uF... however, the bass sounds epic, and as I decided not to refin the body I thought I may as well go the whole hog and leave everything totally original. I have the stock perspex bridge cover, too.
Apparently her favourite line is "Get on with it!" in between songs. Any advice on how to cleverly deal with a heckler?
In this case, practice leaving only a second or two between songs. Otherwise say something obliquely insulting such as, 'Mum, I told you not to come to our gigs any more!'.
I had this with my Markbass amps - the top-end on those being at 10khz. I used a pre-amp pedal to get the frequencies I was after (1khz and 4khz) and it worked fine. But certainly an equaliser will do the job nicely.
Had exactly the same issue with Markbass amps and also used a pre-amp - in this case the excellent BDI-21.

If P Basses can growl, then it can't be burping. It could be grunting. Maybe it's more like blowing chunks. Or possibly some kind of groaning... I think it may be that involuntary noise I make when I get up out of an armchair... 'ahhhh-ohhhh'... Or the current mrs discreet's night-noises, a kind of weird, loud moo-ing, interspersed with a hideous breathing sound like the death-rattle of a homeless. It's difficult to describe sounds in words, isn't it?
