Smoking, drinking, eating, watching TV etc.while on stage?
discreet replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
No don't do that - you risk entering a 'Futility Loop'. I recommend a good cry in the cupboard under the stairs when everyone else has gone to bed. -
+1 The overall volume of a band is surely down to how loud the drummer is. My current band has a great drummer who can play very quietly and it's a blessed relief, to be honest. I don't care what happens, I'm sticking with this guy! A quiet-playing band also makes it much easier to rehearse, compose and get a good overall sound in general. Makes a huge difference when you're not pushing earplugs in, dealing with nosebleeds and gritting your teeth. A very loud band is just unnecessary, unprofessional and is also very tiring, both for players and listeners. *Awaits backlash from those who must be loud 'to get my sound' and so on... yawn.*

Heh. Well, I certainly didn't mean to depress the crap out of everyone. Don't look back, folks! Onwards and upwards! Excelsior! -
Ah yes, the Basschat Jazz conundrum... know it well..! Actually 'Conundrum' is a great name for a jazz-fusion combo. And so is 'Prolapse'. Ahem. Well, I must get on...

That's so true. There was no 'Health and Safety'. Only 'Health and Efficiency'. With my peers, we learned a lot about human behaviour and acquired important practical skills by deliberately putting ourselves in danger on a regular basis. Which in retrospect was a good thing and something I'd definitely recommend - for other people's kids. However, my blood runs cold when I think of my own son being in some of those situations. Normal parental anxiety (just like my own parents had) I suppose... -

Only one disastrous marriage here, but plenty of disastrous relationships, so I can sympathise. When I was fourteen I'd already decided I wanted to be a professional bass player/producer/musician - and that happened, sporadically and with varying degrees of success, over the following forty years or so - despite my doing everything I could to wreck my own chances. Booze and drugs makes being your own worst enemy a lot, lot easier. See my upcoming new book, Coping with Disappointment. -

It's the waste of time that hurts most. And what's more, you knew it. But as usual when negative thoughts arose, it was time for another drink. When I finally gave up it wasn't the physical addiction I found hard to deal with - that's just a habit like any other - it was the forty years' worth of questionable behaviour and terrible choices that came flying out of the booze-locked box where I'd been keeping them, into the cold light of day. So now it's a case of not wasting what time I have left and avoid things like... spending too long online, for example... D'OH!! -

This would have been laughed at in the 70s. Everyone left the building for an hour for lunch. Quite normal when unions were strong. We have lost much and today's workers don't even know it. Current propaganda tells us the 70s were a socialist nightmare, but they most certainly were not. Proper pay and working conditions - now gone. -
That will get you a very nice-sounding bass for the price of the pickup and strings.

Its not difficult and by doing the work you can turn a reasonable budget bass into a really good-sounding player for not much cash. You don't need to replace the hardware and electrics and obviously refinishing is optional. Investing in premium strings and spending time on a careful setup is what really makes the difference with this bass.

Good tip. I like to sand though, prior to applying Amber tint nitro.

Agreed. I could also have done with giving up booze about thirty years before I finally did. -
Phil kindly donated a 2x10 cab. Great guy, swift transaction and the price was right!! Recommended.

It's fairly easy if you're thorough. I'm sure Mr K Blair will help you with a template if he hasn't already. The HB logo sands off easily. I use a junior hacksaw to get a rough shape then spend a bit of time with various grades of sandpaper getting thd final shape by hand.

You may be there without knowing it. It's possible that what you're hearing when you play isn't the actual sound being produced. Just as people don't recognise their own voices when they hear a recording of themselves. I'd say forget it, use a P, concentrate on your playing and it will all fall into place. The more you chase it the further away it will get. Ignore it and lo, there it is. Because it was there all along. Look at it this way - how can you be the only person in the world who can make a P sound different? The tone is baked-in to the design, that's why it works.
-
Maybe try La Bellas on your existing bass first, as that's the easiest option? Could well get you close enough.
-
Phil bought an OBBM speaker cable in what proved to be a very smooth transaction. Recommended!

Another reason I like P basses... as said above, they are very simple but instantly give you 'that' sound in a mix. So you can forget all about the 'tonequest', forget about GAS and get on with the business of actually playing the bloody thing. Which is why I don't much care for on-board preamps, active basses* and over-complicated amps - too much of a distraction. *Spectors excepted, obvs.
-
Check out the compressors, pre amps and amp sims. I hardly ever used mine for actual FX.

What are the specs for the extension cab just out of interest? Is it another 10" driver? What size is the box? -
Fender seem to make 3 vintage P bass pickups with Alnico 5s -so...

If it is a great little thing that sounds great and has served you well, the knowledge that it has a 4ohm driver presumably won't change that. Send the extension cab back for a refund and continue to enjoy your combo, is my advice. IMHO, YMMV, and so on. -

There is nothing wrong with stock Squier pickups. Whether playing live or recording you'd be very hard-pressed to tell the difference. There is no magic pixie dust that is sprinkled over expensive replacement pickups to make them sound appreciably better. IMHO what makes a pickup sound good is its original design, and factors such as neo, alnico or ceramic magnets, or mystic wire and cable made from unobtainium etc, are just red herrings. And marketing! *Puff, pant!* And breathe..! Sorry about that, just needed a little vent. -
These are really great units. I get the impression people think they're inferior in some way, because they are cheap. Not so - I used mine as an 'always-on' preamp and it was astounding. Everyone should have one in their gig bag. Along with a Behringer BDI-21.

Keith bought a set of Schallers. Fast payment, great comms, smooth transaction - and of course, no problems. Recommended!
