A re-fin is not a relic tho
No - as planer and BigRedX pointed out above, it's an 'un-relic'.

Yes, they're only wood and wire but I've moved on three basses and regret selling them all. Will I ever learn? Eventually.
If only they did fretboard binding too.
http://youtu.be/7vLlS_QRHkU
I've already done it once.
So have I - my Hayman 4040. But as it had already been refinned very badly I felt it would be OK.
OK, pink would be flamboyant, but not in a good rock star way...
Faded Fiesta Red is manly, though - that's not pink. And as for Shell Pink, well... just about acceptable if it's a pre-CBS Fender.

50% Feedback isn't exactly encouraging, either...

Should I go to Mansons guitar emporium today?
They wouldn't let me join... something to do with not being a mum, bloody sexism.
Ask on Dadsnet - there won't be any self-pitying rants or threats of suicide, honest. -
Who on this forum would vote no??
Quite. He should have posted the question on Mumsnet instead. -
Apart from the 'issues' do you think it's worth the asking price?
Oh yes! I remember that one! What a gas! Laugh? I thought my pants would never dry!
Mine went away for a weekend. Straight away I lost my phone and couldn't find it. She returned and immediately found it in my pants and socks drawer, which was very embarrassing as it was obvious that I hadn't bothered to have a shower or change my pants and socks all weekend. Tchoh! Women, eh?
...she does lots of crafty-type stuff.
Like hiding her iPhone in your coat pocket then accusing you of stealing it. Tchoh! Women, eh?

I want a cup of tea. -
Stickers are perfectly OK, but spend a bit of time on preparation and application...

Ah, Fenda Squies! I used to go out with her mum back in the day. Ay caramba!

Welcome to the Windy City Citizen...
I'd happily gig a neon pink bass with an airbrushed pic of One Direction on it if the main criteria were met.
Well that's where we differ, because I would not!
-
Dunno about you, but I find a lot of stuff online isn't actually correct or misses a lot of the nuances. If you want a job doing properly...
Yes.
The form of music you are talking about is dying anyway.
What form of music are we talking about anyway?
...I see absolutely no reason for aping another drummer's style, note for note.
It can be done, but most drummers I've worked with in covers bands wouldn't do it or were not able to do it. As far as covers go, drums are the most difficult to get right from the point of view of how they sound, particularly with an acoustic kit. To be honest, I'm usually more than happy enough if the drummer can actually play in time and hits the kick drum more than once per bar.
Thats fine if your project goal is to creatively cover a song in a different way (for example I love war paints Ashes to Ashes) , but sometimes I think people say this to excuse the effort to learn a part.
Spot on. My view is - if you think you can do better than the original artist, then you should be writing and recording your own hits.
Well, yes and no. We're being paid to give people a good time, not play precisely what they can hear on a CD. We're a 4 piece covers band with one guitar and no keys. Playing precicely whats on the record would kinda limit the set list. It definitely doesn't mean I cant be arsed to learn it properly.
Well there's not much you can do about that. Let me rephrase: Playing covers is about replicating the original as closely as possible given your band's line-up and available instrumentation, but this is no excuse for not learning it properly. Having said that, a decent keys player can go a long way with brass and strings and so forth, but try finding a decent keys player, I know, I know.
The guys I play in my main band with all come knowing exactly where all the parts are in the song, its part of the rule, rehearsals are run-throughs, not for learning chords and structures. I would not want to be a part of a covers band that did not have this approach.
Me neither, and I have walked more than once because people turn up to rehearsal without having learnt their stuff. This makes we want to punch them repeatedly. Rehearsals are not for learning material, that should already have been done. They are for fine-tuning and tweaking, and for talking about the singer behind his back.
...playing in a 'covers' band does not imply having to regurgitate that which even the original players did not do.
But it is the recording that became the hit that is the important version, the one that the original players did do! It matters not how the original band play their hit subsequently; it's the hit that everyone is expecting to hear and that's what people expect you to play. IMHO, of course.
...For me, it takes longer to commit the structure to memory than the playing of the parts, most pop songs dont take that long at all to learn the lines, but Id have to hear it over and over to really commit the structure down...
That's the other thing that puts me off covers bands. Not only do people not listen, they won't bloody count either! Why not?? Not having a go at you, by the way - this is a general moan!
...If players remain focussed on the material played by most covers bands, musical development is unlilkely to be a crushing priority anyway.
Wilde: I wish I'd said that. Whistler: You will Oscar, you will.
