Sometimes, the almost limitless pallet of sounds an active bass allows you to use works against you, in that you always feel there is a better sound somewhere else in there. It gives you a feeling of not being satisfied, or missing out on that elusive killer tone. With a passive, you are far more limited, and learn to make do, which forces you to create in a much more focused way. I have found after years of various active basses, I was relying on the bass to find me 'that sound', and sometimes I was lucky enough to drop on it...( this with ref to all venues need a different sound, and no setting suits all.) A few weeks ago I blew the cobwebs of a Yamaha BB 2024 after giving up on it as being inferior to my active Mike Lull. After a half hour or so, I began listening to the bass, instead of what was missing compared to the active sound, and I realised I was hearing a much more 'real' and open sound rather than that almost overworked and hyper sensitive sound I was used to from actives. Perhaps my perception has always been (without knowing it) that active basses had to be better because they had 'more' of everything. I have now deliberately painted myself into a corner, and have chosen to limit myself by using my passive again, and the difference is little short of amazing. I feel I am far more responsible for how it sounds, rather than a part owner of it. There is far more to active or passive than just the bass itself... It's far more about what's in your head than in the bass itself.
Interesting post! However, an active tone circuit doesn't bother me, it's just another tool in the box (fnarr). I find that very small adjustments work best anyway. I like having the option and there are situations where passive is preferable and vice-versa. As Marvin said, it's good have have an active/passive switch, then you can have the best of both worlds with the same bass. I'm talking about the Sire MM V7 here, and I think he is too.
Best not then. If you use a toad caught before midnight, you are certain to end up sprawled cross the drummer's kit. Again.
As long as I'm not sprawled across the drummer. Again.
Sure, first you'll need a toad caught at midnight under a full moon...
Aw, that's me out then. I have to be lying in my coffin before midnight.
There's no way I could afford to blow that amount of money on those current prices
I might - if my resistance was low.
How do they treat 'Complex oboe passage'?
I think it's more of a procedure than an ailment.
Standing next to the drums was truly torturous.
Bad luck Gary. But that's generally true even when you're feeling OK.
Will you have it Wednesday?
Unfortunately not! I'll be sporting the Sire MM V7, so it should be a good test. -
...I was midway through a complex oboe passage...
Euphemism..?
-
...I was so out of it on various painkillers that I wasn't really aware that I was playing, just listening to the band. Our drummer said afterwards it was the best I've ever played! I do remember hearing some bass runs and fill and thinking 'I wish I could play like that'.
Finally, you've cracked it!
...wonder if Sire will be able to resist hiking up the prices in the near future.
Not if their 'instruments for all' philosophy is true. Nevertheless I got mine early, just in case... -
So, back to where you started? Any more info?
Yes, full circle. I will post a NBD thread in due course.
Is it white by any chance?
Yes. Yes, it is. -
Not me who was ill, but a punter. Did a gig years ago (I was 15-16 or thereabouts) and in the interval was chatted up by a very attractive older woman (25-ish), so we danced... unbeknownst to me she'd been at the sherry pretty heavily all night - long story short, she vomited all over me, head to foot. I spent the second set reeking of terrible sherry spew and trying to remember my basslines while shaking the bigger chunks out of my hair. Needless to say I didn't get a bunk-up out of it. Happy days!
Thankfully Russ Andrews make a 10 amp 'Superfuse'. That's a relief.
Thank the LORD! And such a bargain, too! I'll buy twelve!
I had that feeling with a Thunderbird bass. After a while it became used less and less in favour ot the P bass.
I have a P bass incoming and I'm pretty sure that's going to disperse my Stingray GAS. At least for a bit, anyway. -

discreet replied to donslow's topic in Amps and Cabs
It's not a problem transporting, really just looking for experience / advice on how others carry theirs about
Then either a lightweight rack case like a Boschma would do you, or a decent rack bag. -
I would maybe tell him that the word will be out that he steals kit at auditions. At least that way, people will be wary of him and not give him the chance.
I'm not sure what the rules are on this forum about public naming and shaming? But if he is definitely guilty then maybe it's an option?

discreet replied to donslow's topic in Amps and Cabs
I love beastly valve amps (and heavy SS amps, too) but transporting them gets old really quick. If this is a major problem for you, you may want to consider one of the many excellent lightweight amps now available... there are lots of threads here on the subject. -
