  1. Good tip. But even indoors it's a good idea to tidy up and push the Hoover around a bit. It's still possible to blow dust and dirt indoors with a spray gun or can. The actual spraying of paint is the easy bit. Preparation is important, as is the environment in which the paint will dry.
  2. Never let anyone dictate which bass or amp you should be using - they have NO idea.

@Chownybass,  You were a bit slow.

Discreet might have been slightly more open to your suggestion had I not already tried to sell him one of my own creations.

I used to work with a sound-guy who regularly tweeked the settings on my bass amp. I know for a fact he tried it with other bass colleagues......

...they still haven't found the body

  3. Ha! Quite. And then tell us he doesn't live with his mum and has a full-time job. Obvious fantasist...
  4. I know, I can hear it from here.
  5. My Paulownia Jazz had slight neck dive with standard tuners so I fitted Hipshot Ultralites, which saved half a pound at the headstock. No neck dive, and the bass weighs a smidgen over 7lb. It feels light as a feather. My P Bass is 9.5lb and feels like a boat anchor. Any weight that can be saved makes a huge difference.
  6. There's all that stuff about subconsciously liking your mum's boobs, as well. I think it's a load of rubbish, personally - my mum's tits are tiny.
  7. It's a faff because Paulownia is so grainy and porous. Personally I think it's worth it, because the advantages outweigh the disadvantages - it's likely to be the lightest P Bass you've ever played. If weight isn't an issue for you though, then not so much.
  8. Thanks! Most apt, as I'm just off for a big dump.
  9. That's what I thought. Trouble is, fantasists and flakes don't know that they're fantasists and flakes (or if they do, they won't admit it), so such an ad will likely put everyone off.

Sold Dave a bridge. Very quick payment as usual and no issues, as usual. He let me know when it arrived, too. All good and highly recommended.
  11. Yes, of course they are. You have a nice sit down... I just have to make a quick phone call...
  12. Of course, that's different - guitarists have always been a lot more deluded than bass players. Anyway, I've got a brand new car and it's made me a really good driver, so there!
  13. Yes, I meant 'one's head'. It's true though, it's not the bass, it's what you do with it. No matter how many basses I play, at the end of the day me playing a bass sounds a lot like me playing a bass - regardless of what it is, or how much it cost.
  14. Yes. No matter how desirable a bass seems or how expensive it is, it never comes complete with great technique, feel, groove and tasteful note choices. Bottom line is, it's always you, a plank of wood and some wires. That is all. The rest is entirely in your head.
  15. Herring pickup? That sounds a bit fishy. For my next PB I was thinking about a dual-coil pickup switchable between series and parallel. Then you could have the 51 single coil tone and the 57 humbucker tone... would that work?
  16. Not seen one like that, but if it works OK (and why shouldnt it?) then happy days.
  17. I think I got it from Amazon. It wasn't expensive, definitely less than a tenner.
  18. I'm not a carpenter and use a drill guide like this one.
  19. Not my question I know, but just jumping in here rather rudely - I did mine by lining up the two-saddle bridge (the centre hole of which lined up with the centre hole of the previous bridge), then using that as a guide to drill through the body from the top. Then I drilled the larger ferrule holes from the bottom, using the existing holes as pilots - with a bit of tape on the bit as a depth gauge. Then I countersunk the holes to make the ferrules flush.
  20. Ooh, you're going to Hell for sure!!
  21. I've done this three times now - with the help of your kindly-supplied templates - and it's a lot of fun, shot through with lumps of anxiety and a few qualms. Nice result, though - my OCD just won't allow a 51-style P body not to have a 51-style P headstock!!
  22. They could have gone tits-up at any time, then. I've experienced this before and these days the first thing I do when I get a new (or used) bass is to put new strings on it. Then you can be sure you're using your preferred strings - the strings that came with the bass are probably unidentifiable - and you have no idea what state they're in or how old they are. It's good to eliminate these variables, particularly as strings are one of the more affordable ways to radically improve the sound and playability of your bass. If you use flats, just buy some La Bellas and you'll never have to change strings again.
