1. Very interesting, thanks for posting.
 2.
...often the folk who say such things wouldn't know a decent bass line from a hole in the ground...
How true. Good to see you Dave, hope your missus is on the mend.
 3. Fantastic colour combination! A Jazz with a P neck! I'm in love!
 4.
I agree.. Perhaps I should try selling it to a museum?? Ha ha ha
I bet the Horniman would be interested in it for their Music Gallery.
 5.
...if I want to give slapping a go I'll play Run For Cover...
Very appropriate.
 6. Whatever happens, you can be sure that both eBay and PayPal will continue to suck giant hairy moose balls.
 7.
...I bought one 25yrs ago and it still works!
Is it still in tune?
 8.
OK, I agree in theory (hence this thread), but if this is the case, and as suggested by many players above and quite a few pros (for example Barrie's post above), why do quite a few people indicate that they choose maple boards for brightness (and never in my experience the opposite)?
Going against my own comment somewhat, in my experience maple boards give more of a scooped sound rather than just extra brightness. But whether there's any difference or not, I think any changes in pickups, electronics or strings will make an exponentially larger and definitely measurable difference. So it's down to which you prefer the look of in my opinion. If you prefer a rosewood board but want extra 'brightness' use bright strings, snappy pickups or simply adjust your EQ!
 9.
When trying out basses I generally just slap the crap out of it as fast as I can...
Ahh, so that's you, is it? Stop it at once!
 10. I don't think I've ever seen a 50-year-old bass in such good condition. Remarkable.
 11.
Anyway what better test of the bass than to try out the stuff you're going to end up playing on it live!?
Well I suppose so, but hadn't you better take the rest of the band along with you too in that case..?
 12.
I thought only people who had roadies used all-valve amps !
Makes a lot of sense. Which is why I don't have one. A valve amp, that is. Or a roadie.
 13.
I have been known to take a list of songs with me just so I don't dry up!
It's not a gig, you know...
 14. I just play The Enormous Room by Michael Manring - always gets a mixed reaction...
 15.
Given all the Simply Red love on this thread, this is going to be very exciting news for some: http://www.music-new...p?nItemID=88793
GAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!! I mean... thanks for the link, I look forward to it. What an historic event.
 16.
...back to spanking
Aren't you going to play your new bass for a bit first..?
 17.
...it's quite a thick tone no matter what I do with the EQ...
Gigged with mine last week and I love the EQ. However I'm really getting into using it passive now, too.
 18.
Well it's nearly up there with the Sue Ryder bass
Oh come on, nothing's that good..
 19.
Gold hardware...
I agree, except when it's on either a white Warwick or a white Spector. Don't ask me why, because I don't know.
 20.
Business card. Draw round the neck heel for the shape
Yes, this. A business card is as good as anything. Take time over cutting it and get the shape snug in the neck pocket.
 21.
I still think they are meant as spares for the first five frets.
There's a fifth fret??
 22.
I love the scene in The Big Lebowski where he criticises the taxi-drivers taste in music: "Come on, Man. I had a rough night, and I hate the f*ckin' Eagles, man!"
I have a lot of time for that film.
 23.
That and the protracted chordplay and tapping beyond the 12 fret.
There's a twelfth fret??
