Record a gig or rehearsal and play it back to him. If he's not totally cloth-eared, he'll realise he needs to up his game a bit.

Just off the wall... for a 4ohm one-cab solution I present the Schroeder 21012L for your consideration.

2 X 10" Neo Drivers
1 X 12" Neo Driver mounted on angled baffle
200W Tweeter with adjustable attenuator
1 X Speakon and 1 X 6.3mm jack inputs
1000W RMS @ 4ohms
49lb (22kg)
23.5 X 23.5 X 16" (60 X 60 X 40 cm)
It's a bit like a very light, 2-foot square 8X10. I've never been able to reach its limits, even with huge amounts of power going through it. And it sounds fantastic. It will fill any room with big, big bass. Sounds killer with my GB MB500 Fusion.
Just reading the review in BM . So if one of the speakers goes how long will it take to find out which one ?
PJB have a specially-trained mouse that runs around inside the cab. When it finds the faulty driver, it indicates which one it is via a series of squeaks. 'SKWEE, SKWEE, SKWEE!!' means the third driver (counting from front, top left). Amazing, really.
There is nowhere to hide when you are playing for the public.
+1 Very much so. It's being in the spotlight, the limelight, the headlights and under the microscope all at the same time. Think Eye of Mordor peering through a great a big satanic telescope, staring, staring, staring! Judging, judging, judging!! Gahhhh!! Is this making you feel any better, 4-string-thing??
I've known some bands of thoroughly decent chaps and chapesses who've done relatively well without penile tendencies.
Yes - and they speak very highly of you too, by all accounts...
Oddly, the only 100% bone fide cock I ever came across in an amateur band (in fact, in any band I've played in) was the band that ended up getting a modicum of success.
That doesn't surprise me in the least. Look at some of the bands who have had a modicum of success and check out the cock level. It's very high. Obviously people who are prepared to lie, cheat and claw their way to the top through untrammeled cockery are ipso facto undeserving of that position. David Cameron, for example. Boris Johnson.
Might get boring just playing 8 songs for 3 hours but at least we should get them right by the end of it...
You should be playing the eight songs for a lot longer than three hours! And be playing them back to front, upside down, inside and out, pillar to post, standing on one leg and facing east, up a tree and underwater! Whenever I see a live band I ask myself the question, 'have these people done the work?', and it's always very, very obvious what the answer is. You want to avoid a train wreck!
I ended up going for a GK MB Fusion 500.
I've used Markbass in the past and I like them, but currently use a GK MB500 Fusion and it's great. I think you'll like it. It does 'that' GK sound well enough, but it does a lot more besides. It goes very loud, too... if necessary.
Hehe! Actually the one with bindings is not mine ! But a friend of mine. Both sounds great but mine have a jazz neck and I prefer that
Ah yes, I see that now you mention it. Very nice.
...this P and my RW Jazz are getting a lot of love at the moment so neither will be up for sale in the near future.
That's something of a relief to be honest. Really liking the P though, worthy of a Limelight job.

As you're primarily a 5-string Jazz player Dave, will this will be up for sale soon..?
Two Limelight P's in the house
Very nice of course, but I can't help wondering... why? Is one for back-up purposes..?
If you get along well with the drummer then the rhythm section is sorted and you have a musical direction.
+1 Guitarist/Singers are ten a penny - good drummers are not!
I still like to turn real, tangible pages, though
We're a dying breed. Some kids laughed at me in the street the other day - for carrying a newspaper.
So this. I'm fortunate to be in a couple of bands where, when we rehearse - not practise, everyone pretty much knows what they are doing, because they've done their homework and playing the song together is where we iron out the wrinkles and decide on harmonies.
+1. Rehearsals are for rehearsing, not for learning material. I don't last long in a band that doesn't realise this.
yeah i was looking for the simple ones to start of with as James Jamersons lines are often quite complex especially the stuff with Stevie and Marvin
Learnt 'I Got You (I Feel Good)' for a cover band a while back. It's not hard but still has the funk... -

Was going to say James Brown too, he is the master. Bootsy Collins, Charles Sherrell, Bernie Odum, Tim Drummond, Fred Thomas. All good. -
If the gig's not until the end of June at least you still have time for some damage limitation IF you can impress upon the singer that he really needs to get his act together. Maybe show him this thread... Not necessarily more rehearsals (though that would be good) - maybe get him round with his guitar and go through the material, concentrating on his weakest songs, then the weakest bits of other songs, transitions, key-changes etc. It can be done if he's willing.
Oh Jeez, the hot flushes are starting again
My advice is to start drinking heavily at least an hour before the gig. Stagger on stage, trip over your lead and swear fluently. Then make loud comments about the legitimacy of the singer's birth and laugh uproariously between numbers. Leer openly at any attractive women and insult their boyfriends. Then at the end of the gig hurl your bass into the children's ball pit and urinate on the drums. I guarantee the gig will be spoken of for years to come and you will become a local celebrity. You're welcome.
