Amsterdam - best place to get a bass out there
discreet replied to silky13's topic in General Discussion
Amsterdam is probably my favourite city in the world.
And mine.
It's just a shame so many people can't think beyond the red lights and coffee houses.
Quite. There are also some great museums and art galleries, apparently. -
I've come across more string snobbery- no one has insisted I play X brand, but some have insisted I don't turn up with more than four strings.
Yes, what IS that? The thinking seems to be that if you have a 5-string bass you're somehow going to play too many notes and what's worse, probably not shut up, stand at the back and play roots and fifths like I want you to so that my great guitar skilz can come to the fore, thanks very much please.
Makes me sad in an utterly selfish way, as I am of a similar age and he was there in the NME etc that I used to read avidly as a teen. I said it was a selfish viewpoint but thats how I feel
I feel exactly the same Clarky if it's any consolation.
I just went to YouTube to find out about that one.
So then I had to as well... God it's a bland song, is it not??

Squire Vintage Modified, Just bought - Can't believe how good it is.
I suspect crap strings?
They could be, but any strings that aren't 'mine' seem crap, so maybe that's it... makes a huge difference to your first impression, though. -

Update on my Sqiuer Jazz Deluxe IV... I bought it as a no-worry gigging bass, but in a very short time it seems to be my go-to bass... I spent some time choosing strings, tweaking the truss rod, fitting a Hipshot Xtender, tort guard and 'Scotchbriting' the neck to get it just how I wanted it - and now I'd be miffed if anything happened to it, thus defeating the object of buying it in the first place! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/255078-nbd-squier-deluxe-jazz-iv-active/ I'll get a sound file up so you can check it out. -

Very, very nice indeed. That's the best Limelight Jazz I've seen since... 'my' 60s blonde stack-knob relic (now owned by three)!! Well done, it looks a real peach and I bet it plays like one too.
-
...those awful "almost sounds like the original artist" compilation albums you used to get in Woolworth's
I remember those, so depressing! Nothing worse than hearing some faceless session band kill a number you didn't want to hear by the original artist in the first place!
-
Holy crap, I'd forgotten about some of these horrors! Every morning I get down on my knees and thank God I'm not in a cover band. At the moment.

Bergantino NV412. If you can find one.
Pre-amp valves are fine on their sides but the power valves seem to need to be vertically oriented otherwise the electrons get confused. IIRC the AC30 had them upside down
What about a small valve combo where the power valves hang down into the speaker enclosure? Oh, wait...
Do they have to stand upright?
No. In the G-K MB500 Fusion they're on their sides. As they are in the Ampeg SVP 1U preamp.

Doesn't the Prodigy go somewhat in that direction? http://www.mesaboogie.com/amplifiers/bass/prodigy--strategy-tube-bass-amp-series/bass-prodigy-four-88/index.html 29lb isn't exactly lightweight, but it's a hell of a lot better than 29kg!

Today received some strings from Iain. All good, fast delivery, great comms. Thank you!
Which brand are your socks? How allied to them are you? Do they own you?
Actually, I've disowned them.

Beck is very cool. Other people are not. That is all.
...why pay £500 for a brand new one when you could pay £600 for a broken, second-hand one?
Well the brand new one has a bridge, so obviously there's no challenge there. Too easy! You want the moon on a stick you do, Jack!
-
What I like to listen to and what I like to play are generally two different animals. I only listen to what I play in order to learn how to play it, or to come up with ideas for it or to rehearse with it.
I should have put the order in for my P ages ago, but I just can't make my mind up on the colour!
Let me help you... aged oly white with tort guard and rosewood slab board, rolled edges. Appropriately aged ashtrays can only help enhance the pics!
-
Nicely done! We'll need to see pics, of course.
-
Close enough. The bridge just gets in the way, really.

The latest additions to my huge collection of obbm products are: one Speakon to Jack 1m cable and one Straight to Angled 5m instrument cable... what can I say that hasn't already been said? I've had many cables from Dave over the years. They don't get a particularly easy life frankly, and so far the failure rate is: Zero. Great product, top components and materials, professional assembly, superlative value and next-day tracked and signed-for delivery. Unsurpassed and I suspect, unsurpassable. Thanks again, Dave!
it was..but 90% of it was sh*te..IIRC
Possibly, but the remaining 10% was brilliant and wouldn't have happened any other way...
