  1. Before I very stupidly sold my Road Worn P, I did notice that it was physically lighter than most other Ps I've had, and played acoustically was very loud. In fact, if you held it forward there was an astonishing amount of sound coming out of the back of it! This is a 'real' phenomena I'm sure, but whether or not that translates into any difference whatsoever at the pickup..? I'm still sceptical.
  2. I just don't see how type of body wood or finish can possibly affect your signal at the output jack. The difference in sound between a Ray and a P Bass (for example) is largely in the design and position of the pickup and how the electrics are configured. This being my opinion based on 40 years of listening - I'm no audio scientist and I could be wrong. Not saying you didn't perceive a difference in your own mind after all that work, but Confirmation Bias can be extremely powerful!
  3. Didn't know about that one, thanks. I note these stacked or dual coil pups are sold mainly as a solution to 60Hz hum, not much is made of the fact that you can more or less replicate a 57 type split pickup, which to me is more important.
  4. I've had this, too. Bands 101: Play for THE SONG.
  5. UK Customs charges! Got hit for a bridge I imported from the USA! Rip-off! At least Dîck Turpin wore a mask!!

:( Here in Finland there are no import duties to pay for items that are imported from outside of the EU if,  The total value including postage come to some under something like €50.

Or at least that was the case the last time I  imported anything from the USA, far too complicated to try and save money on items and will only do it if it's a specialised item I can't get from anywhere else.

Having done the sums, even with custom charges the bridge still works out cheaper importing from the US than buying it in the UK! Which just goes to show what a rip-off everything is here!

See? Even though I actually got a fair result, I'm still moaning about it! :D

In the UK it's if goods + posting > £18 (or thereabouts).

The courier normally adds an "admin fee", of £10-20.

  6. Maybe they've already been bought - by ghosts! Woooo!
  7. Hmm... a Behringer bass rig that's been used and abused by practically every bass player in town since the late 70s... I bid 99p!
  8. Nothing wrong with Behringer gear! I was more worried about being electrocuted because of the extensive damp...
  9. So didn't survive, then. Sad news.
  10. You really need to apply the decal to a sealed, lacquered surface. Applying it to stained wood will invite tits-uppery. What you use to seal it depends on what has already been used to lacquer the headstock. If it's poly, seal it with poly, if nitro, nitro, etc. I'd give the decal a couple of very light coats of lacquer before you apply it, this helps to conceal the edges. Have a look on Google/YouTube, there is a multitude of info.
  11. Maybe, but it's better than spending it on things you need, isn't it?
  12. Ha! I knew it! I'll do you a great deal if you want the bridge as well...
  13. Don't know, it hasnt arrived yet! I have the new pickup on order along with a toggle switch and a Fender Deluxe 4 saddle bridge (the one with part-threaded saddles). It's a 3-screw mounting and has through/top stringing options so should be a drop-in. I like the look of the current 2-saddle bridge but in practise it's a pain in the bum regarding action and intonation adjustment. Going for practicality over 'authenticity'. I have a new graphtec Tusq nut which should also improve the overall playing experience... Edit: So I'll have a Herrick neo 51 Tele pup and a SQ VM two saddle through body bridge up for sale soon...
  14. Dual-Coil 51 Precision Pickup Ordered one of these from Jess Loureiro. I really like the big bottom end and full-range, fast-attack sound you get from a good 51-style P pickup, but there are times when I'd prefer the enhanced low-mid push and high-mid snap you get from the 57-type split P pickup. I don't want to carry two basses, so I'm hoping the new pickup will give me those enhanced mids, BUT with the fast attack you get from having one pole piece per string. Suh-weet! My plan is to install a toggle switch on the control plate so I can switch between series and parallel, i.e. 57-type and 51-type sounds. Has anyone done this, and what was the outcome..?
  15. Is a 'closet head' someone who likes to conceal their sexual proclivities? I'm sorry, but it had to be said. Anyway, another vote here for the Rumble. My V3 Combo makes a nice warm thumpy, punchy noise and I'm assuming the V3 head does, too.
  16. I feel quite strongly about a lot of things, but it doesn't necessarily get me anywhere.
  17. It's your bass, you put it together exactly how you wanted it and you're going to be playing it! So it matters not what I think!
