Using an all valve guitar head for bass?
discreet replied to Jenny_Innie's topic in General Discussion
I recorded bass with a 50watt Laney valve head. Sounded like thunder! I doubt whether it would cut it live in a decent sized venue, mind.
Well I don't know... I had a 100W all-valve and I could never get the master above 9 o'clock - this in a rock band with the usual racket-makers. -
This post makes me think I'll enjoy the results if I don't make a hash of it!
If you do, just enjoy the hash.
Just like your fretted bass then ?
Thhhppp!! No... that sounds like a wombat farting into a saucepan - up a tree!

Short answer, yes. Downside is carrying it. Make sure your cabs are connected before you switch it on. -
I believe it's possible to get used to both. It's not a problem I'm likely to encounter, as my fretless playing sounds like the noise a lone goose makes when it's lost in thick fog.

I'm currently using a Zoom B1on... amp sims, compressors, noise gate and lots and lots of effects which can be combined, edited and stored in patches you can change on the fly... and it's cheap enough to buy, try, and move on if you don't like it. Lots of bang for your buck. I use mine as a preamp. http://www.zoom.co.jp/products/b1on
My apologies to you Mark - I'll write to your bank manager!!
Thanks! But I'd be happy if I could just find out who he actually is, because someone at my bank keeps stopping me from buying stuff!
I used to make sure that my Markbass filters were off as they all zapped the tone IMHO - whereas this vintage option actually increases power and presence.
Again, this is what I want to hear! Also the size, weight and cost are very favourable... and it looks cool, too... dammit!
I think it's the vintage switch which is the big winner here. As soon as it's engaged, the tone goes from normal tone to wow! It's supposed to emulate an old vintage valve amp, and the difference is huge - I've left mine in permanently - gives it the edge over any other solid state combo I've tried before...The presence it gives just fills the room.
From what you're saying I'm guessing this is not any kind of mid-scoop control? I'm thinking of the VPF on Markbass gear. Also the VLE control, which emulates a 'vintage' sound by basically cutting the top end somewhat... how do you think the Rumble vintage works?
It was a loud gig, but I cut through with bags of presence. Volume only on a quarter. I can't see myself needing a cab with this, it's huge, unbelievably so.
Well that's what we want to hear. So presumably there's plenty of headroom and it doesn't run out of steam... Pretty good if its running at 350W without an extension cab.

Bassist Wanted Ad on JMB - shows the mentality of some people
It wouldn't be of interest to me but there was a guy on here recently asking how soon is too soon to join a band. This would probably be worth a go for him.
I don't know for sure, but I got the impression that guy is reasonably advanced in years and that the posters of the bass player ad are not. I could be wrong of course, as I simply can't be bothered to fact-check it at this time of night. I've turned up to 'auditions' where owing to lack of communication on both sides, the 'band' were young enough to be my grandchildren (see how I turned that round, folks?) which can be good for a laugh, but is generally to be avoided. Not being ageist or anything you understand, it's just that I cannot tolerate the conversation of children for very long, as inevitably I either become catatonic or infuriated - with hilarious results. -
Now thats sweet.. Those big '88s look very Shuguang to me which is no bad thing! Lovely!
They are lovely. I believe I read somewhere that Mesa tubes are rebranded Sovteks. Or I could have just dreamt it, who knows? -
I mean note wise What note on the bass, and how it works with and against the harmony of the song.
Well again, I'd say quite a few? Isn't it reasonable to expect that the majority of bass players worthy of the name will have a fairly good grasp of note selection and at the very least a rudimentary idea of how harmony works? That's the big attraction of electric bass for me. Unless the entire membership is united only in its appreciation of the genre. If that's true, then I've really missed something, big time! -
How many members on here actually know what they're playing?
Errmm... quite a few, I'm guessing? Unless I've misunderstood the whole purpose of the forum and it's not really for bass players? Maybe it's actually for guitarists who just pick up the bass occasionally - for a laugh. -
My main bass and amp is a Variax and an Ashdown, not so sensible now eh?
Wow, indeed not! You're dicing with death there! Your Ashdown is a fire hazard! -
The fact remains that bass is probably the easiest instrument to get to gig level on imo.
Wait, is this a fact or your opinion? I'm confused! -
Can I come back in now?
Well... I dunno. You're going to have to stop being quite so reasonable and sensible... -
They do a rather tasty 112 cab now too as it happens.
Ah-ha, thanks for that! The V3 version is 19" wide, so exactly matches the width of the 500 combo. That's me, then!

WTF? This forum used to have hardly any reasonable, forward-thinking, compassionate and caring members on it. I remember when the mob could gang up and relentlessly bully someone with impunity and no-one would bat an eyelid! What the hell has happened? The place is rapidly going downhill! -
But £55 is still not enough for him. What does he want, the moon on a stick?
I offered him three million pounds but it was declined.
