1. Olympic white, maple, black pick guard. What's not to like??
 2.
This band is by no means young so I'm surprised it's only one member of the band, the OP, that saw red flags immediately.
I blame the government/economy/schools/parents (delete where applicable). It's now the case that most young people can't afford to leave home and often live with their parents, so we're seeing a generation of young adults who essentially remain children as there's no opportunity for them to gain true independence. Thus the usual lessons about working for a living and taking responsibility for one's own actions take longer to learn... ...I'm not suggesting the OP or his band are necessarily in this category, I just wanted to throw it out there!!
 3.
Yes but remember only up to a total of 50 euro per customer once you have had that then that's it. Best resign up again under different email lol
Oh balls - well I've had my little lot ages go, then. Still, no need to write a bloody novel every time now.
 4.
Anyone tried them ? What's the tension and tone like on them ? I want something quite flexible and reasonably bright. I'm using Status flats at the moment.
Are these the ones that are made by La Bella..?
 5. I did a review recently too and I haven't heard anything yet. I can't remember the procedure, do they email you with the voucher or what?
 6. It's perfect!
 7.
hmm i'm in the market soon for a 5 and this might be a cheepish way of seeing how i get on rather than splashing out a grand on a bass i may not get on with and from the sound clip it does sound lovely, i generally prefer satin necks or oiled are the gloss ones really ok?
I don't get on with gloss necks but this one is fine for some reason, I don't know why. Just my opinion, of course. You can always take the shine off with a Scotchbrite pad if you don't like it. It's not drastic or irreversible either, you can get the finish back easily.
 8.
...ash v alder... is ash (on average) lighter?
Apparently Hard Ash is heavier than Swamp Ash which is (generally) lighter than Alder. But there's a whole thing about differences in weight and quality of ash depending on which part of the tree it's cut from... and another whole thing about the differences in tone... Leo used Ash for sunburst finishes (as the grain shows through) and alder for solid finishes (as it doesn't). I don't think he had any strong views about any perceived tonal differences - it had a lot to do with what was locally available. So in short - I don't know!
 9.
...the bound maple fingerboard has flawless pearl block inlays and all in a high gloss. I don’t normally like high gloss necks but this one feels good -- let’s see if I change my mind after a few sweaty gigs!
I think it'll be fine. I usually get the Scotchbrite out, but it's a class finish. Feels more like a paint finish, not sticky at all.
...The D’Addario steels are nice, although I'm more of a nickel man so I think I'll be investing in some Roto nickels before too long.
Just to be irritating, mine was fitted with nickels, too. But I immediately swapped them out for BT nickels which are easier to play, imho.
And the sound. Oh my word. The sound. It is fabulous.
Absolutely the bottom line, and what all the fuss is about. That and the top-quality neck makes it unbeatable.
Fender/Squier, sit up and take notice –- there's a new kid in the playground, and he's just stolen all your dinner money.
I'm glad you agree - great post.
 10.
Pics and thoughts later when I manage to actually put it down...
Thoughts..? Have you put it down yet..?
 11.
Flute is my first instrument and so head nodding was never really an option!
Arse shaking..? Apparently James Galway does it all the time.
 12.
I have tinnitus... It's a sound that you can hear but doesn't actually exist.
The current mrs discreet has the opposite - I actually exist, but apparently she can't hear me.
 13.
Im a huge tapper
We know
 14.
I have noticed that I seem to walk a step back and then forward again quite regularly...no clue why though.
I do this, it's good for the Chalfonts - helps to ease 'em back up a bit. They can distracting at times.
 15. Not really. We don't do foot-tapping music. A bit of head-nodding, perhaps.
 16.
That's a damned good price! If the seller wasn't going through BD (and paying all that commision!) imagine what it might cost!
If I hadn't just bought my Sire Jazz I'd be sorely tempted. But I believe the Sire to be even better value. However, if you really must have 'Fender' and 'Jazz' on your traditionally-shaped headstock, I'd say go for it.
 17.
That's a situation that's all too familiar to me, and was a major factor in why I left one of my bands last year!
Tricky one really, as it's good to be positive and confident and all that, but it has to be tempered with realism. There's a very thin line between being determined and being deluded. It's the old thing about doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result (a sign of madness)...
 18. Fender American Special Jazz at Bass Direct - £550 Quick heads up for USA Fender Jazz fans... http://www.bassdirec...merican_OW.html Seems like a good deal to me.
 19.
Do you think they have to go and tell him he missed something ;-)
He obviously prefers through-bridge stringing.
 20. I sent an email to Sire about the through-bridge stringing issue with the 4-string bridge and got this reply: 'The holes for through-body stringing on the four-string bridge are quite close to the saddles as you stated. We are now adjusting the through-body holes to be further away from the saddles as they are on the 5-string bass.' Good to know Sire are open to feedback and suggestions.
 21.
Just ordered this very bass....... damn you!
Gary, you DO realise it's not a Spector, don't you??
 22. Sorry to be boring, but I'd go for a 4-string Lakland as well. Specifically a 44-60 in trans white, tort, rosewood. Or a white DJ4...
 23.
Because of your evil and bad bad advice..I've just pulled the trigger on my very first jazz bass (after 40 years of playing)... Mr Discreet didn't help at all with that review of his bass. I've just gone and bought an identical one to his from the German company...
Glad to be of service, and happy birthday! Seriously, I'm sure you will get on with the bass. Enjoy.
 24.
I'm selling it and as of Friday it may be gone
Ah, that's a shame. I can just imagine what that rig sounds like.
