[sub]In almost all cases I switch off any Rap or Jazz. To my taste and personally to my ear both are without merit.[/sub]
I can see the merit in Jazz... after all, Jazz is the teacher and Funk is the preacher... and there are examples of rap music I do like... mostly early examples, it's true, but they are out there. Can't agree with a recent article I read in the news that early-nineties Hip-Hop was actually more influential and groundbreaking than the Beatles ever were... this information apparently from 'a study'... makes me wonder who 'the study' was carried out by. Probably 'a study' by people under thirty, I'll warrant. Bloody kids! Get off my lawn! *Waves walking stick*
Queen - This Thing Called Love - that faux rockabilly thing just hacked me off at the time and ever since. Most Motown - great bass lines, crap lyrics. Rod Stewart - always want to like him but his material is all so lame especially the worst abomination We Are Sailing. Mull of Kintyre - hated it then, hate it now.
Queen - The song you mention, I agree. Motown - Some of the lyrics are dodgy for sure, but some are classic. I don't care anyway if it's Jamerson or Babbit on bass. Rod Stewart - terrible song but guaranteed a great life for his many ex-wives and dependents. Mull of Kintyre - McCartney is an excellent and very underrated bass player but I can't forgive him for this! Good for his wallet, though.
...never been a huge fan of flats on the Wal before, I miss the roundwound growl. Any suggestions?
DR Fat Beams. Growl and heft in spades and would suit a Wal down to the ground... In my humble opinion, of course. I've also been enjoying D'Addario EXL-170 BT (Balanced Tension) which also growl very nicely, if that's your thing.
My reason for disliking a lot of (especially old) stuff may be seen as a bit odd. Basically, it’s about production values. We’ve taken many technical leaps over the past 20 years, and when I listen to modern rock / pop punk songs (they just happen to be the genres I enjoy most) I get a room-filling sound with total clarity and kick drum & bass guitar that can be physically felt. The past is littered with ‘classics’ which are, to me, dirges – Whiter Shade of Pale, House of the Rising Sun, Comfortably Numb etc etc etc – but as a bassist I was brought up on Level 42 and worshipped everything they did. These days, though, I hear anything prior to Retroglide and just think it sounds flimsy in terms of production. There are songs I hate, of course, but there are many I used to like but can’t listen to now because they just don’t sound as good.
I'm the opposite - I hate modern-sounding production that pushes everything to 0db and keeps it there. Totally lacking in dynamics and very tiring to listen to. As far as songs I don't like go, I would definitely walk at least 500 miles to avoid a certain song by a certain Scottish duo. Agree with anyone who says they don't like another band whose initials are DS... also don't have time for anything by Simply Red or the Eagles, probably due to having to listen to their albums on rotation against my will... And anything by the truly appalling Gwen Stefani, who in my opinion represents everything that is wrong with the world and should be lashed until she drops. On prime-time TV.

I've changed my mind - I think it's cobblers. -

Superb. Particularly good for sole music, apparently. -
I bore witness to the rehearsal the amp was used in, and was really surprised actually! Fairly similar to the Ampeg SVT450H, but it seemed somehow clearer. Definitely the best amp I've ever heard for £100!
Well that's done it! Thanks for that... It's quite heavy though! I wonder what the Ashdown clone is like... I suppose if it bursts into flames it'll prove it's an authentic copy...
Took it to practice tonight and I'm very happy with the sound.
That's good... Can you compare the basic tone with anything? Is it a 'rock' tone for example? Does it resemble the Ampeg amp it's a clone of?
The speaker sim is always on with the first generation pedals, and the deluxe model. The later pedal just added the option to turn it off.
Ah, I did not know that, thanks. Either way I think a combined VT/power amp in one box is too good to miss.
-
Ah, that's a bit of a bummer Lozz. I've always had the earlier Version 1 with no speaker-sim, so did everything I had to do without it. They say you don't miss what you've never had, so I'm still up for it!

Found this thread on TalkBass from 2009... perhaps companies DO listen to their customers? Eventually? http://www.talkbass.com/threads/dear-tech21-vt-bass-with-class-d-power-amp.594358/ I'm back to needing yet another VT Bass, so I'm waiting for these to appear with bated trousers.
But it is certainly true that some people are better at explaining their position politely than others!
Do you mean you're better at politely explaining your position than I am..? Yes, I'd agree with that.

I'm selling because since I've had a P-Bass in the house again this hasn't had a look-in and has been languishing in the cupboard under the stairs. I think my long experiment with Jazz Basses is finally over and I have to face the truth, which is that I'm a dyed-in-the-wool, bang-it-on-the-table screaming Precision Bass man. I've been considering Pyramid flats too and would be interested to know what you think of them.
Right! The next person to mention 'P-bass' has to explain to my wife why I need one because she won't believe me
Dear Mrs Mojo: It's essential that Mojo has a P-Bass in his collection. This is because the P-Bass has been fundamental to popular music since 1951, when it first came into production. It was improved slightly in 1957, but since then it has remained unchanged, largely because it's great just the way it is. I bet all the pop and rock tunes that were the soundtrack to your youth, and that take you instantly back there when you hear them, had their bass lines played on a P-Bass. You already know 'that' sound, it's probably deep within your psyche. Every bass player NEEDS a P-Bass - without one, he or she becomes sad, listless and a figure of fun to other bass players. There are those among us (myself included) who are of the opinion that a P-Bass is the one and only bass that any player ever needs. It is all things to all players, the One Bass, the Fundament, the 'IT'. To deprive him of one would not only be harsh, it would be unnecessarily cruel and heartless. And if you allowed him to get one, just think of all the little favours he'll have to do for you, all the shoes he'll have to buy for you! It would be crazy not to, frankly. Best regards discreet

Not good, but if he was in a traffic jam... of course this is unusual, but what is more worrying is the huge number of people (I know, because I've seen 'em) who will text or answer emails on their phones while driving. You can tell they're doing it because they have their phones in their laps and you can see in their rear-view mirrors that they're looking down at their phones when they should be looking at the road. Not just in non-moving traffic either, but while driving. I've never seen such recklessness. This crass and dangerous behaviour should result in a permanent ban and/or a £10,000 fine - then we'll see if that makes a difference. Stupid bastards! [/rant]
A comparison of the saddles is shown in the pic.
I think for the look of the thing I probably would have replaced this bridge with an identical bridge that had threaded saddles - possibly even a new one - having 'aged' it somewhat beforehand, but not so much that it couldn't be adjusted. Though it's better to have function over form, obviously.

So it could be someone playing a bass in the passenger seat of a parked car? Unusual, but not quite such an interesting story...

Cover versions - do you ask permission?
If you plan to perform them in public the venue needs a PRS licence, and if you sell or give away for promotional purposes recordings then you need to apply (and pay) for a PRS licence.
^ This hairy fellow speak the truth ^ -
