1.
...The Lakin simply nailed the sound in my head. I still don't tend to like rounds on a P but the sound was more mellow, perhaps more 'vintage'. The tone pot also seemed to respond better, allowing a more nuanced roll-off...
That's what I was hoping for, thanks... I have one or two basses I need to acquire first, but a Lakin is definitely in the cludgie. Now then... what's that Orgasmatron platform thingy all about..?
 2.
...there's some mysterious factor which all all-valve amps have which SS amps don't
Yes! There's magic in them glowing bottles, I tells ya!
 3.
The Lakin... just effortlessly pushed all the right buttons.
That's good to know because I like the look of 'em! Any further comments, Jack?
 4.
Never heard of a "Pleasure Board" before, but having looked it up I'm a little alarmed to see that it is driven by a specially designed "Pleasure Pump"
Obviously it's not being used properly - everyone has their clothes on.
 5. Very nice! It's as I suspected... I don't think I'd get out of there without a serious wallet-hammering (not a euphemism).
 6. Well that's the problem. It's very hard to describe 'heft'. I only experience it with valve amps. I also call it the 'all-valve bounce'.
 7.
What is the actual effect? What happens when you give the hefty amp a large transient signal (I guess you mean lots of fast attack?). Surely this can be replicated with a compressor?
I've used many different compressors over the years and they don't provide 'heft'. I'm not tech in any way, but I suspect it's something to do with power supply voltages?
 8.
Tell him there is clear CCTV footage of him putting the case into his car, tell him you won't tell the police if he just gives you the case back/covers the cost of the contents?
If he was prepared to commit theft in the first place he's going to have no problem sticking to his story at all costs. And if he's innocent he's going to have no problem sticking to his story and quite right too. So either way this may not be a great idea...
 9.
I suspect he is guilty of negligence rather than theft.
That hadn't even occurred to me. Which is probably why I'm not a high-ranking police officer. Then there's the criminal record of course, so... meh.
 10.
I don't get it. What can you do on a 4 string that you can't on a 5?
Er... play it in any meaningful way? So am I to believe that the 5-string appeared because in the late 70s and early 80s non-bass players decided to take responsibility for the low-end of pop music with keyboards and play basslines lower than a 4-string? Sounds like an irresponsible lack of thought to me!
I get really bored of this whole "debate" to be honest. The "who needs five strings, four is enough" people are just as tedious and predictable as the "five strings are like four strings but much much better and everyone should get one" people. Fours work for some people, fives for others. Just buy what works for you and let other people do what works for them!
Yes, this! I'm bored with the 'debate' too, now. Unfollow and peace out!
 11.
That's one of the things mentioned in the Stewart Ward article I linked to above. Basically, the power supplies were crap and that made the amp sound good.
Ah, naturally I didn't read that. But I hope this means a heft pedal is possible.
 12.
Early all-valve guitar amps used valve rectifiers, such as EZ80, EZ81 and GZ34. These were very good at 'heft'. This has got me thinking that one way forward might be a simple 3-watt amp with valve rectifier driving a DI transformer.
Dave, do it! If you can come up with a 'valve heft' pedal it'll be worth a fortune!
 13. Hybrid amps with a single 12AX7 in the pre circuit are largely ineffective, in my opinion. You do get some warmth, but I think it's mainly there so the manufacturer can say it's a 'valve amp'. There should be a label on the front stating 'valve is for marketing purposes only'. I had a VT Bass for a while and that does a fair valve grit impersonation, but has no valve in it... you still don't get much heft, though. I believe the reason for the perception of 'heft' in valve power amp transformers is due to 'sag'. As I understand it, 'sag' refers to the reduction of the power supply voltage in response to large transient signals which lends an important dynamic 'feel' to the amp that is not found in solid state amps... I could be wrong of course, as I'm no techie. But I do know the most 'heft' I've ever experienced in 40 years of playing bass has been from all-valve amps.
 14.
I was led to understand that Hendrix even played with some of those guys on the Chitlin' Circuit before he "made it" in the UK. Or am I wrong again?
Nope.
 15.
You do if you have issues with the bass player. They are brothers! Haha.
Neither! It's just not particularly helpful as a pickup demo. But I wouldn't be too useful in that context either.
 16.
It's like I said, they are top musicians, this is only a snapshot of what they do.
I have NO issue with the drummer.
 17. He does admit it's not to everyone's taste... ...and it's got to be the most colourful bit of plywood I've seen today...
 18.
I know both of these boys. They are top notch musicians IMO, and good lads!
Apologies if offence caused. That's the trouble with taking the piss out of people doing stuff on a public video, on a public forum.
 19.
We need a competition , best spoof demo !
This has been posted before, but it always makes me laugh like a drain. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waIhJDgC5dQ&list=RDwaIhJDgC5dQ&index=1
 20.
This is a particularly annoying example I found recently...

That one in particular does my nut.
You've got to admire the stance, though...
 21.
In my opinion I don't think they're the tightest, most proficient or technically amazing band...
They never have been - I think that's the whole point and is what makes/made them original and exciting. As someone said earlier, what seems to get forgotten is just what an incredible songwriting team The Glimmer Twins actually are/were. It's this strength, coupled with the ability to bang it out live with maximum attitude and without worrying overly about piddling details like timing, remembering arrangements or working out solos that got them where they are/were.
 22.
Over the last couple of years I've enjoyed rehearsing with a 60's and a couple of 70 P basses, with no issues.
Off-topic briefly, I enjoyed playing your 66 P Gary... ooh, yeah.
 23.
Just out of interest, would they have got the gig?
24. Agree with Lozz, I use a 4-ohm Schroeder 21012L with my G-K MB500 Fusion and it's very good indeed, though this cab has far less of a 'mid-hump' than the 1212L I had previously. It's always worth having a look at the Barefaced Bass website too.
 25. I was going to say you should have no issues with gigging a 70s bass... ...but a RIC?? Oh no, no, no good at all. It will fail on you for sure! It'll fall apart after five minutes! Not really - it'll be fine. Don't worry about it. The issue is not about gigging the bass, it's about being a little bit more vigilant re theft prevention, imho.
