I think anything heavier than around 20kg would seriously hamper an effective flounce. But if you were using the house rig and a cheap bass it would be great to smash it on the floor, Who-style, before storming out. The bastards wouldn't forget that in a hurry.
There's something about drummers - you can't tell 'em owt - particularly if it's tempo- or timing-related. Why do they like to think they're metronomes when they clearly aren't? And why are they so touchy about it when you criticise them out of the blue in front of the rest of the band??
At least it can show that you're actually good enough to play with high-level pros. And also shows you what your band could be like if the drummer was any good...
Plenty of exceptions! I can play a P as fast as I can play a J, but the point is I don't particularly want to play either fast. However, a J makes it easier to play fast. And I'm far less likely to make tasteful note choices when it's easy just to play all of 'em!
That's a good affordable option - buy an HB P and an HB J, swap necks and sell on the P bodied J neck... there's always a market for a P with a J neck...
I think that's going to be my next project.
I love my bitsa Jazz, but... as usual, the neck is just too flimsy and 38mm is just too narrow! I always feel I could snap a J neck if I dug in a bit too deep...
This. I've become more used to 38mm and can play them, but still prefer P-width nuts, particuarly 1.75" with a 7.25" radius board. You can certainly tell if you're playing one of those or not, with or without a blindfold.
Been swapping between a Jazz and a P recently and once more - as is always the case - prefer the P Bass. I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that a Jazz doesn't sound like a P - not necessarily because of the pickups and/or their placement and/or whether they're single-coil or not - but because in general P necks simply have more wood in 'em! A chunky wood neck makes for a chunky wood sound... [Insert 'wood in the hand' joke here]
If you mean Allparts, their necks are right up there with the best in quality and 'tone' - they are at least as good (If not better than) stock Fender necks.
The Allparts neck fitted to my Bass Doc custom P is as good as anything produced by the big F.
Entirely down to personal preference. I enjoyed my dalliance with 5 strings but I prefer to keep things simple. I didn't like swapping between 5 and 4 and didn't want to give up my 4s. For me those extra few notes and positional possibilities weren't worth the extra weight, expense and weird string spacing. Also, I couldn't shake the feeling that the 'B' string was just too... different from the other strings, somehow... it didn't sit right with me. YMMV of course.
IME every song has a 'sweet spot' tempo. If songs are played at the 'right' tempo (generally meaning the feel and groove are 'right' and everyone's comfortable with it), then it will sound good. This is usually the tempo at which the song has been rehearsed, or very close to it. Playing songs at the right tempo live is what separates good bands from not-so-good bands. Chuck Berry could get away with changing tempi on the fly. Everyone else, not so much.

This sound clip features a Herrick Tele '51' Alnico pickup fitted to a modded HB PB-50:
Now SOLD. I thank you!
It sure is. A while back I put forward the notion that a string with a higher action sounds better than one with a low action (regardless of pickup height) and was roundly castigated by dullards. I still think it's true, however. Thpppppp!
Ahem... Hipshot KickAss. I know it's not one of the three in the OP, but having fitted one to my Jazz I recommend it. High mass, lateral adjustment, straight swap on a Fender (four string), easy availability, great price and looks good!
Astonished at the thickness of plectra people seem ro be using! I can't be doing with anything thicker than .50...
Horses for courses, YMMV, imho, etc...
With reference to recent traffic accidents due to weather: Does anyone else wonder why people will even drive in these conditions in the first place, then drive as if conditions are warm and dry with good visibility? Are they fecking thick, or deluded, or what?
