Might be, but the cost is expensive!

I'm doing a lot more bass playing and would have to endeavour the joys of public transport
There's the rub. Cabs that handle lots of power, sound good AND are portable tend to be expensive. You might get lucky if you keep your eye out for a used cab in the BC marketplace.
As for cabs, I think you'll find a really good 2x10 could shift some serious air.
This... I actually think the Retro Two10 might well do you. Why not drop Alex at Barefaced an email? He'll tell you honestly if it will do the job. Or not. And he has a 1 month trial period, if it really doesn't work out you can send it back.
I fear a 2X10 won't have enough oomph for what my band play however.
Then the Retro Six10 is for you...
No, it was $100 for some shows, the rest they do for free!
Ah, maybe we're reading too much into this. It's just a blatant request for someone to work for board and lodging!
Another thing you might want to check. When you see an ad for a bass player for an established band, many times they are also looking for a guitarist, drummer and vocals. WHich means a band has fallen a part and it's someones desperate attempt to float a sinking ship. Here's another thought, a band says they are looking for a bass player, you check out their web site and everything looks cool. Always ask if the band is the same line up as seen in their web-site. You might be looking at a photos of a band several generations back, when they were good. Oh that "hot chic" she's not with us anymore.
Very good advice. I always try to avoid the following: 'Wanted - bass player, guitarist, drummer, vocalist, keyboards, bagpipes, etc etc' ...as it's inevitably a fantasist thinking a ready-made band is going to fall into his lap. Problem is they don't always list all the instruments and can have multiple ads - one for each instrument - to trap the unwary!

Given your desire for full-bandwidth clarity (and depending on your budget), I'd consider something from Aguilar, Bergantino or Barefaced. Though you may also like to consider trying a different amp, too... *opens can of worms*
As you get older, you get grumpier.
Bah! I've never heard such nonsense!

Do you have a roadie or do you haul your own gear?
But isn't that simply the clever ploy of a very, very good scammer..? You're all falling for it..!
Quite. The information behind the scam is all in the public domain, as we've found. An email like this and the necessary research behind it is only the work of an hour or two at the most and the rewards are potentially great if the information the scammer wants is forthcoming and that information is used intelligently. People see and hear what they would prefer to see and hear, and 'musicians' are very vulnerable to this kind of scam, because... well, because they are. I'll leave it at that.
I've heard of "Another one bites the dust" being played over the PA at a biker's funeral.
I've no doubt that bikers would find that very amusing.
...don't think the song meanings really matter, its just if people enjoy them.
I have a theory that a significant percentage of the public have no idea what the lyrics are to any given song.
-
$100.00 bucks a show? That's my pay and I'm in a local bar band. lol
I would have been much more likely to allow myself to become deluded for, say, $1500 a gig.
-
Possibly. Although I think 'tiny' percentage is one of those popular myths.
I should have said 'are among the minority of Americans who hold a passport'... either way, my in-laws are a pain in the arse and I'm glad they've gone home!
If you wear a neutral shirt...
Er... is that a doubleneck ukulele??
You're missing a trick... Double necks, duh
Christ! My old, worn skeleton can barely hold up a P-Bass for a couple of hours as it is! I'd need to be strong and muscular like, er... Mike Rutherford.
-
Without getting too deep and messy here, I always thought the relationship between the string and the bass depends on the relationship with the music being played.
It's nice to play Stax/Motown with flats and rock with rounds, admittedly (for example)... but it's possible to get a myriad of tones from flats by varying playing position, using a pick, using various FX and pre-amps, etc. I like rounds, but I prefer the silkiness of my La Bellas... um... ...dammit, I'm just going to have to get another bass and fit it with DR Fat Beams. Oh, well...
My friend was stopped for speeding on Route 66. He was doing 70mph. The policeman asked where he was from - London, England? Did you drive all the way here from there today? I bet they don't drive at 70mph in England do they?
Apparently 77% of Americans believe in angels and illiteracy runs at around 30%. I've just put my American in-laws in a taxi to the airport after a half-term visit. They are very conservative, middle-class and close-minded, yet are among the tiny percentage of Americans who hold a passport - they are considered to be weird, dangerous left-wing intellectuals where they live - Florida.

A good excuse to have a bass fitted with each type of string... or you could try a compromise, i.e. Status Hotwire Half Wounds.

@Seashell: I think the email sender saw an ad for the OP online.
But it could be real. People do get mugged and I'd hate to think of a family being in this plight and in a foreign country.
You forgot the smiley.
It's not helping no! I've got a thing for brittish built basses at the moment and as you say, they are very reasonably priced for vintage instruments that can only get rarer and increase in value...
There you go, you've sold it to yourself!! You're welcome!!
-
Send them some pictures of the most portly bass player you can find...
I can provide those if necessary.
-
Don't say stuff like that... GAS is easier to recognise as GAS if it's only me that wants the things I'm GASsing for. If someone else has the same GAS then my GAS starts to seem justified!
Oh, it's justified all right! What other high-quality, hand-built 1970s vintage bass can you get for £300-£400? It would be crazy not to!! ...This isn't helping, is it?

'Time is of the essence...' I bet it is! I don't see how anyone could think that this anything other than a pre-emptive scam warm-up. I could write a much better scam email than this - and I'm an honest, upstanding member of the community!* *May not actually be an honest, upstanding member of the community.
