I was horrified when someone said to me they could wash it off and get it back to white again.
Good grief. The very definition of missing the point!
  2.
USA Fender Precision, 1976 - Olympic White, one-piece maple neck, black 3-ply guard... sold here nearly four years ago. Hopefully coming home in a week or two!
I'm very pleased to report that the eagle has landed and will not be taking flight again... 3.
Nice bass but they're stretching the celebrity definition a bit far.
Sorry to say I've never heard of him. But then I'm quite sure he's never heard of me, either. I don't get why you'd buy a bass on the strength of it being previously owned by a 'celeb'. What possibly difference can it make?
  4.
Now £550 people.....
Please stop tempting me! I'm skint! *Sobs into hanky*
  5.
And what do you need a tone control for
On a P-Bass, mainly so you can roll it off.
  6. Good work. You can't beat white and maple!
Maybe add a neck mudbucker at a later stage ala Billy Sheehan?
And a tone control!

After four years in the GAS wilderness, I finally bought my beloved 1976 Fender P back from Dave. Nothing but good things to report as always. Dave was the perfect custodian. He kept the bass safe and didn't play it much. And special thanks for allowing me to buy it back! My BassChat journey has come full circle. *Sings* Sunrise, sunset... sunrise, sunset...
  8.
Wow! One of the best precisions I've seen. Not a great lover of precisions but that's awesome. Excuse my ignorance , but is it s refin or has it aged into that fantastic yellow ? Now keep it !
Thanks Ray... it's not a refin. As I understand it, the creamy aging of the finish is due to degradation of the clear poly coat. Underneath this, the colour coat is as white as the day it was made. If you look at the picture of the forearm-contour wear, you can see this. This aged vintage-white/cream finish is highly prized by collectors. If a 70s Fender bass were very white it would likely be a refin.
  9.
...when chatting with people at gigs always felt I'd have to make some sort of self deprecating joke about my age. Just in case people thought I hadn't noticed I was in my 50's and shouldn't be up there with youngsters of 35! So thanks for the lightbulb moment, discreet. I'm going to try not to mention it again.
You're more than welcome. Of course, to me you're just a young strip of a lass. So it's all relative.
  10.
Aaaaaaaarrrrrggggghhhhhhh................
That date not confirmed, Lozz - I made it up.
  11.
It's truly a thing of beauty. Great stories behind it too. Must be a real treat to have her home once again!
Thank you... it really is. Sounds silly but I'll sleep tonight! This bass had been with me all my adult life until I sold it. I really didn't think it was going to leave such a big P-shaped hole... total first-world stuff obviously and a bit embarrassing really, but hey.
  12.
On the Talkbass site, Tech 21 have said they hope it will be available by mid June
June 2016 in the UK, then?
  13.
Use a seperate DI box & problem solved.
Well that's it, isn't it? I don't think it's a deal-breaker.
  14. Tacky dashboard mats are good. I use one because I like to have my cab at an angle. I've got a Fusion, I just unscrewed the feet so there's more contact with the pad, et violin! I can have the cab at quite crazy angles without the amp going anywhere.
  15.
...when can we expect the first gig with the reunited bass?
I'll let you know for sure.
Well done Mark, great bass there, and nice bit of history/storyline to go with it. Full marks to Dave as well on this.
Thanks Lozz, I knew you'd appreciate a decent 70s P-Bass.
  16.
Just no. That is almost a custom job now!
Well the restoration was extensive. And expensive! But it turns out I also have an emotional investment in it. What the hell's happening to me? ...It must be the menopause.
Nice one Mark I knew this was the "one" you were going to get really pleased for you
Thanks Paul.
  17.
So what are you going to do with all the others now this fella has returned home?
Some had to be sold to get this one. I currently have this P, my Hayman 4040 and my Sire MM V7, that's it. Briefly toyed with the idea of selling the Hayman as I don't use it much, but I don't want another situation where I regret selling a bass! I still have GAS for a white Spector Euro, but that can wait!
  18.
Will you play it with the ashtrays on?

My bet is bridge cover only
Bridge cover only it is.
  19.
It's weird, as gorgeous as it was it never felt like it was truly mine, it always seemed like I was borrowing the bass. It's back where it belongs
Thanks, Dave. Is it because I kept referring to it as 'my' bass?
  20.
That is a thing of beauty..... and you're forgiven the 'sentimental old fool' part.
I thank you... and less of the 'old'...
  21. NOBD - USA Fullerton 1976 Precision Bass *AUDIO* New Old Bass Day! *AUDIO FILE* Me pretending to be Bob Babbit and failing. But hopefully you'll get some idea of how the bass sounds. Long story short - I bought this bass brand new in 1976. I sold it four years ago to Rumple (Dave) of this parish when GAS got the better of me after spending far too much time on BassChat. I regretted selling it, to say the least. I have now been able to buy it back and I thank Dave for looking after it for me. It is absolutely 100% stock and original - apart from the pickup foam, which I replaced a while back (I still have the original foam thanks to Dave, who lost it then found it again ). The pickguard has been off once to replace the foam. That is all. The neck has never been off. To say I'm glad to have it back would be an understatement. I know every single ding, dent, scratch and stain. So it turns out the only proper way to 'relic' a bass is to play it for decades... I stuck a lit fag behind the E string in 1979 and accidentally scorched the headstock. If you had told me then there would come a time when you wouldn't be able to smoke while playing bass in public, I would have laughed in your face. I've been playing it this morning and it's like the return of an old friend. And I've given up smoking. I've just done the 'bathroom scales' thing - it weighs eight pounds. Yes, it's just wood, wire and plastic. Yes, I'm probably a sentimental fool. But I don't care... What is this thing (below)? This bird-shaped burn or scorch-mark was on the bass when I bought it. It is UNDER the clear coat. I asked the shop guy what it was when I bought it and he said 'Er.. they've all got that - it proves it's a real Fender...' My 16-year-old self was happy with this explanation, but I always wondered why it didn't appear on other Fenders... for a while I was convinced every Fender I saw was a fake because it didn't have this mark on the back! You can see the original Olympic White colour through this forearm-contour wear (below) The creamy yellow colour is a result of the degradation of the clear coat. Underneath this, the original colour is just as white as when the bass was new.
  22.
...what is the black box in between the two pick ups?
I believe that's what proper bass players call a 'ramp'...
  23.
Foderas come with an inbuilt security system like this...... https://www.youtube....h?v=kUFJwr1d880
Er... that might be overkill. We're just professionals doing our jobs...
  24. Tricky! These are all really good. I've noticed an exponential improvement in composition and production skills these last few months, so well done to everyone and kudos to all for taking the time and trouble to produce an entry. I really must try to enter next month.
  25.
My plan is to use the Fodera most of the time, including all practice, however there are obviously some gigs which only ever want a Precision...
Sweet. Depends what kind of venues you play of course, but will you be in any way anxious about gigging a bass of such value? Just curious really, not trying to make a particular point!
