Start-up bands, how long does it take to start gigging?
discreet replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
Or, given the flakiness of the fantasists involved, a 'bullplop factory'. -
*WITHDRAWN* USA Peavey TNT160 Bass Combo http://assets.peavey.com/literature/manuals/80301192.pdf These were real workhorses back in the day. This one weighs 77lbs (35kg) and runs a 150W RMS amp into a 200W RMS 15" Scorpion driver. As you can see from the pics, I have fitted large castors and side handles which go a long way to offsetting its bulk. It's in pretty good nick for a 27-year-old combo. The only negative is a slight buzz when idling (hence the price), but as soon as you turn it up to any reasonable playing level, the buzz becomes inaudible. Everything works - chorus, compressor, graphic eq, etc. I have gigged the amp, and it really chucks it out to the back of the room - but it may be put to better use in a rehearsal situation, or as a home practice amp, due to its weight. This is a genuine 'Handcrafted in the USA' example and has plenty of... (whisper it)... Heft. So if you want to live the legacy dream and own a true piece of USA bass playing history, get in! Price is £45 cash on collection from SE London close to the A205 South Circular. I'm not posting it for obvious reasons. Feedback is in my sig. Now WITHDRAWN. I thank you!

One year or even six months would be totally unacceptable to me. I did once play in a band that didn't gig for six months because I was led up the garden path 'We'll be gigging soon, we've got gigs for next week, the gig's been cancelled, the gig's been postponed;', etc. etc. They had no intention of gigging and were a rehearsal-only band. They got me to play with them under false pretences and I was not best pleased to say the least. I can't afford to waste months faffing about with idiots and liars who waste my time - we only have a short time left on this planet and I can't be doing with flakes and fantasists!* *Copyright Happy Jack, 2018. -
To be fair the revolutionary innovation happened years ago. I agree with you about the rut, but on the other hand when Fender do try something new everyone practically has a heart attack and demands they get back to their 'core values', i.e. more of the same.

Sigh.....this is what we're up against

Went on holiday to the Gambia some years ago, one night the entertainment was a band playing JuJu music - brilliant musicianship and fantastic performances all round, I loved it - they were almost totally ignored by the largely British audience. Next night, the hotel staff mimed (very badly) to a selection of hits from the 60s and 70s played over a very crappy PA system - the audience went nuts and lapped it up. -
Today's word is 'grandmotherable'. You win the internet.

Well... he IS German.

Yes, it pleases me to have a good old swear as well, but I can't. Apparently this is a family-friendly forum, but I've never seen kids on here, ever. Or dogs, babies or grandmothers. Plenty of grandfathers, though.

I say 'bum about', but it doesnt have the same impact. I hate the profanity filter now, it's dung.

I rehearsed with that shape too - solo you can hear the underlying Trace 'twang', but with the band it becomes a warm, vintage sound and the 'twang' gives it a very nice punch and presence. Using my BDI-21 set flat with Blend at 2 o'clock helps a lot with this.

Is there a bass somewhere that doesn’t “play like a dream”?

If it was that cheap it probably played more like margarine... -

Hadn't thought of that. If true, his listing is completely valid. -

If you really want a double entendre, I'll give you one... -
Where's @Happy Jack ? I think he did a floating floor in his garage, though I could be wrong. He posted a whole thread about converting a space.

You can't call someone a 'dicky' - that's worse than 'Richard'! How about this for wit? Thhhhhhhpppp!! Thhppppppp! Thhhhhhpppppp!!! -

So we can't type 'd i c k' now? I'm getting 'Richard' instead. Come on, really. What if someone's name is 'Richard' but they prefer to be called 'D i c k'? The profanity filter on this site really is set to toddler levels, it's embarrassing! -

Maybe he just isn't aware of the new price? You'd have to be a knob to sell something without researching what it's worth, though... -
Yes. It's tempting to take just a bass for reasons of convenience, but from experience I'd say take your own gear if possible. You only need to play one gig where you can't hear yourself properly to realise this. And that gig seems very long! All the way through it, you can think only one thing: 'Wish I'd brought my gear'. It doesn't make for an inspired performance to say the least.

I'm more concerned about the squelchy Moog sounds apparently coming from that electric piano that's not plugged in...

Don't worry about it. To cheer you up I can put you in touch with a Nigerian prince who has a really interesting business proposition. Don't thank me yet - let's see how it pans out. I'm very excited, though. -

I think Dad was having a little joke of his own.
