Looking really good. Can't wait to see the finished bass. Get on with It!
-
Doubt it very much. I have a couple of 50s guards from Fender-shaped basses and they don't fit a PB-50. I just paint the stock guard.

Just recorded a quick noodle...sounds a lot like a P Bass! And loving the neo pickup, it has a little growl when pushed! I like the Fender flats too, but I can't help but think I'd prefer La Bellas. Only one way to find out, I suppose... Listen loud with headphones, decent monitors, yadda yadda.

It does look very businesslike, you have to admit... -
Nice! I considered 50s-type ashtrays. They look good, but I didn't want to fit a spiffy bridge and pickup, then cover them up!

Good job, loving the blue refin. If this were Talkbass we'd probably start some sort of half-assed, geeky PB-50 modding club...

Yes you can, can't you? I couldn't have put it better myself.

No, they're not lightweight. Coming from my 7-1/2lb Jazz bitsa this PB seems like a boat anchor, but the total weight is just under 9lbs - so not ridiculous. There's no neck dive brought on by a light body, that's for sure.

It depends on how much work you want to put in. The biggest improvement you can make to a stock PB-50 is to put some decent flats on it. Makes a world of difference. But more generally, the PB-50 body is sound and the neck is incredible. The neck is worth the price of a PB-50 on its own, IMHO. But as said above, it IS quite chunky even though it's 42mm at the nut. So you have to be a P-Bass fan, really. Jazz-types probably wouldn't like it. As far as being a 'better' bass than the Squier? I'm not sure. Logically I'd buy the Squier as it would hold its value if you wanted to move it on - and no fettling required!

Bass players still poor relations in a band...?
discreet replied to jonnythenotes's topic in General Discussion
I tend to make an impression on 'you're only the bass player' types. It's usually headstock-shaped and always an accident. Oops! -
Yes, I noticed that... I'm sure we can come to some sort of arrangement.

That vomit has clearly had a bird walk through it. Last time a bird walked through MY vomit, I got nil points and had to clean it up myself. Bloody hell.

It's hardly like BF make a point of claiming to be a budget option, is it? They have never competed solely on price, only quality. Buying a BF cab always has to be thought about from a budget point of view (at least from MY budget point of view). Has anyone mentioned Brexit yet..?

Not at all. The original neck has a really nice satin feel so I left it as-is on the back. The headstock, heel and fretboard got a couple of coats of Amber Tint nitro, with the headstock getting a couple of light coats of Dark Yellow nitro, (which is actually more of a brown colour). You have to be careful, it's really easy to put too much on and make it too dark. I would actually have preferred it a little lighter overall, but couldn't be bothered to re-do it. It's OK.

You have to bite the bullet, decide it's going to happen and as Nike say, Just Do It. The Wilkinson pickup is really good and doesn't need upgrading. The newer HB PB-50s have a Roswell pickup, which doesn't sound that bad, but it doesn't look the part.

Obviously I like the look of them, but haven't owned one before - you can see why Leo moved on to a separate saddle for each string! A two-saddle makes intonation and action adjustment more difficult, but not impossible. Not really a problem compared with the effort needed to fit the bloody thing in the first place.
