1. I'm into funk, 'groove music' and rock. And preamps.
 2.
...they've certainly sold quickly.
Luckily mine's for sale - £900.
 3.
For a little while last year you were very enthusiastic indeed about switching to 5-string. I think you may even have said that you could see yourself playing five strings exclusively in the future. I get that that may have been a brief honeymoon period, but surely you can see where the rest of us are coming from!
Oh well, if you're going to go round remembering what I said in the past, what do you expect? Here's a phrase I thought I would never type and post on this forum: I was wrong.
Nope, I can't stand Stevie Wonder either, or pretty much any other funk or soul music to be honest.
Well that's a thing, because I love the funk - it's the 'preacher' (where jazz is the 'teacher'), but I don't like soul. Or SW, obviously.
 4.
Talking to my local luthier last night, who is also a photographer, he came to the conclusion that 5 vs 4 is the same as Canon vs Nikon. There is no more correct answer but it does not stop these type of threads from appearing every so often. His view, but I know I am right! :-) I also use Nikon.
You're right, they will appear - especially if you start them yourself. But there is no 'right' answer, as you say. It's a great opportunity to wind up 5-string players though, they're usually a bit touchy and defensive about their choice. *Runs away*
 5.
...If it's a choice of doing a Stevie Wonder session in Eb (JTUK mentioned Eb being SW's deault key) with a 5 string, or sticking to my 4 string guns and staying at home, then perhaps I could tolerate that B string ugliness
SW songs being a great example of 5-stringery that leaves me cold. But then I'm probably the only human in the world who doesn't love SW and his works.
Another obvious advantage is that I can play chords that simply aren't playable on a 4-string.
Chords?? More controversy! Another comment that makes me believe that 5-string bassists are essentially frustrated guitar players!
 6.
Radio 4. There's something really soothing about the Shipping Forecast and the coastal station reports.

BBC World Service. Or silence.
Sailing By...
 7.
"Often musicians and any Poser express derogatory first if you arrive by Behringer equipment"
I don't think anyone can argue with that.
 8.
...basses tend to sit quite tight on me.
Excellent euphemism! Not as cutting as 'no stranger to the pie-shop'. I'm a 'larger gentleman' myself btw and therefore am allowed to say these things.
 9. Hmm... I can't imagine three BassChatters all telling a lie by omission. Possibly they didn't see neck-dive as being a problem in the first place. Is it a bass that is particularly known for neck-dive issues, i.e. a Thunderbird or some such? Is the neck-dive the problem you thought you could deal with, or is that another problem?
 10.
No 5ers in stock :'(
Wow. Thomann say 'on request'. I wonder when the next shipment will be?
 11.
I have to say I agree with everything you say here.
Well that makes a nice change!
 12.
The growth of the 5 string has coincided with a decline in memorable, melodic bass lines. That's more than a coincidence IMO.
You might have something there! My dalliance with 5-string basses depressed the crap out of me. The 'B' is just too different to the other strings... not necessarily in tension (or whatever you want to call it) but I found I had to address it differently, in a way I didn't like. It seemed temperamental somehow and demanded special treatment, which I ultimately resented. A 5-string bass isn't just a 4-string with an extra string - it's a completely different instrument in my opinion. One I don't like. YMMV obviously. The only advantage (for me) was the fact that you don't have to move around the fretboard so much. But I don't think having those few lower notes is worth the extra learning curve, the extra weight and the extra expense. I found it a relief to get back to four strings, frankly. And another thing, the usual songs cited as great examples of 5-stringery leave me completely cold! There, I've said it. Thhpp!!
 13. Yeah, we're mostly complete morons.
 14.
ahhh its been up then, bugger, sorry.
Not at all, I never get tired of marveling at it! It's hard to believe not only that someone would create this abomination in the first place, but then list it on eBay in the hope of selling it? What's going on there, then??
 15.
Would like to try one of these basses, but would not put up my hopes too high.
Why not?
 16. Ah, the ten million pound bass is back! Why it doesn't just get snapped up is beyond me! Surely worth every penny...
 17.
I wonder what it would give at 8 ohms...
I'm guessing around 380W, though obviously you won't be running at maximum output.
 18.
I have a burgundy mist stack knob sounds fantastic. Bit dark, I might have been tempted with a fiesta red or LPB if I could choose again.
I prefer it to the more 'washed out' look - it's class.
 19. I think I'd be too anxious about mileage giving up the ghost and at first be disappointed...
 20.
I don't think you could go wrong with both those three
Any of those colours are good - particularly the one you like.
 21.
Discreet, that's a nice demo you did - and I love the look of it, especially the headstock. The only thing saving me from my GAS are the comments about the weight and size... any idea if there's some variation in weight/size of these things? Something around 8-9lbs and Fendery length would send me straight to Thomann without a second thought!
Thanks, it's had nearly 250 downloads - I wish I'd spent a bit more time on it now! My Alder 4-string V7 is somewhere between 9.50 and 9.75lbs using the bathroom scales method, which isn't too accurate as we know. So it may still be too heavy for you. However, it balances well on its strap (a comfy and fairly wide Mono) and doesn't seem overly bloated in use. I'm assuming the Ash models are lighter? The weight may have something to do with the sustain available, but I'm not entirely convinced. The fretboard isn't any longer than a Fender, so no increased reach issues - I think the extra length is in the headstock. A Fender J is 116cm in length and the Sire is 118cm. So not a huge difference. It still fits in my hard case and gig bag. Edit: My Squier Jazz headstock is 23cm in length and the Sire headstock is 25cm in length, so there you have it.
 22.
...she's now giving it 50% approval...still ambiguous territory, but I'm working my best psychological theory on her
As it's Easter, I trust you've bought her a shedload of chocolate..? That can only improve matters.
 23.
'Thanks' to my erstwhile keeper, discreet, for being so discreet over my faux pas. Cheers; I'll do the same for you if the occasion presents itself. )
Sorry Dad - on reflection I should probably have dropped you a PM instead.
