1. Would have voted 4, but since I got my 76P back I'm voting 5... did I ever tell you the story of my 76P..?
 2.
1961 Precision
3. There's not one single thing about it that I like! Apart from the fact that presumably it's flammable.
 4.
I don't think a single coil will ever sound quite like a split coil however much knob twiddling you indulge in.
Well I think that's on the money... mind you, some people need little excuse to indulge in knob-twiddling. ARF, ARF!!
 5.

I couldn't agree more.
 6.
Precision connoisseurs will disagree of course, but to my reasonably discerning ears it is close enough
See? I disagreed before you even said it.
 7.
I don't agree that a Jazz bass can sound like a Precision. You can mod or redesign a P bass as much as you like, but nothing else sounds as good as the standard P bass, which is why in reality they have ceased to evolve. They don't need to.
I agree, it can't. It's all down to the time and effort Leo took over the final placement of the split pickup (which is technically a humbucker). That above everything else is why a P sounds like a P and why it still endures after sixty-odd years. It can't be replicated by using the bridge pickup on a Jazz - it's a totally different bag of frogs.
 8.
Can't see any news of this?
His dates were on Wikipedia when I looked earlier, but now shows only date of birth. So not sure what's going on there. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Johnson_(bassist)
 9. He and Larry Graham were really the only slap players I had time for. And playing on one of the world's all-time best-selling albums was quite an achievement, imho. RIP.
 10. I got my best Jazz results (in my opinion) with both pickups up but with the bridge pickup backed off just slightly. Then it's down to how you address the bass, just as with any bass, there's no mystery... it's still in the fingers. The Jazz is generally used with roundwounds for that mid-growl, which sounds great, but I had most fun with flats. A dual-pickup bass with flats can sound monsterous live - you get a really solid, fundamental tone that works very well with the drums.
 11. Empress Compressor, bought Wednesday, here Friday morning by Special Delivery. Swift response, super-fast despatch, great comms, superb compressor, unbeatable price. What's not to like? Thoroughly recommend Darren, he's what buying on BassChat should be like every time! Thanks!
 12. Don't understand where this 'thin sound' criticism is coming from! A Jazz can be hefty as feck if you want it to be.
 13. I love the sound of Jazz Basses. I just don't get on with the necks. John Paul Jones, anyone..? TIm Commerford?
 14.
Tossers!
15. Excellent! Now I can stop planning to sell my family, possessions and internal organs! Congratulations.
 16. Hey Tom. We've had a few Talkbass-banned people turn up here... welcome to the forum.
 17.
...I'm starting a Carpenters tribute!
So you've only just begun..?
 18.
Hi Mark, it came from this guy on Ebay, it's not as obviously celluloid as the Spitfire one you had on your Limelight.
They're not bad at all! Spitfire are more or less indistinguishable from the real thing, but cost a lot more...
 19. Just out of idle curiosity, where did you source the pickguard, Dave?
 20. Looks like I'm late to the party, but I'll stick my belated 2p in: P-Bass... but you knew that already. I too tried a Fretwrap and while it is good for stopping unwanted sustain, overtones and resonance on open strings (always handy) it's no good at all for 'that' country/soul sound on fretted notes, where it does nothing. It also hampers fingering at the first fret. The traditional 'old bit of foam' shoved under the strings at the bridge is hard to beat - I do this as my fingerstyle technique leaves something to be desired - I pretty much automatically palm mute when using a pick, so it's not an issue then.
 21.
Think you should buy this Mark I have one and it is a ton of bass for 200 bangers
Not helping!!
 22. Would someone please buy this total bargain? I can't justify it but it's getting very tempting!
 23.
You want to try one of those Markbass TTE 500 Randy Jackson, I think you may enjoy
Yes I do, I've had mild GAS for one of those for ages. Just haven't got round to it yet.
