Nice work. Can't wait to see the finished item.

Not at all, IF you believe the hype. If someone spends £100 on a new bridge you can bet they'll hear a positive difference. Otherwise they've wasted their money and no one wants to admit they've done that, do they? Even if you compared the old and new bridges in the lab and found no difference, the buyer will still say they 'prefer' their new bridge - for whatever reason. That's how marketing works. People will always buy things they genuinely need because they must. Everything else has to have a 'need' artificially generated for it. That's what advertising is for.

Well... I'm not convinced that the notional extra sustain available from an aftermarket bridge is even a desirable trait. Especially given the number of people who shove foam under their strings to reduce it. Sustain may well be sought after in the guitar world, but not bass. And I've never tried a bass and rejected it on the grounds it didn't have enough sustain. Also, I certainly wouldn't take a manufacturer's word on their own products - especially aftermarket bass components and the wild claims made for them. These people are in business to make money and they're not going to tell you their spiffy new bass bridge does bugger-all, are they?

Eleven-year-old zombie thread resurrection! FWIW and IME body wood makes very little (if any) difference to the overall 'tone' of a bass guitar. Pickups, pickup placement, electronics and strings make a huge difference, however. The biggest difference is down to the player. Yes! It's all in the fingers. In My Humble Opinion. YMMV, etc etc... *unfollows thread and hides*

Heh. Seriously though, its fine to replace a bridge if you like the look of a different one, or your current bridge is uncomfortable in some way. But if you're expecting any major improvement in tone, I think you may be disappointed. Lot of placebo effect involved in this kind of thing. Strings are something else. Different strings can change the sound and playability of a bass out of all proportion to their cost. Whether or not it's an improvement is moot, of course...

Sometimes enough, though. Thhp.

So do light tuners.

I don't understand why a high mass bridge with saddles in full contact with the baseplate (and therefore the body) is desirable. Surely a lighter bridge with small points of saddle contact (like a BBOT) will have more sustain, not less, as the heavy, full-contact bridge is going to absorb the vibration of the string into the bridge and body, no? Which is why the humble BBOT works well enough. I bet a high percentage of Fenders used on all those hit records of the 60s and 70s had stock bridges on them. So I call BS on the whole concept! It's a ploy to distract you from your playing and spend yet more money on things you don't need! Thhhppp!

Generally I'd say no, but it's a very nice bit of tort and it helps that it's a maple neck. Modern tort and rosewood would be a no-no. IMHO.

Wait, what?? Oh bloody hell, I'm lost! *runs around in small circles, flapping hands*

Having said this is my last one... I still have a yen for a Peterbuilt-style 55 P in signature blue and gold with a very amber glossy neck... dammit!!

Bah! You had to go and bring maffs into it. Or geometry. Or something.
-
Just to be contrary, I prefer 7.25" radius boards. But they're few and far between - Fender Classic 50s and Roadworns have them, as do various other stock basses. But not many. You can also buy 7.25" board necks, but they're expensive.

Yes, but that would have made my 'may contain nuts' scrotum tattoo bitterly ironic.

I would have used a router, but I'm really not comfortable with power tools since I nearly sliced my balls off with a circular saw during a cab build. Just sayin'.

*SOLD* Hipshot Ultralites HB6C *£45 Posted* These are the Licensed versions - just the same as the Chrome/Satin USA versions in appearance and in use, just not made in the USA. Bought these for a Jazz project but I'm bored with that now, so here they are. This particular set is unusual in that I'm including four extra bushes I was sent by Jason Ungleich of Hipshot - which make the tuners properly fit a standard 18mm Fender-type tuner hole. Without these, they tend to rattle around and cause a lot of fuss and messing about with metal tape and so on. Very firm, positive action when strung and resistance can be changed via a hex adjuster on the shaft. They aren't 100% brand new and mint - have a look at the pic - they have been fitted to a Jazz Bass and that Bass has been gigged and rehearsed, and the tuners have one or two nicks and scuffs. This is purely cosmetic and the tuners work as well as they ever did. Also, I can't find the bloody screws. But all you need are FOUR standard tuner backplate screws just to keep them from moving around on the back of the headstock. The main attachment is to the front of the headstock using bushing nuts. These will typically save you at least 1/2lb in weight at the headstock over a standard set of large-backplate tuners and can help with neck dive problems. Makes all the difference! Anyway, they're up for grabs for £45 posted. Payment via PayPal or Bank Transfer is acceptable. Now SOLD. I thank you!

It's uncanny. That's EXACTLY how I imagined it.

I use a sanding block, plus a large magic marker for the curvy bits. Wrapped in sandpaper or micromesh, obviously.
