I have a 1 year old boy, but I work in IT.
Well that would explain a lot.

Shergold Meteor Deluxe - Lefty! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shergold-electric-guitar-/131535868383? My first post in the g**t*r section *worried look* but I thought someone of the sinister persuasion may be interested in this Shergold Meteor Deluxe - a fine 70s hand-crafted British vintage guitar, and a lefty, so of no Earthly use to me! I have an eBay search set up to alert me to all things Shergold and Hayman and this popped up.
There are many others I love, but this Precision is the one (ask me next year and we'll see )
I'll ask you next week instead, if that's OK.

Bare Knuckle have a good rep on here, but I haven't used them myself.
I'm just wondering how the bloke from Lord of the Rings became their singer.
D'oh! Five hours too late - was going to say 'Isn't that Aragorn, son of Arathorn on vocals?' ...but you beat me to it. Other news: I'm just happy to have hair and happier it hasn't gone grey yet. I was musing on whether to grow it long one last time... probably the last chance I'll get, but on the other hand doing that may well cause what I've got left to fall out! Young master discreet and myself have a good TV game - when any bald people appear on the screen we both point and shout 'HE'S BALD!', which is actually a lot more fun than it sounds.
I don't think I'll be able to get the money before the auction ends. I will look into it!!
Would be worth making the effort for. They don't come up that often and you won't get better quality. Burman make Ampeg SVTs look like they're made in the far east!

It pretty much depends on whether you have any emotional attachment to the Clover or not. If you do, you will probably regret selling it. If you don't, you will probably still regret selling it... I'd say if you can afford to keep it, then keep it, at least for a bit longer or until you're 100% sure about the Callowhill. You may find that you favour the Clover again when the novelty of the Callowhill wears off, which it's bound to - at least to a certain extent.

I would say that if it is proved conclusively that the material a bass body is made out of has any bearing on the sound that comes out of the output jack, then it is a vanishingly small percentage of the total sound and the 'tone' of a bass guitar is influenced far more by the strings and electronics of that bass, the circumstances under which that bass is played and how that bass is addressed by the player.

Yes, that's the one. I believe the seller is one Mr Foxen, late of this parish, so you'll be getting a properly-serviced and maintained rig. Here's my original NAD on BC - it's not 70kg's worth, by the way - weighing error - more like 35kg. Which is still more than enough, imo! http://basschat.co.u...sl100-powerpak/ His price is pretty strong, but it's worth it to get one you don't have to spend money on - some of them turn up in less-than great condition, which is understandable given their age. But they're hand-wired by Greg Burman himself and you won't get better quality. He was going to use Partridge transformers (considered to be the best) but rejected them and had new ones wound to his own specification. That's the level of quality you're looking at. If I had a spare £550 knocking around right now I'd be on that like a fatty on a Gregg's Steak Bake at a WeightWatcher's meeting. For a slightly easier haul, I'm thinking about maybe sourcing just the power amp part of the deal (the PowerPak) and using something like a VT Bass on the front of it - some of the 'All-Valve Bounce' has to do with the valve power section. But if you're OK with carrying what essentially amounts to two amps, I think it is very worth getting the Burman pre-amp box too.
there is a certain irony in using a Venn diagram to demonstrate someones nerdiness!
Yes! but it would only have been truly nerdy if I had produced it myself instead of copying it from the interweb.
I feel I need new friends
That's it! We don't need new basses - we need new friends! I knew it must be something like that.

I bet Lemmy doesn't have a bass spreadsheet. In fact, I bet he doesn't have a computer.
You may put new strings on when you buy a bass but can you say with confidence when any of your basses were strung and what with? Why wait for it to sound dead when if you know that brand X strings die after 6 months you can replace them at 5.
I've only got three basses so it's not hard. And two of them are strung with La Bella flats, so that's the next 20 years sorted, then. My one bass that is strung with rounds will be getting new strings about every six weeks as I'm experimenting with different rounds. In any case it's easier to figure out when rounds need changing, you just don't get that zing after a while, you can hear when that happens. Sorry, I'm coming on like I'm down on the idea - I'm not, it's just not practical for me.
I have a spreadsheet of all my past and current basses with fields for manufacturer, colour, pickup type, body wood, number of strings, country of origin and what I did with it (plus many more). I then like putting filters on the fields to see any trends. I tend to think not many people are as geeky (or tragic) as this.
Jesus Christ! You're right, that IS tragic... (your word, not mine!) I'm guessing you don't have kids..?
Playing in front of that rig is what every bass player should do at least once in there lives.
+1. Trouble is you only need to do it once to be continually dissatisfied with anything else.

It WILL make you a massive nerd. And a pedant. And given that most bass players can't keep original cases or ashtrays with their basses, or indeed even know what bloody day it is, it's hardly likely that a log book is going to get passed on to a new owner (for example). I can just imagine the ads... 'log book missing...' So it's going to be for your information only, really... You carry on by all means, but when I get a new or different bass the first thing I do is put some new strings on it as a matter of course.

If you can find a Burman then buy it. I had the same gear as Bigwan and I deeply regret selling it. I believe there is currently one on eBay. Hand-wired, top components, uncompromising build quality and reliability.

Try an e-Bay search for '100W valve amp'. Any decent valve amp will be suitable for bass, even something that looks like a PA amp. Don't be concerned that 100W won't be enough power - 100 valve watts is WAY louder than 100 solid state watts and will very easily keep up in a loud rock band with power to spare. I reckon you can pick up something very usable indeed for around £350-£400. Or you may consider a Peavey Valveking II or one of the Bugera models if you want to buy new. Be aware that valve amps need maintaining. They also need transporting and are generally heavy. But as you have discovered, the downsides can be well worth it if you haven't already had a hernia! There's nothing like the 'All-Valve Bounce'.
